[SIGNING] Goldobin signs with CSKA Moskow
kloubek replied to Beefcake's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Comparing Goldy to Schaller is apples to oranges. Schaller was expected to be a 4th line player with some grit and defensive acumen, while potting goals occasionally. He was never, ever going to be a top 6 player. If he had been better, he would have filled the role perfectly. Conversely, Goldy was never going to be a bottom 6 player - even if he improved his defensive game. He WAS expected to put up points, and I don't think anyone expected him to be gritty. With the team moving to a bigger, harder team, Goldy was already an odd man out to some degree. And when it was proven he couldn't get his d game to where it needed to be either, there just wasn't a spot for him. Given that Goldy had ample chances to round out his game I realize I am probably wrong, but somehow I have a gut feeling we will see Goldy back in the NHL at some point. I think a couple more seasons of working at completing his game in the KHL could do him good if he is smart enough to continue working on what he was asked while he was with us. -
I am proud that my province is doing this. As it should be - Canadians helping Canadians. We brought in a lot of money for Canada (and subsequent equalization payments to provinces) as well when oil was booming. Unfortunately, we haven't had a lot of help with getting our main industry back on track from either the feds or the BC government, and I expect after the outbreak ends we will be forgotten again. At least Keystone is gonna be a go after extensive delays largely thanks to Horgan. It isn't all Alberta needs, but it will help a lot. As an (now) Albertan, I look forward to our own provincial recovery which will in turn allow us to continue helping our fellow Canadians. That is especially important now, more than ever.

[SIGNING] Goldobin signs with CSKA Moskow

Arrogant? Goldy is a class act. He never complained about how he was handled and even came back to the Canucks to give it another go. Even when asked direct questions about not being benched or in the AHL, not once did he badmouth the Canucks. I wish he was able to put together a more complete game as I really liked him. I wish him the very best in the KHL and hope he makes a more successful return to the NHL.- 167 replies

I see no reason (from the outside looking in) why he wouldn't want to re-sign with us. His career has never been better, Vancouver is one of the nicest cities in the league, he has fit right in, and the team is up.and coming. I am sure we will try to retain him so I just hope he doesn't try solely to chase the money as I am not sure we can afford to pay him what he could probably get elsewhere.

Both Fox and CNN have their own right wing, left wing agenda. I do frequent CNN because I hate Trump, but take their anti-Trump narratives with a grain of salt. It is surprising (or perhaps jist sad) how challenging it is to find solid, yet unbiased reporting.

We have a nice big yard here in Calgary. Unfortunately as I type this, it is damn near a blizzard out there. The weather has been as bleak as the virus outlook here.
-
Well yeah, but that was a very small amount in the US. What was it... 10? It also isn't nearly as contagious, and if you have Ebola, you know it. This is an entirely different animal. Not nearly as deadly, but far easier to spread.
-
Well yeah... but having a questionable health care system has been America's problem forever. Though Trump could have made it better, and should have made improvements to pandemic readiness given the results the Obama administration found, the entire system was broken for decades before Trump took office. I do hate the guy, but the system he inherited had big issues which are hard to fix without devoting mega cash. One can imagine how impossible that would have been for him, and his perspective on the importance of cash.

You got it. The numbers don't really mean much. There are just way too many variables to factor in to make it even remotely accurate. And I'm talking industrialized nations like Canada and USA. It gets worse as you look at developing nations where information doesn't travel nearly as well, and testing is even more of a struggle. Then there are the asymptomatic or those with mild symptoms who aren't getting tested almost anywhere. What's the current world tally... 850,000 infected? Try 10-20 times that and maybe it's at least closer to the real number.
-
He made an important point to say millions in the US would have been killed, but they did a "great job" with their measures so it will "only" be 100-240k killed according to models. I guarantee he will try to spin it that he saved millions of lives. And his supporters will eat it up, not understanding that it could have been half that if he acted quicker.
-
Well that's exactly it. China tried hard to cover this up until it went worldwide, so I really don't blame Trump or other leaders for not being more prepared initially. However, when the US started getting cases, Trump dropped the ball BIG TIME. It took him weeks before having any kind of reasonable response or action and that timeframe was critical to try to stop the spread. Now they have almost 200k cases - people are dying, and frontline workers are breaking down. Oddly, I still don't see these facts changing much in his popularity. He can do no wrong in the eyes of his supporters: All the lying, misogyny and racism didn't change anything for him, and killing Americans and their economy won't either. TRUMP. F**K YEAH!

I've watched him play here in Calgary a few times. He tended to be noticable, but not exactly dominant. I was actually a little disappointed that he just didn't seem to be the physical presence I expected. (He seemed solid though and didn't shy away from contact.) He seemed to move the puck well and take smart shots. Overall, against harder competition, I feel he has a ways to go. I personally feel a couple years in the AHL are in order. But that's just my opinion based on 3 games. I am also hardly an expert on assessing raw talent.

Marky is back. The NHL can resume. ...or not.

