Alberta (where I live) finally laid down the law last night. Requests and guidance have given way to mandatory and enforceable policy. No visitors to your home. Classes grade 7-12 moved online. 25% max capacity in businesses. Masks must be worn in almost all workplaces. ...but yet, you can still go to the pubs and drink it up for the evening. Makes sense. I've been unemployed for almost 2 years now with this crappy Alberta economy, and this is going to make finding a job even more difficult as my savings quickly dwindle. Worst year ever.

I said yes, for 2 years. (Wish the poll just provided number of years since I don't want LESS than 2 years) Ultimately, this team is looking for results now. Or at least soon. I feel Green is good at developing youth and getting buy-in, but I'm not convinced he is as good at important winning-game elements like line matching and especially overall defensive structure. I feel 2 years gives him enough time to improve these deficiencies, as well as time for our young core to develop, AND get a couple more young guys as a boost to the team. By the end of these two years I think we will have a better idea how it is all working together and if he is the coach that can bring us to the promised land. And if not, we still have our now-developed core for another coach to work with. Green embraces this, as it gives him time to show what he can do with a built team. Like the players are doing, he takes a bit less now during uncertain times with covid in favour of a more juicy, long-term contract later. This works to his advantage in the long run, but helps ease the burden to the team right now when we need it the most. Win-win.

Agreed. Loui was an exceptionally disappointing signing, but that's all it has been. Messier is, and will always be the worst signing ever in Vancouver's history and future. And it isn't even close. I wish nothing ill on Loui. I just want him to do the honorable thing, and give this team a break by not reporting and we part ways. I know we are contractually bound, but it really is best for all. Then he can finish his career in Sweden if he wants to keep playing.

I think you are in the right ballpark for sure. I feel that the kind of character guys that Benning is trying to bring in (and Petey is certainly a character guy) are the kinds of guys who won't try to bleed the team dry to get very last bit of money, and as you say - he doesn't exactly have the best leverage. I would prefer to sign him long term, since I don't feel there is too much risk involved with Petey. He has shown himself to be a consummate professional and despite being pretty light for his height, he has also shown himself to be surprisingly durable so far. As he gets bigger he will be even more so, and I also predict as he gets bigger and stronger it will have a marked positive impact on his stats as well on both sides of the ice. If there was any scenario in which to sign long-term, this is pretty much it, and it still gives him enough time for one more big, long-term contract after this one. Win-win.

Hockey guys take on Canucks off season moves
kloubek replied to Jack in the box's topic in Canucks Talk
To me, our season depends on a lot: -Is having a legit 2a in Schmidt going to be enough to keep it in the other end so much more? How well does Schmidt play defensively after the move? Can OJ pick up the slack? -Young unproven guys might step up. Our young PROVEN guys continue to improve and get bigger and stronger- in particular Petey and Huggy. -Jake Virtanen needs to step it up and be top 6... otherwise we just haven't replaced Toffoli and that extra skill up front. -Are we depending on Benn or a young pup for 3rd RD role? Dangerous, but potentially doable. -Perhaps biggest one to me: Goaltending. Can Holtby bounce back under Clark OR does Demko run with it? One will need to happen. I agree with the above that I see us 1st to 5th. -
I don't think Myers is a bad mentor for Jake. For a big man, I don't think he's ever had problems being in shape. As much as I rag on Jake, I *really* hope he turns the page and takes it all seriously. A fit and focused Jake is a difference maker.

This. I am no snowflake and don't really get offended easily, but I don't view this as appropriate for children. For adults, suck it up.

Oops. Don't know where Fanta came from - he's long gone. And if he wasn't, I'd be calling for an upgrade. I 100% meant Juolevi. Rathbone is a possibility, but I really expect Juolevi for his defensive game.
-
Not sure anyone cares. That was a long time ago, and it isn't like we can keep future players from wearing numbers that belonged to our good players over the years unless we officially retire them.
-
With the left a pretty likely lock with Hughes, Edler, and Fanta, playing Benn on the right could make some sense.
-
We are going to learn a lot about surface transmisson tonight. We ended up taking items from some 100 households? What about you?
-
I'm with you on that. Benn didn't show as I expected and we have no reason to believe he will be a better fit this coming season. Rafferty is an option, but ideally we would have a defensive guy on that right side to replace the role Tanev played. I want to see Schmidt be left to play a strong offensive-minded role.

