There is no reason to be down on Bo. He is quietly on pace for yet another career year, all the while being tasked with leading this team AND continuing to get some tough defensive assignments. (Though a healthy Sutter and Beagle help a lot in this regard). Our captain is and will be just fine.

I just don't see us getting rid of Jake, and I'm sure management agrees. He is steadily progressing, can play up and down the lineup and gives us the size and speed we covet with this new(ish) team. I am sure Benning will work out a fair contract which probably will indeed be a bridge show-me contract that I expect Jake to accept, given all the development years we have put in for him. After that it is anyones guess as to whether we can afford to keep him or not, but we can worry about that then. I seem to view Pod's game as a potential replacement anyway.

Consistency.

I do think that on a whole, Hughes is the better player. He tends to get overlooked for his defense, but he gets tough assignments out there and imo does very well... especially considering his limited size. I do hope he wins the Calder for his sake, but at the end of the day I am just happy we finally have the elite scoring defender we have needed for so long.

My thoughts on the ramblings: Pettersson will be fine. He is slippery to some degree, is strong on his skates for his size, and has a frame that should see him top out at around 190-195 with extra muscle. Once that happens, he will be hard to get off the puck. Madden looks to be a really good prospect, and I wouldn't be too worried about his size. 5'11 isn't that bad of a height so he should fill out significantly. He's just a boy ffs. In a league that is transitioning to skill over size, he will be fine - especially considering he hasn't exactly show fear so far against much larger competition. My only concern with him was for potential injury until he got bigger. Now that's LA's problem, but I truly think he could end up a solid 2nd line center. With that said, we got a solid 2nd line (now 1st line) guy in return at a critical time, so I think we did very well. We know what we have with TT so there is limited risk. Much less risk than keeping Madden, who didn't really have a spot he could have taken on the team anyway given our depth in that position. Stecher: I was prepared to see him go, but I am glad to see him stay. He bleeds blue and green and it would be a shame to see him traded. He has actually played much better lately - something I can only figure is due to the newfound realization he is expendable. With that said, I would be surprised to see us keeping him. Even with a discount (which I am sure he would entertain) he just doesn't play a strong enough role we could get with an alternative. Plus his size is clearly not ideal for the kind of team Green and Benning want. To finish out the season, I do want to see if we can get Tryamkin on board and put him on the left side - even if that isn't his preferred side. I think he would pair with Stecher nicely: Edler Myers Hughes Tanev Tryamkin Stecher Benn, Fantenberg If Tryamkin works out I would actually like to see this going into next season and let training camp sort out if it sticks.

I would rather give up Beagle. I know his salary is less savings but it helps us more going forward (one less year) and I feel Sutter's ability to play wing, up and down the lineup as well as chip in for scoring more than Beagle makes him the more valuable player for our current team. Yes, Sutter has had injury issues - I am not oblivious. But I still view him as the better option to retain over Beagle.

I like TT, but this talk of giving up Boeser is crazy talk to me. He is a heart and soul guy for us, imo. Not only do we need a far larger sample size to see how TT works with this team long-term, we also don't know what Benning has up his sleeve in regards to the cap space issue. I still have this feeling he has a plan for getting LE off the books, making it possible to keep both.

1st vote (and it isn't close): Marky 2nd vote: Hughes 3rd vote: Miller This is the way I see it. Without the goaltending we have had from him, this team would be struggling to even be considered in a wildcard spot. He truly has won us several games on his own, and kept us in games we had no business being in. Quite literally, the season is likely lost without him. Hughes now brings us the dynamic aspect we have missed from the blueline since... well... ever. It makes a massive difference to have that level of movement back there for our forwards. He may very well end up our MVP at some point but I feel he is a luxury instead of an absolute necessity. My third pick for Miller is because I feel he is our best -overall- forward right now. He takes few nights off, seems to be a real leader, makes his linemates better, and plays a very strong game in the hard areas. Exactly the kind of forward we needed. But still - could we go on without him? I believe we could. Hence - the perfect player for us, but not one we couldn't live without if we absolutely had to. So yes.. Marky. My selection is part based on my long-standing belief that a strong goalie is the true cornerstone of a successful hockey team. The rest (defense/scoring) can be done by committee. Honourable mention: Tanev. He has had a great year defensively, a good year offensively (for him), has remained healthy, and I believe is a big reason why we have seen Hughes transition so quickly and well to the NHL.

