  1. Right? His body was built for this. Sadly, his brain was not.
  2. I think he will play. I know we have more seasoned options but I don't believe the big stage is a problem for him. Like you say - he has been in big championship games and I feel like all the crap he has had to deal with to get to this point has made him stronger than most would expect by his age and games played. The only thing is whether he is the more skilled 6th D. I believe he is.
  3. Oops. So he was. Ok.... One after the other. Going off rookie points per game alone these two are in a league of their own. Kootenay: I hope so too, because I don't see anyone else in our prospect pool who could be that guy. I would love if Rafferty could be, but most have rather tempered expectations there... But really, Hughes gives us that dynamic presence from the back end we have never had. If we had a guy to quarterback the 2PP and help apply pressure 5 on 5 we would be in even better shape. Considering our D isn't great at limiting quality scoring chances as it is, I guess a second scoring star is a tall ask.
  4. https://canucksarmy.com/2020/08/09/quinn-hughes-just-put-up-the-most-dominant-postseason-series-ever-by-a-canucks-defenseman/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook "And his performance still stands as, in all likelihood, the greatest single series by a defenseman in Vancouver Canucks history." It is truly amazing that Makar came into the league the exact same time because Quinn really is the best defenseman we have ever had but also soon to become one of the best defensemen in the NHL. To have TWO generational defensemen like that in one draft year is unreal. (And yes, given their stats compared to historical d-men, they appear by this point to be just that). We have needed a guy like this for soooooo long. Still wouldn't mind another blueliner who can put up some numbers. We have been relying too heavily on Huggy imo.
  5. I don't know how far our boys will go, but it doesn't get easier from here on. Only way we end up moving on in the playoffs is if we have a couple guys play absolutely heroic and Marky will have to be one of those guys. Our D is simply not good enough for him not to. We won against the Blues during the season. We can again. ...but it may be a war of attrition. Blues are a big, heavy team. Not gonna matter if Marky plays well if we lose more key guys.
  6. Just announced on SN that it is indeed similar symptoms. I wish the very best for Ferland, and echo the thoughts here that his well being is worth more than anything. I also thought the staged fight was ridiculous.
  7. He will play next game. Guaranteed. We are going to need bodies due to recent injuries. Glad to see Jake play well. I agree he still needs to hit harder or a bit more (if he can without being out of position) but he really helped out there - especially using his speed against the breakaway. Not many of our players would have caught up there. As far as someone claiming this indicates he isn't so bad defensively: Attempting to stop a breakaway is a pretty straightforward action that any NHL player would do if they had the speed. His ability to skate is well known. It's when he has to anticipate the play and be in the right position where he struggles. I just wish Jake would put in a 100% effort most games. He can so clearly help us when he does.
  8. Not *another* concussion. But there is nothing saying perhaps he isn't still feeling reoccuring symptoms.
  9. Nice to see: The hard work paying off. Green and the team changing up their game to get behind the Wild D. (Sometimes) Supreme work by Motte and a great PK tonight Loui threw a hit. I kid you not. Virtanen back in. Played hard and may have saved a goal. Petey standing up for himself. Who needs protection? Hope he doesn't get in trouble for that hit on the neck. Looked minor but he dropped something fierce. The only issue appears to be early injuries. We may test our depth early.
  10. I swear to God I saw LE throw a hit in tonights game. Might be able to catch it on a highlight reel.
  11. Judging by the way Jake is playing by 2nd intermission, it appears so. Message was sent and apparently delivered. As for this game, we are finding ways as per the plan to get in front of the net. Way more chances tonight. Watch Minny get scared and go with Dubnyk for game 3.
  12. Maybe. Though one has to wonder if that was true how he managed to remain in coaching so long...
  13. All these people demanding Jake goes in. I am not disagreeing, but perhaps Green knows something you don't? Maybe he isn't in game shape? He didn't exactly have any amount of jump in camp. ...just saying...
