I love what Motte brings to the team, but I would prefer he just does what he does currently. Hard work along the sides and in the corners. Harder to do at center position. I also don't know if he's shown his passing is anything more than average. Or smarts, tbh. Or hands, really. There is a reason Green was asked why he is even in the lineup. But he is, because he has one hell of a motor and mental drive, speed, and is one of our hardest workers and most prolific hitters we have. I love Motte. Let him Motte.

Likewise. But we need more than Hughes imo. Stecher shows being offensively aware at times, and Edler can put up points sometimes as can Myers, but I really think we still need a 2a who can both us to apply almost continuous pressure from the blueline but especially for the 2nd power play unit. This scoring by committee thing isn't good enough as for some reason our d is where offense goes to die. Hopefully we can look internally at Rathbone or perhaps even Rafferty if he shows well at camp.

Manny has been nothing but class for our organization. I wish him the very best.
-
Minny so badly needs a center, they traded Staal for a winger today.
-
It certainly isn't. I would imagine that given his regression (since injury?) plus a 6m, ongoing contract would make many GMs think twice in this cap strapped world. Surely a motivated Jake would be a welcome option against Kunin or Zuccarello. But if they are truly after a center, then whadda ya do...

Ok... fair enough. Guess the KHL playoffs end in April. But can he not join us after that?

Signings: Tryamkin, Leivo, Markstrom, Toffoli, Tanev, Leivo Leaving Ferland on the roster because I don't know whats going on there. If we were able to get him back healthy, he would slot in 3rd line. Trades: Virtanen, Woo or Gadjovich to Wild for Dumba. I think everyone knows what Virtanen is capable of when he wants to. He will never be that player here. Wild could use some scoring help. Woo helps to replenish the D prospects or Gadjovich is a Wild-type, heavy player. With the signing of Brodin, its clear Wild are not basing their d core on Dumba. Something has gotta give considering the other high salaries. Wild are in a position to lose him at the ED anyway. Eriksson, Stecher, Focht to Ottawa for Anisimov. Ottawa saves a couple million in real dollars and helps them get to the cap floor. They get a solid d-man in Stecher who will show their young team how to play hard, and a middling prospect in Focht. For us, we move LE. We take back some salary in Anisimov, but save a bit in cap, and it's only for 1 year then we can let him walk when Hughes and Petey are reupped or maybe re-sign him cheaper. Another benefit is for Podkolzin to have an instant Rusky connection on arrival as well as Tryamkin. Sutter moves somewhere for a 4th. Pearson moves somewhere for a 2nd. Benn and Rouse for nothing and a 7th. Find a way to move Baer. New lineup: Miller Pettersson Toffoli Gaudette/Hoglander Horvat Boeser Ferland Anisimov Mackewan/Podkolzin Motte Beagle Leivo Hughes Tanev Edler Myers Tryamkin Dumba Marky Demko With this plan, we remain cap compliant, add toughness, add another scoring defenseman in Dumba, and also free up cap next year for our 2 big signings.

Make no mistake about it. If we bring in Tryamkin, his role will be clear. Stick up for teammates, hit as much and as hard as you can while remaining defensively responsible and keeping the net clear. He will never be star player for us, but could fill that role better than anyone else. I think given the way we had difficulty being outmuscled in the playoffs that its clear we need to get bigger and tougher to play against and I feel signing him goes a long way towards that goal. With that said, I also believe we need an offensive defenseman in the lineup not named Hughes. Edler and committee can help, but our d is not dynamic enough. If Benning and co don't think we will have that 2nd guy soon in Rafferty or Rathbone (or long shot OJ) then I think we need to look for such a guy.
-
I think Lind's playing style is much more in line with the kind of game Green wants the team to play - especially for a bottom 6 role. I too feel Gaudette would be better in a winger position. He tends to seem overwhelmed at center - especially when the play ramps up. And despite his huge improvement this season, I have difficulty seeing top 6 potential in him. Perhaps top 6 like we used to have, but now that we have a really good top 6 I don't see him ever cutting it and expect either Hogs or Pods to get there first. If the return was right (see: Helping us move LE's contract) I would be willing to see him go. But if that happens, do we keep both Sutter and Beagle 3c and 4c? We really don't have any up and coming centers do we? Maybe this is not the time to move an NHL-ready center. Or, perhaps if we can move Sutter we could get a guy in like Jenner who plays a stronger physical game but can still pot some goals.
-
If that happens, I hope Green is willing to embrace a scoring 3rd line instead of a shutdown 3rd line. I'm fine with it; I think that's the direction the league is heading in anyway. Something tells me though that between the two, at least one of them will end up being a solid top six player. That also bodes well if we plan to move a top 6 guy out. (Pearson?)

Oh yes they are. Here in Calgary we have a larger-than-anyone-would-like hardline right following and they are very vocal. Exaggerations of "communist rule" are sickeningly common. I tell ya, as far as my family's safety here in Canada, I'm far more concerned about this group of people and the mentality they represent as opposed to virtually any other group of any sort - possibly including external terrorists. These are the people who hold a country back from progressing from a sociological perspective, all the while ignorantly and dangerously believing they have the answers, and that everyone else is wrong if they don't share their same values. Yes, the "Us vs them" movement is alive and well. Could be worse. Could be the States. There its a way of life for much of the country.