[Signing] Stars re-sign Julius Honka
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It wasn't long ago it seemed CDC was all over wanting to get Honka, at a hefty price. Glad that never materialized. -
Is there any job where you can simply decide the risk is too much and fail to report to work, yet still get paid? Not that I can think of. The NHL will be responsible for putting all realistic measures in place, and the players should probably be allowed to sit out the season if they deem the personal risk too great, but imo they should NOT get paid, and the cap should be available to sign another player. Just my 2 cents.

Wow - his stock has taken a beating. This is a guy who has a good chance of putting up real top six numbers for nearly league minimum? That's a steal - regardless of his deficiencies.
-
You think? Don't get me wrong- Bure was simply amazing. But that was an era of hockey where players in general were slower, smaller, and not as skilled. I believe we are seeing the most talented hockey ever right now, and I believe even an above average player today would have been a star 30 years ago. So again, Bure was awesome. But then you look at McDavid now and think, wellllllll..... he's quite a bit better.

875k has been reported. Yet another loss of a good player at a good price.

Word is on Twitter Leivo is signing in Calgary. I was really hoping to see him back. Wonder if JB feels he won't be the same player?
-
I don't think that just because we typically play an offensive-minded game that we can't add a defensive angle as well. In fact, I'd say that aspect is something that has been lacking on our team - despite Green seeming to prize 2-way play. After thinking about it further, you're probably right on the 2nd line being a better fit, as far as how the 2nd is played against opponents. That leaves Brock to focus on getting his snipe back on. I can't believe (or can I) how difficult it is to move cap this year. I thought for sure Benning would have found a way. One more top 6 would make a big difference for us, 1 year deals seem the rage this year, so its a perfect time to find a stop-gap until reinforcements arrive.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen

Ha. Sorry. Reading fail. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
No Jayce as an extra? I'd sooner play him over LE. To me, we bury LE as best we can. I never want to see him play a Canucks game again. That completely healthy forward roster is basically identical to what we had last year, and we barely made the playoffs. We are going to have to rely on being healthy (never happens) as well as the development of our top six AND great goaltending. Really, the only possible improvement we made was having a 2pp guy in Schmidt and I'm not sure thats enough to move the needle upward considering we lost a really good defensive D in Tanev, and defense is consistently our biggest problem. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Was hoping it would be a bit less thanks to his inconsistency, but probably about what was expected to most, given he IS a point-every-other-game guy. It's time for Jake to buckle down and take this contract seriously if he wants a big payday in two years. You're in your mid 20's now Jake - No more BS. Be a professional and grow your career. -
I agree with you - to an extent. Nobody should be considered "disposable", and by putting the economy first, that's exactly what we are doing. But you know what? Society has done this forever. We don't twin highways because it is too expensive, and people die as a result. We offer free medical care to a point, but if you aren't covered you could die. Or, if the wait time is too long you could die in the meantime. We need blood banks full to save lives, yet the government isn't interested in paying people for their blood like they do elsewhere. We could have a whole fleet of air ambulances, yet most cities don't. The economic/death balance has and always will be in play. In addition to that, we still don't know enough about this whole scenario. What ARE the long-term effects physically? How many people are losing their savings and potentially ruining their futures when we shut down? How many are committing suicide because they've run out of money, or their mental health is taking a beating because they are out of a job (like me) or just can't handle the stress of all this? This really isn't a black and white situation we find ourselves in, and I don't think it is realistic to be completely pro-economy OR pro-health, or even have enough information to take a properly educated concrete stance either way, for that matter. And on that note, try not to get too emotionally vested in the debate. You don't have the answers. They don't have the answers. But what we do have is a serious scenario that is bound to cause people to develop serious (and varying) opinions. But at the end of the day, we really are all in this together, and the more we all treat each other as such, the easier it will be for us all to come out unscathed, and the less we get down about it, the better our mental health will be. For example: Maybe masks don't make a huge difference. Maybe they do. But why not wear one to both make the 95% of others more comfortable, as well as potentially save a life? Why not keep your 6ft distance, even if you believe it is a hoax. I personally believe religion is a hoax, yet I respect the rights of others to believe in it, and will remain polite when they come to my door. I have never seen Canada more divided. Yet, we should be (figuratively) closer than ever.

While I agree with your overall idea, no way Hoffman comes here for 1m - regardless of how much fun he would have playing with Petey.
