  1. This is just bad. Team is all over the place. Has been since game 1. Hope Green figures something out with the added problem of a depleted d.
  2. I do think the changes have shaken the team as a group. Popular leaders who work their butts off leaving as a bunch is tough to take. These are times when our remaining leaders need to step up and unify the team off the ice. On the ice, it isn't unusual to take time to build chemistry with new key guys. Not to say all the bad plays and misses passes were to or from the newbies as I see it throughout our game, but it certainly doesn't help when these guys haven't meshed yet. Think about the changes: New #1 (?) goalie, a #2 D in Schmidt, a #4? 5? D in Hamonic, and a top 6 in Hogs. Very little time to prepare. I can't say I'm surprised. When the Blues looked brutal then came to win the cup, it showed me that anything can happen if it happens early enough in the season. We are still early, but with a shortened season it won't take long before the hill becomes very challenging to climb. Get on it Canucks - you can doo eeeet!
  3. I say 2 years. Gets us through covid, and gives Green a couple years to show he is more than a development coach. Honestly, I like Green, but since he took over I've always felt our team has lacked defensive structure. Greener has been good at getting the most out of individuals, but maybe not as good with our systems. Obviously, assistant coaches can be (or are) a big part of that too. There is a reason we have relied so heavily on our goaltending, and putting the hopes of a season squarely on the goaltending isn't fair to the goalies, but is also clearly a dangerous game to play. We need to get better. Really though, despite the losses we had in the off-season, this team isn't worse on paper than last year, yet the on-ice product has looked substandard so far. Green and co need to find a way to get this team gelling better and work systems that limit high-danger shots. If we don't see a meaningful playoff run inside the next two years, I think it'll prove time to move on.
  4. I believe we are dealing with 2 issues. First, team chemistry. Toffoli fit in right away but he left. Tanev was a huge loss in the locker room and on the ice. The team felt confident in Marky and played deep, and so far our goaltending has been average at best. We've lost some confidence in each other. I believe this will improve. Second, coaching and systems. I do like Greener, but there's been something wrong with our systems for years. I can't exactly pinpoint, but they just don't seem defensively effective. Never have. Like last year, we need to find ways to limit the opposition's access to high danger chances. Not sure why Myers was singled out. He might be overpaid but I felt he had a solid game. In fact, a solid season so far.
  5. Good for Marky I guess? Tonight's only positive I can draw. ...besides Hoglander still looking like he belongs. Kid needs to dial the 10 to a 9, and he will be fine.
  6. Hope Edler is ok. Thats a steady stream. Great way to end the night... Well, the paint on that truck looks amazing...
  7. I've been left largely underwhelmed by Jake over the years, but there is no point in shI**ing on him 2 games in. The whole Pettersson line was not sharp last night and I actually thought Jake had a decent 1st game.
  8. They don't call him the best player in the world for nothing. Guy makes many teams look silly, and he's on a mission to avenge his performance last night. Besides not being able to contain their best player, we've done not so bad overall. Looking forward to the 3rd.
  9. Wow - did this kid ever impress me tonight. I figured with his skill and drive he would be good, but not this good, this quickly. If he can play like that consistently, it takes the sting out of letting TT walk.
  10. Petey, Bess and Hughes looked fantastic out there, as did Hoglander. Seriously, that guy was flying out there, and able to process the game very quickly. I'll be honest- I expected him to he good, but not yet. He just walked into the NHL like it ain't no thang. Blown away. And excited! Virtanen, Sutter, Bo, Pearson all played strong games. Team looked quick out these tonight in the offensive zone. Chased it a little in the defensive zone sometimes. Fun game. Happy for the win. Hell, just happy to have hockey back.
  11. Was going to write something virtually identical. Though to be fair to Tanev, his value includes his character and leadership. Still....
  12. I was a fan who stressed we didn't want him. He obviously has good physical tools, but his ego and bad decision making always catch up with him. The team already needs to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to keep Jake on track.
  13. It was a disappointing play from Motte for sure. I appreciate treating even camp seriously, and typically love his intensity, but that was uncalled for. Especially after injuring Hawryluk, you'd think he'd let up on his own teammates.
  14. I figured about the same, though I had Hughes just shy of Pettersson at maybe 6.5. But really, the contracts should be thereabouts. These guys aren't gonna ask for the moon if they do a bridge. It's the following contract that will be the one that would really strap our cash because we could very well see double digits then. To make that much money. Geesh. As for Pettersson's rank in the NHL, I too would put him in the top 20 easily as of today. As said, it isn't just his scoring but his overall impact on the ice. Some don't realize how good he actually is defensively as his scoring is always the focus, but he's an excellent all-around player. Once he gains more muscle and experience I do expect him to be in the top 10 if not top 5 in overall players in the league. He may never score as much as McDavid, but he has much to offer that McJesus cannot, and it isn't just personality.