We absolutely did struggle, and he had a decent year by his standards. But we were struggling most of the run against bigger, stronger opponents overall. If we didn't improve with him in the lineup, I'd be REALLY worried. But besides being a physical presence and eating minutes, what does he really DO? His hits are not bone crushing despite being a huge guy. He keeps the play moving better than, say, Gudbranson but does little to drive it. His defensive ability is average. He isn't a leader, as far as I know. He doesn't fight. His possession numbers are not good. He is just.... there. And his statistical numbers back up that he just doesn't excel in any way at all. Now, I'm not claiming he is useless. He is our most physical dman (not saying much there) and his eating minutes eases the pressure on Tanev and Edler. But is that worth 6m? Like I said, I think Tryamkin would do a better job on the physical front. If one is not sold on Tryamkin, how about a guy like Gudas? We need a d that makes life difficult for the opposition. We need a TEAM that makes life difficult. While we hung in there as best we could, it was apparent we were physically outmatched by the Blues and absolutely outmuscled by Vegas and getting a couple wrecking balls on the team could help a lot. Same goes for the forward lines. If Ferland is done, we need a guy who can play like he was intended to.
-
I get that Myers eats minutes, and is a big guy who helps even the playing field against more physical teams. But he is just so bad in every statistical category. (Other than maybe penalty killing?) If Seattle wants him I would be happy for them to make that selection. I think there are far better ways to spend 6m. Bring in Tryamkin for the snarl and size. He does it better for a third of the price. Just may have to spread a couple minutes around... I was really hoping Myers would help us with scoring a bit. I feel despite Hughes being godlike, if we aren't going to hit in our prospect pool (This is not ruled out. I'm looking at you, Rathbone) we would be better served finding a good 2a guy.

I do agree - he seemed tentative. I still can't help but think the uncertainty of Duke's future health is a distraction for him. They're real close and between that and his injuries, I just don't think he's in the best place right now mentally. As far as skills and ability, he has indeed grown as a pro and I think at some point he will overcome what is keeping him from being as tenacious as he could and should be and get back to being that play driver.
-
I would agree that with Hogs and Podz coming soon that we need that #2d more than we need Boeser. Severson would be a great add. Risto is big but a defensive disaster. We need guys who can help the d - not make it even more porus. I think we really want Tanev back. He has proven he can be more durable supporting Hughes, and by all accounts is a great leader for our youth.
-
I don't agree we should keep Virtanen. If these playoffs weren't enough to light a fire under him, what will be? He has squandered chance after chance. I still believe he has the capability of being an impact player - but it won't be with us. This team is built on heart and soul, and he is the odd man out. As for Richardson, I'm on board. Always liked him and he tries hard. Saves 2m cap over Virtanen and isolates us from a potential arbitration settlement. As for the topic of moving Motte to 3c, no thanks. Motte is most effective in limited minutes on the 4th line so he can give it his all put there. He cannot sustain that playing style with significantly increased ice time PLUS the added responsibilities of a center. I love Motte and expect him to sign another contract with us, but let the guy do what he's been doing.

I was happy with Fanta's play as well. Smart, safe plays. Perfectly fine as a 7th/6th guy. Pretty useless offensively, though. Sure hope OJ can be effective next year - even in a bottom pairing capacity. It would be especially nice if he could manage to feed the forwards quickly and put up some points of his own. We had difficulty breaking through the tough Vegas lines and really need more from the d to be able to transition. We can't rely on Hughes to be the only offensive driver from the backend.
-
Yeah, thats what I thought.
-
Nope. As others have said he was indeed rushed in his rookie year, but after that the team took a developmental approach. This team showed great patience trying to teach him how to play properly, and Green did what he could to light a fire under him many times to no avail. I wouldn't write him off quite yet. Maybe one day he will commit himself. It just isn't going to happen in a Canucks jersey.
-
...because we need to shed cap and/or recover picks. On another team not so cap strapped, who knows. But that 3.5 or whatever it will be (worse if he chooses arbritration?) is too much for us to pay a guy who just isn't maturing much and appears somewhat invisible in the playoffs. To be fair, I wouldn't mind JB reassessing a couple other contracts in our rather expensive bottom 6.
-
Obviously Demko. Nuff said on that. I also liked our battle and effort. I really think playing heavy teams caught up to us and obviously Demko allowed us to get to a game 7 against Vegas, but even though our guys were beat up and bruised, they still pressed on and went deeper than anyone expected. I also like seeing some other Canadians supporting the Canucks as the last Canadian team standing. I've even started to hear compliments from rival fans who can finally admit we've built a good team here. Living in Calgary, I have tired of hearing the same old anti-Canucks song and tune from Flames fans. Eat it.
-
Possibly. And that would be great. But even if his scoring doesn't improve, I feel he is about as strong of a player you could ask for on a 4th line.
-
I was afraid I would yet again disagree with Burke but he said pretty much everything I've been saying on CDC over the last few days - though I hadn't thought about the impossibility of signing Stecher until someone today brought up a 3m qualifying offer. He will have to go. And that saddens me. I think he hit the nail on the head in every regard. Though if Benning manages to move a contract or two, I could see TT remaining. And I also wouldn't be surprised to see us sign Edler again on the cheap for further reduced minutes after next year. Allow him to see his career through to the cup. Motte absolutely stays. No way Greener lets him go. Marky signs. We cannot afford to risk the future by taking a gamble on Demko. I will say again: He had 3 amazing playoff games. His regular season was unspectacular. Jim is great at assessing young talent, so I'll trust what he does with Jake. There just HAS to be a way to send LE to a rebuilding team. Clearing his cap would make a world of difference. He gets paid almost nothing in real dollars and his contract is almost up. Even Baer is a guy who could play a 2nd line role on a basement dweller. As he did ours. And perhaps his concussion issues are now healed up. Like everyone I'm apprehensive about our cap situation but there are moves that can be made to alleviate that. Benning hasn't pulled the trigger to make it happen yet, but now that his back is against the wall, clearing bad contracts is the obvious choice imo... even if that means adding b level prospects or other sweeteners.