  14. Ditto. Wife hasn't seen me so animated in months. My thoughts: Minny was just a little sharper, had better goaltending (though I don't fault Marky for the 2nd goal. That one is on Edler). I loved how we were finishing almost all checks - though the intensity seemed hard for us to sustain. I can't help but feel like our plays tend to be weak. Like we try it, but it often doesn't click. I don't really feel it is a chemistry thing which by all accounts is strong. I am no expert or even highly knowledgeable in the ways of the playbook, but I can't help but feel we are being consistently outcoached by other teams who seemingly execute their game plan far better. I like Green and believe the team does as well, and have supported his being here. I do question what a change would do though. All kudos to Minny but if you look at our scoring talent, we should be able to set up plays better than what we saw tonight. Petey was pummelled but was far more physical than I expected. Another 15 lbs and he will be fierce. Given the physicality level, I think it is time to see Jake in unless Green feels he is badly regressed. One game was enough of a message maybe? He is also battling for a contract... Team really competed hard. Credit Green where credit is due. Boeser truly has improved his skating.
  15. Gaudette isn't strong defensively. BUT... There is nothing that says your 3rd line has to be a defensive line anymore. That is largely a model of the last era. Today, teams can have 3 scoring lines and as long as they outscore the opponents it's all good. I can see Gaudette centering a 2b style line. Also, the kid is young. It is clear he has much to learn, but I feel he is the kind of guy who will give it his all to soak up all the advice he gets. He could very well be trained in the coming years to improve both his faceoffs as well as defensive acumen to be a good 2-way player in the end.
  16. Difference is that when Jake has decided to, he has made a real impact to games. We have seen flashes of very good hockey from Jake. We never saw that from Taylor. So, perhaps similar in that they both had really high potential and never met it, but different in the fact that Taylor simply didn't have the skillset required. And the jury is still out on Jake. I believe he DOES make an NHL career for himself.
  17. I truly believe it is. How else does one explain him coming to camp out of shape, or having a brutal training camp and losing his spot on the opening roster despite his obvious skill? How about his slow development? Lack of defensive responsibility? How about his lack of distancing before camp or his other public gaffs? Some may account his lack of hockey IQ (or IQ in general perhaps) for some of this, but I think his lack of drive accounts for the majority of this. Up to this point, he simply hasn't yet chosen to commit himself to his career. He probably will decide at one point to buckle down but the Canucks ship is about to sail off and I feel he has run out of time to get on board. At least he hasn't been vocal about his likely displeasure to always being in the doghouse. If he had, I expect he would already be on a different team.
  18. Was responding to Hectic. Ferland WAS pretty meh. Most of the team was though. No excuses - they all have to be better if we are going to even win the play-in series. Ferland will need to do what he was hired for. I am ok if he took an exhibition game off. Stupid to sit Jake for Ferland? I don't agree. Camp is a time to show what you did to maintain yourself over the break, to show what you can do, and to battle at camp for your spot. Some players like Petey or Hughes will be gifted spots of course, but spots are up for grabs and Green doesn't feel like Jake was the best option. Others had a far better camp and I imagine came in better shape. That includes Ferland. So leading to critical play-in games, why would Green put in Virtanen, who has so far shown to be a non-factor since hockey returned? To me, THAT would be stupid. He said straight up that he put the players on the ice that he felt gave us the best chance to win. And you know, I'm almost inclined to think Green might have a greater insight into how his players are likely to perform over you and I. At the same time, Virtanen is fully aware of what he accomplished before play stopped and what a critical time this is for the team to score. Yet - sitting up there by himself, you gotta wonder if that irony (and also Green's last attempt to get through to him) is going to resonate, or if he is crying inside about how he should have been gifted a spot. ...at least he seems to have some fans in agreement.
  19. Jesus. He has had ONE preseason game since coming back. How about we give Ferland a chance?
  20. Thought the energy was pretty good... at least up to the last few minutes. The team played pretty sloppy with too many giveaways throughout... save for the first few minutes. But what else is new....
  21. Watched the Habs/Leafs game last night to get me in the mood. Stoked to finally see our Canucks play!!
  22. That is actually better than I expected. For the gaffs I see, guess he's doing a lot right. I do hope to see him throw his weight around more in the playoffs. Maybe score a bit more too if he can - besides Hughes we are still lacking from the back end.
  23. So did Goldobin. That got us nowhere. Sometimes, the player just doesn't get it. I hope he is left off the opening roster, and I hope it pisses him off. So much so that his inner child rage rises up with a big "I'll show you, Mr. Meany Greeny" and he goes on a Calgary-era Ferland-esque tear.