  15. Simmer down, chap. I put a happy face in for a reason. Meant no offense - I just happened to feel like my opinions were quite different so I commented. This is a public forum, after all... I do have my reasons for the list as I see it, though on ones where we were similar in thought, they tended to mimic your own reasons. I will concede my placement of Montreal so low is the one that might come back to bite me...
  16. This precisely. IF Hoglander continues to impress at camp.
  17. I think it will look like this: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Hoglander Rooster Gaudette JV Motte Beagle Sutter Macewan Hawryluk Bailey Baertschi Edler Schmidt Hughes Hamonic OJ Myers Rathbone Rafferty I honestly didn't think we would see Hoglander as a serious contender to earn that 2nd line spot but he's been looking great at camp.
  18. He came highly touted... enough to be in some scouting rankings to be in the top 3. There's no doubt fans will be expecting a lot from him, and there will be pressure for sure. But you.know what? Besides being drafted lower OA than Jake, I think Pods will be a Motte-style player whereas he works his ass off and is tenacious on the puck. Fans will probably like him, even if he doesn't amount to the top 6 player many expect from him. Jake, on the other hand, doesn't seem to give it his all on or off the ice it is assumed by many that if he committed himself he would be successful, and *that* is why he gets the extra hate.
  19. I think Tanev is a slightly better skater than Hamonic, but neither are slugs. Its more the style of play, and the fact both can bail out their pairing partner as he pinches in. While neither score a lot of goals, they are both pretty close to equally capable of doing so imo. Don't get me wrong - I think Tanev is a very good player. I'm sorry to see him go, and I do think he is a bit of a better player overall than Hamonic, but I think if they find chemistry that Hamonic can play a similar (overall) game for Hughes as Tanev did. Hamonic is more physical, which offsets the small size of Hughes better than Tanev, and he is injured less often. I think it is those two traits which makes the swap somewhat close in value.Tanev is perhaps a bit faster, and likely better defensively 5 on 5. That latter point is important, because 5 on 5 has been our weakness in recent years past. It will be interesting to see how Hamonic pans out, but with the addition of Schmidt I am fully confident we will have a better D this season. I believe we spend more time on the offensive zone, and any small reduction in defensive acumen Hamonic may have against Tanev will likely be offset due to this. And come playoff time, I am WAY more confident in Hamonic's ability to absorb punishment with no ill effect. Very curious to see what he will actually end up signing for both in aav and term.
  20. Hughes on the top of that list? Sure. Schmidt on the list at all? Dunno about that... but I'm excited that he believes we have 2 of the top 5 dmen in the division... As for the pairings, I do agree we will see Schmidt on a different pairing from Hughes except in special occasions. I fully expect to see Hughes and Hamonic together if they can find chemistry. Hughes and Tanev made each other better, and I think we will see Green try to replicate that. Schmidt probably goes with Edler, leaving Myers with probably OJ. Considering Tanev was typically out for large parts of seasons and wasn't particularly physical, I kind of view Hamonic as a replacement as a wash over the course of a season. if not, a very small downgrade at worst. So that leaves Schmidt as a replacement to Stecher, which is a HUGE upgrade. (Bless Stechers soul). I'm happy with our D this year. I believe having 2 d pairings that are a scoring threat is going to make a big difference for us.
  21. Fixed it for you. I don't actually predict Vancouver will be first. I think it is possible, but every star would need to align for us. Otherwise, I feel this is a more accurate list. I'd love to look back at this post after next season to see how wrong I was.
  22. I think it's just his cap hit that many (such as myself) who have difficulty with considering what tangables he brings. Yes, he's a big man who has some skills, but 6m is a lot to pay for a guy who is only ok defensively, and perhaps already declining offensively (and was only above average to start with). I honestly believe we could replicate everything Myers brings with Trymkin, for a fraction of the price. With all that said, I don't think Hamonic is anywhere close to as good as Myers. He had a poor last season and should come much cheaper than his prior contract. He is, however, a relatively steady defensive presence we need to fill out the d corps, and will help on the PK.
  23. I'm on board with getting Hamonic for sure if the price is right. I do feel I want to see Schmidt scoring more than being put up against the top competition, so this makes up for at least some of the defensive ability we lost in Tanev. I see: Edler Schmidt Hughes Hamonic Juolevi Myers Or Edler Schmidt Hughes Myers Juolevi Hamonic The only negative is that it does block a young guy like Rafferty from getting in, but injuries always happen to us and especially with a compressed season, they will get their chance. I feel like the D will be noticably upgraded from last year. Schmidt gives us another true scoring threat aside from Hughes, which will be a huge boost. Defensively, I figure we are about the same, but we don't have to hold our breath every time Tanev gets hit with a puck or body. We get bigger overall, which is a plus as well. Stecher plays bigger than he is, but his size was always a liability.
