[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I am trying to make sense of all this. I'm confident Benning hired TT because Boeser was out and we were not likely to make the playoffs or make quite the impact IN the playoffs without help. Fine. I get it. Mission accomplished. But that is a lot to pay for a dozen and a half games if he wasn't going to re-sign him. 4.25 wasn't possible for what was effectively our 1st line RW? Petey said he wants to play with him. So this was all for... playoff experience? Sorry, that falls flat with me. I don't get the about-face. Benning did say he wanted to revamp the D. I believe that is indeed his focus, and I imagine he is comfortable that between our current wingers and some excellent prospects in Podz, Hogs, and maybe Lind that we don't need wingers for the future or to take on cap with term. (I don't think he believes in Virtanen any longer either, and expect him to be traded soon.) This off-season has been the most uncomfortable one I can recall. Benning making a bunch of head-scratching moves so far. (Tanev and Marky I can maybe justify) I'm not full panic yet, and I know there is plenty of time still, but he better come through somehow because right now this is not a playoff team. Edit: And the fact no dead weight has been moved? I realize the flat cap sucks and teams want a premium but even moving 1 bad contract (LE) makes all the difference... even if its costly. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Honestly, his stats have been trending down for more than 2 years. I hope Ian gets Holtby back to at least a good backup. The rest, I figure, is as a mentor to Demko. Benning believes in him, and wanted to get the right character to help him develop into a #1. -
[Signing] Red Wings sign Troy Stecher
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I will miss Stecher and it's sad to see him leave the team he loves. 1.7 is very reasonable and its even more a shame Benning didn't want to pay that. I'm ok with this, but now our right side is even more depleted. If Benning feels Rafferty or Chatfield can slot in (and he does) we still badly need a big body that is good on D on that right side. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see us offer sheet Cernak. -
[Speculation] Canucks interested in Tyson Barrie
kloubek replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Again, Barrie is fine when paired with a quality defensive defenseman. But if we lose Tanev, we lack that player and already need one to watch the back of Hughes. I strongly feel we need another scoring D, but not as a replacement to the only good defensive blueliner we have. Besides, I expect Rafferty to push hard next camp and we also have Rathbone as an option soon. -
[Signing] Maple Leafs sign T.J. Brodie
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not at all. I was coming in here to say I believe this contract could come to bite them. -
It absolutely is. Had no idea. That's hilarious.

Alright alright alright. Let's roll with the kid.

[Rumour] Canucks have not offered C.Tanev a contract extension
kloubek replied to EP40.'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm sure he has others, unless he has the worst agent ever. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is the only part I was suggesting. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Absolutely true. It is also true that over the last 2-3 years it's clear their career trajectory were quickly moving in opposite directions. -
[Signing] Flames sign Jacob Markstrom
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
6m is really not quite as bad as people are making it out to be. It's expensive, but look at some of the absurd contracts out there. It may have been more if it wasn't for the flat cap. Marky played very well behind our team with really poor defensive structure and I feel he is better than his already-good stats suggest. I think he will do well in Calgary and I wish him and his suit the best. The real issue is length. They are apparently banking on him remaining healthy and productive as long as possible. There are already questions about his groin. This is a risky signing that could really go either way imo. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
You have been saying this a lot, but I feel it's pretty misleading. The Marky scenario was a complex one for various reasons, but the end result IS a 1.7m annual cap savings for a potential 2 years. In a flat cap league and a team against it (along with spots to fill) you better believe that the extra cap factors into the decision - even if it isn't the primary reason. Gonna miss Marky. But this was likely the correct decision. Now I have to make my son a Demko practice dummy. -
[Signing] Panthers sign Alexander Wennberg
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Me too. (If we had the room by moving Sutter or Beagle) Thats great value. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Think to the future. You look really think he was going to be the same goalie at 35 or 36? We also save cap in the meantime. Sad to see Marky go too, but this may end up the right decision. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think he means NOW. Not the past. Holtby hasn't had a season worthy of a #1 since 2016/17 season. To me, it looks like overpayment too. -
[Signing] Oilers sign Kyle Turris
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Lol. Oilers have been the worst mismanaged teams in the league for years. -
[Signing] Red Wings sign Bobby Ryan
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Good low risk, high (medium?) reward. Would have been happy to see him sign with us for that term and hit, but I guess we really have no shortage of wingers. -
[Signing] Panthers sign Radko Gudas
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Thought he might be a good backup plan for us. -
All that for nothing. Arizona got greedy and Benning did his best to accommodate, but glad he didn't cave. With that said, he better have a plan B or C to upgrade the D.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Tyler Motte
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Fine by me. Fits our 4th line perfectly and that hit is quite acceptable for what he brings. -
[proposal] Wennberg & Anderson for Virtanen, Roussel+
kloubek replied to 86Viking's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I still think he -could- bounce back with some points as well. Worth the risk if we do move Sutter, and if there is cap space. Move Gaudette to wing with him. -
Proposal, Mikael Granlund UFA
kloubek replied to garthsbutcher's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
If we do lose TT, he seems like a reasonable fill-in who could possibly have a bounce back season in a new system. 1 year deal probably makes the most sense for both parties. -
There were previous reports that the player we were shipping out to save cap had only 1 year left on his contract. Not sure if that is true. Or anything, for that matter. So much speculation.

This whole bloody off-season is dragging on. I know Benning is hard at work behind the scenes, but from the outside he's done nothing really so far and the things he HAS done are generally uncomfortable. Most anxious off-season ever. Plan A is seemingly riding on OEL. Hopefully we see something soon.
