If he's willing to re-sign on the relative cheap, I'm all for it. He has not been great this season, but remains a steady dman for us.

[Suspended 1 Game] MacEwen to have hearing for kneeing Oilers' Nurse
kloubek replied to -SN-'s topic in Canucks Talk
I'd sooner focus on Nurse's intentional crosscheck to the face. That's a blatant violent act that could do a lot of damage. But that's OK. Tom Wilson ending the season of a star is OK too. No problem. But what the NHL will *absolutely not* tolerate is a clean hit where multiple body parts made contact. Unacceptable. Honestly, if they wanted to look at any Vancouver play last night it should have been Hamonic's hit to the head on the Oil player. -

This season, he has not produced well. But did you happen to forget he was on pace for over 53 points last season. That's more than acceptable. Also, many players on our team are underperforming this year. -

Agree with all this. I am just not convinced Podz has that high end ceiling, so we might have to look outside the org. We will see... hoping I'm wrong. This is where I think Toffoli really would have come in handy, but what's done is done I guess. I think between the ED, buyout options, LTIR and a few other factors including a flat cap (and lower than expected salaries), that we should be able to squeeze the room under the cap, so then it's just what assets we'd he willing to give up if nothing materializes on the UFA front. Dont suppose Landeskog wants to switch cities for 5m per? -

I think your lineup is the most likely scenario if Beags remains out - though I wouldn't be adverse as to try Motte on that 3rd line. Your lineup speaks to their grooming of Lind at C - though I gotta say, 3C is a lot of responsibility for a guy who hasn't shown us a ton at this level - yet. Could just as easily put Sutter in there if need be - though he seems perfectly suited for the 4C role instead and... let's face it - isn't exactly the key to an overwhelming offensive line. "Bit". Lol. Hogs is all over the place. He's a smart kid - he'll get it. As you know, I'm very excited to see how he will develop. -

The amount of dead weight certainly isn't ideal, and more than most other decent teams. But I maintain that regardless of the reason such contracts exists, they will be over soon and that our core is sound. As for replacement talent - I agree somewhat. We don't have the high end prospect pool we did a couple of years ago, and Benning will need to find a way to replenish it. In this regard though, I'm not too concerned due to his history of making good draft selections. I will say, however, that although there aren't any top-end names that stand out, there ARE plenty of B-level prospects, and you gotta think (hope?) at least one or two of them will hit. Finally, I don't think we require to bring in as much as you do. Even with my lineup posted in the post above to Crabcakes, I really only see the need for 1 top 6 winger to be brought in. It wouldn't hurt to have another legit top 4 defenseman as well, but there too I don't think we are (on paper. There's that term again) as bad as you think: QH: Nothing needs to be said - though I wish he would find his defensive game again Schmidt: While he hasn't been that great with us, there are many variables that might contribute to that. He's looked better, so hopefully he will look good next season. I don't think that most will deny he's a top 4 guy. Juolevi: Who knows what his ceiling is. He's impressing me more lately, but he's a wildcard imo. Could be a top 4. Could remain bottom pairing. Hamonic: (If re-signed). I think he's done ok. Not a top 4 guy anymore (if he ever was) but a solid bottom pairing guy. Edler: Isn't having a great year. Age is catching up to him. But I wouldn't be against a re-sign for 1 year at a reduced salary. Still a middle pairing guy. Rathbone: Who knows yet. I like *some* of what I see. Could well end up top 4. Myers: Paid like a top 4 and considered by some to be one, I'd say he's fringe top 4 but really a complementary player who serves a role. So that's 3 top 4 guys, 2 who could well be top 4 soon, one who is very servicable if we re-sign Hamonic, and 1 fringe top 4 guy. (By my estimations). That doesn't seem so bad? It's not the immediate gratification we would all like, but it could be a very solid group in a couple years and again, on paper, looks not really that bad as it stands. If anything, I would be searching for an ideal defensively-minded partner for Hughes. -

I added my own opinions to your own in the quote. I think we're basically on the same page. As for the 3rd line, if we could somehow land a 1st line LW (which may be a challenge) I actually see Miller taking that third line spot, then also being added to PP, etc. He likes playing center, but he would be wasted if we can't give him decent wingers to play with. Another alternative you mentioned is Sutter - who I would also be ok with keeping around on a smaller contract. I was thinking more like 2m, but who knows. There's still the question if Beagle will be fit to play next season, is there not? If not, then I propose: XXXXX Petey Boeser Pearson Horvat Hoglander Podz Miller Lind? Motte Sutter BigMac -

It isn't realistic to expect every player to be worth their contract imo. (And thereby being considered "worth something"). Players decline, get injured, or otherwise underpeform all the time. The best GMs manage to mitigate it as well as possible, but I bet you could look at any NHL roster and pick out a handful of guys most other GMs would really want given their contract price. In some cases, several. Yes, we are still overpaying for bottom six guys, thanks to Bennings off-season signings from hell which were meant to teach our young guys how to play the "right way". Yes, LE continues to be a thorn in our side. Those contracts will be gone soon. Then what do we do with the cap space? Trade for higher cap star players or sign UFAs. Now, you say you don't want to overpay for UFAs which is fair, but I think you don't need AS much overpayment to bring a good player to a budding contender as we did when we brought in those three vets. And you're like... WHAT budding contender?? Well, I think we are closer than you think. I believe that what we saw last playoffs is more indicative of what this team is. Now, of course, we relied on our goaltending too much but again, I feel that could be largely solved by better chemistry and structure. I think if we hadn't lost Petey and hadn't gone though this whole Covid BS that we would still be talking playoffs, with really the start of the season primarily to blame for it even being close. Oh, I would not move Miller. I think he's an excellent compliment to our top 6 group... despite a couple warts. His contract is quite alright too. I truly love having Boeser on the team, but he's going to be pricey. I could see a case to be made for moving him if need be, but it would leave us pretty dry on the right side. Anyway, I say stay the course. I think there is still a team here that just requires tweaking to be successful. We just gotta figure out how to play defensively. -