Keep in mind, everyone, that stats are just that - stats. You need to dig deeper if you want to make any sense of it - and even then, none of us likely have degrees in this nor enough information to truly know how bad this will get. The numbers tell you mainly only confirmed cases. There are exponentially more people actually infected who have simply quarantined themselves as requested with mild symptoms, but aren't sure. Then there are the people who have no idea because they feel fine right now. Known cases will grow a huge amount as symptoms get worse and are confirmed, as people who previously thought they were healthy and ended up not being so, and the asshats who are either not following the social distancing rules or even those who are trying, but get it anyway. Without intervention from the warming of summer or a vaccine or a drug, we are going to be dealing with this for a very long time and I do not believe we are currently doing nearly enough to reduce what will likely be a massive case increase in the next couple of weeks. This is just the reality folks. No need to panic as that doesn't help anyone. But we ALL need to take this very seriously to limit economic fallout and personal health problems. This is not a drill. This is now. It is real. And we are running out of time... if we haven't already. The USA - well, they are just f'd. Trumps lack of response during the early weeks and even right now made it impossible for them to properly flatten the curve. It is too late for them. They are going up by 30-40% each DAY. Well ahead of any other country. It is honestly pathetic how little they have done, as Trumo gives his response a 10/10. (Of course) Let's at least try to give ourselves a chance.

You are talking about countries who may have democracies, but also have much more control over their population, and the population has more respect towards authority. Here in the West we are so concerned about not putting people out and basking in our relaxed rights, freedoms, and comparative luxury living that it is far, far harder to go on hard lockdown properly and successfully here. Look at the millennials on spring break in the US. That mentality lives (to a lesser degree) up here too. Hell - here today in a bedroom community 5 minutes from Calgary a group of 35 or so people held an anti-Trudeau rally in the middle of the busiest area in the city. Wake up! It is for those kinds of people that I would support legal repercussions. We have some people who are just a wee bit too relaxed and carefree.

^ That about sums it up. I feel this is about accurate. The measures being taken may indeed work, but life under lockdown for 1-2 years and the economic fallout it would create seems pretty awful.

I don't believe worldwide cases are dropping. In fact, I think I have read worldwide cases are getting really bad in some places. Just because the NHL is optimistic doesn't mean it is likely to happen. They aren't experts in disease. (To be fair, either am I) Mass group gatherings isn't going to be allowed for quite a while, in my opinion. Here's the thing - things will get better with the steps taken. We will initially get more cases (primarily as current carriers get symptoms) and perhaps some deaths and then it will likely drop. However, without a full lockdown of *everyone*, it will still continue to spread. Perhaps not as much as before, but it still will. And if that happens, we are only a week or two away from risking contaminating everyone again, due to how contagious this is. That's what I mean when I say I am not sure if we can stop it. I am not sure how long it will be feasible to keep everything locked down. Forever until all countries have no instances? That's why I am not certain we can stop it. As long as we are closing everything we can limit the spread, but to eradicate it completely from Canada will be a very difficult thing to do. And when/if we do, we better keep the borders closed or it will just ramp up again. I believe our response has been good. (Although I would have liked to see the borders close earlier). But is it enough?
-
There will be new cases for months at best. All the measures will indeed slow it down, but passing from person to person (some without symptoms) I can't see life returning to normal any time remotely soon. Reopening any public venues will just prolong things so I expect restrictions to be in place for a long time. Hate to say it, but I am not even confident we can stop it at all unless literally every single Canadian is ordered by law to self isolate for 2 weeks. That isn't feasible when you consider people need supplies, policing, medical care, etc - but even if it was there are many holes which would likely allow a handful of cases to keep going, and even a handful can spread out of control quickly. The season will be cancelled. There is really no way around it that I can see. And while that sucks, it is the least of our worries. I am not a negative person, but I am a realist. This virus will change our lives for a prolonged time and I believe it will only end once a vaccine has been made, tested, produced and administered. Just creating an effective vaccine is expected to take 12-18 months by what I have read. It's gonna be a long haul, folks. I am no scientist, but I predict at least 4-6 months of measures similar to what we are seeing right now, and several years of economic recovery and possible travel restrictions.
-
My father is there right now to take a flight home today. He took some pictures which were totally messed. City center just simply abandoned. As for measures here back home, expect more closures. The country will grind to a halt, and I fear it will be a prolonged halt because there really is no endgame in immediate sight.
-
Classes cancelled here across Alberta. Just a matter of time before BC does the same. I am not panicked. But this is all very uncomfortable. Especially knowing that with the world infected, these closures may last until a vaccine - which could be some time away.

What will happen to the Nhl season and Playoffs(poll)
kloubek replied to naslund.is.king's topic in Canucks Talk
The world is on lockdown. I can't see that improving significantly for minimum a month. Then nobody wants to be responsible for starting another outbreak, they will need time to be sure restarting isn't a noticable risk. I can't see play resuming for two months minimum. I say play a 72 game season. That allows for one to for games left depending on the team. Then shorten the playoffs to best of 5. That reduces time for everything significantly. Still allows for a truncated yet traditional playoffs, and a few games to battle for playoff position. Then work backward to June 30th, when I believe contracts end. -
Am I the only one singing "My Corona" to the tune from The Knack? Ok... just me then.