...and I think this is where the real question lies. What is the missing factor, and IS it the coaching? If you look at this team on paper, I think it's actually not bad at all. We have speedy, young, talented guys on the roster. And yes, there are some players that aren't living up to their contracts but I think you could say that on most teams. And yes, I've disagreed with some of Benning's moves but again, the same could be said of any GM. I think overall, he has largely done a good job assembling this team. So IF one agrees, then it comes down to 2 possible things. The players themselves, and the coaching. As far as the players go, they really are trying out there, but we see lots of mistakes. Lots of turnovers, odd-man rushes, shots against, and high danger scoring chances. I think there certainly is something to be said about the players in all that - especially when it is really glaring like it was the last couple games with Miller. The individual poor choices need to stop. But being that these issues also affect the team as a whole, I can't help but think it's the systems utilized which are failing us. And if that is true, does that fall on Green or say, Baumgartner? I'm almost inclined to think the whole coaching staff should be sacked, but it would also be a hit to our identity, which has already taken a beating by losing key players. It's a risk, but unless we can figure out why the team is underperforming, it might be required. Note: I don't know how many REALLY expected us to be a good team after Covid, and without Petey. So I'm giving the boys a pass for now, but we saw all this prior to the outbreak, of course. -
I really wish you hadn't told me that. I enjoyed living in a world where something went right for out team... albeit briefly.

[Proposal] Nolan Patrick on the move?
kloubek replied to DownUndaCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think Patrick still has time to put his game together. Technically, JV does too but it doesn't look like either will do so with their current teams. Both have been brutally bad this season. So on that level, it makes some sense. I'm thinking... - That's not much return for a 2nd OA pick... even if he hasn't worked out. - Are his headaches worked out? We don't need another Ferland-style situation. But man, if there was a way to snag him cheap after such a brutal season, and then if he clicked in our system? Worth a 2nd to me. -
What do you mean "continues"? He's been good in Chicago so far. It's unfair to judge a player too much until he's had a change of scenery at least once. If he keeps at this pace, he is easily a top 6 guy. Heck, I'd even give JV a chance to be an impact player if his issues permit. Do I think either will happen? No. But it's entirely possible. Gaudette has some skills, but needs experience imo.

Good lord... you guys are absolutely stretching all sorts of things I said with that post. And great job judging the entire 46 years that made me who I am due to one comment, btw. The sad situation, regardless of whether he is at fault or not, has already happened. I had no hand in causing it. It's done. Just because I see potential benefit to the team doesn't mean I don't feel for this woman (if she is telling the truth), nor feel for Jake (if he didn't do it). I simply stated why what I believed to be reasons why I feel there may be truth to the story, as well as my opinion on how it might position the Canucks moving forward. So, to be clear, unlike myself, you personally abandon any kind of logical thinking of different angles because it might include an event that is upsettting, disappointing, or where someone got hurt? I do not have a personal emotional attachment to the situation so I can see it from an objective perspective. I understand you're trying to make a point here, but quite frankly, you couldn't be more incorrect and your contention doesn't even make sense. Thinking "bigger picture" or "cup half full" is just a fact of living life. For most of us not stuck in some peculiar emotionally-confining box anyway. Bottom line, I'm sure you felt better about yourself getting a dig in, so, carry on, sir. Whatever floats your boat.

...and you're the 2nd one to quote me, yet conveniently forget I said he is innocent until proven guilty. For all the decent points you make, I can cite other somewhat similar cases with other athletes where different decisions were made. Honestly, I hope nothing more than for this to be false. But I'm also SO done with the drama that follows Jake. It's the same reason I never wanted Evander Kane here. Immaturity leads to bad decision making which in turn becomes a burden on the team. I can't say I expected this, however...

what grade (1 to 10) would you give Travis Green?
kloubek replied to grouse747's topic in Canucks Talk
I think Green is OK. He gets buy-in from the group, and I think the players like him. For me, it's about my not understanding why we are so bad defensively. We give the puck away astonishingly often, and we rely on our goalies to be outstanding nightly. This must not continue. BUT, how much of this is on Green? Baumer? The players themselves... and by extension, maybe Benning? Something's gotta give. -
Ok, let's look at the facts against him: - History of making poor decisions and not caring about others - Canucks' statement doesn't support Jake in any way, and they place him on leave immediately. Perhaps the latter is protocol? Seems a quick decision... almost as if they know something we do not. - Jake's twitter goes dark - No statement denying the allegations So on the surface, this really doesn't look good for him. BUT, innocent until proven guilty. I expected Jake to be off this team by the offseason, but not like this. One has to think the Canucks may use this to terminate his contract... which, if you think about it, might be really, really good for us.

Jake found a way to start scoring again. Wait for an empty net. Happy for him. This game has not been good. Yet another game that shows we won't be a playoff team until we can sort our our poor defensive decisions.