I hope they take Myers. He isn't horrible... in fact, he is quite decent. But also quite inconsistent and imo not worth 6 million a year. Virtanen, on the other hand, is still progressing, brings some scoring, lots of speed, and at a far lower cost.

I know some have been high on Rathbone for some time. I personally haven't been keeping tabs on him, but man - he is in some very good company at this stage in his career. At one point I was rather worried about our only high end defensive prospect being OJ as I somehow am not that confident Woo will be a strong NHL player, but with Rafferty making waves and now Rathbone doing so well, I don't really see our defensive prospect pool as a problem anymore. Truly, guys... I've watched Canucks hockey for 3 decades now, and I have never seen our team draft and sign anywhere remotely close to the level we are seeing over JB's tenure. While I understand and agree with Benning's use of picks to bring in Miller and TT, it sure would have been interesting to see what other gems he and Brackett could have found. Thats OK - we picked up two great players who are as good (if not likely better) than what the draft would bring, without the required development time, no less. Sure hope we find a way to re-sign TT.

I think in the playoffs, anything is possible. But there are a couple certain teams I would be really concerned about. Oddly, it isn't so much the top teams like Colorado and the Blues, but namely Vegas and Winnipeg. (If they get in). But again, anything is possible.

[Speculation] Canucks interested in Tyson Barrie

A second scoring threat. -
[Speculation] Stecher might be on the market
kloubek replied to HerrDrFunk's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I love the effort Stecher puts in. He really tries out there, and it shows. He also has good overall skill. He is defensively responsible (minus pucks off the face), skates fairly well and can actually contribute to scoring when on his game. But that's where it ends. He doesn't have a role. He isn't a scorer. He isn't a super defensive guy like Tanev. He isn't a physical presence. He just....is. This team needs role players. Players which allow Green to say: I need _____ from my team right now, so I will put out ______. Stecher doesn't give you this, and I think it is clear he probably never will. That, combined with his RFA status for our cap-strapped team and what appears to be lost confidence by Green leads me to expect he is all but gone from this team if we either get a role d back, or if we feel we have a suitable replacement in Tryamkin or Rafferty. I feel these rumors DO have teeth. But if so, I feel for the guy. He grew up watching the Canucks, tries his heart out and seems like a good guy, but the fit just doesn't really seem to be there. -
Knowing that we got TT to keep in the playoff race makes a lot of sense to me. Benning and Green have said repeatedly how much young players learn in the playoffs, and without another scorer to replace Bess we may not see the post-season. Even as it is, we need to pick it up a little. I'm fine with this trade, as well as what Benning was trying to do in other recent trades and signings. Yes, Ferland and Leivo are both out as well which hurts a lot, but I think the idea and direction was the right one. One thing that does concern me is that we have yet another player we will have to make cap room for if we want to re-sign him. I have no idea where we are going to be getting that cap space, and now more than ever Benning better follow up on the fact he said he has a plan and is not concerned about the cap space.

Madden may turn out to be a beauty - and if so, this may turn out to be a costly trade... especially if he doesn't re-sign. On the flip side, I feel it shows our confidence in Gauds, as as such goves up an asset we really didn't need for a guy who can help us right now. I am mixed on the trade, but do feel TT will be good for our 2nd line.

Seattle Expansion Draft - Who do the Canucks protect?
kloubek replied to lukchin's topic in Canucks Talk
I agree that we could and should do this. -
All the experts talk about how good Hughes is at his offensive game, but what gets often overlooked is his defence. He uses his body *extremely* well, and that helps offset his diminutive size at least somewhat. He is also very young, and though he will never be a big guy in any context, he will likely get noticably stronger. This will allow him and his creativity to work his magic in tight better than he does now. Just something added to his arsenal down the road. What a gem, and easily the most talented defenseman we have ever had. This is been a good couple years for high end blueliners. If it wasn't so, there would be a ton of focus put on Quinn. That's a good thing. As I said several posts ago, time will tell how these guys all turn out, but at the end of the day, we got the guy WE needed.

[Proposal] Trade for Zach Bogosian
kloubek replied to clynch49's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I like the idea generally. Teams really do seem to get what they want here. But... Bogo doesn't score much - certainly nowhere near his draft position nor salary. He is merely OK defensively. Yes he is a big body but he doesn't really put it to proper use except in an enforcer role. Honestly, I see him as a slight to moderate improvement on Guddy. I could see him as depth for this year's run, and he is capable of eating minutes if need be, but nothing more. He just doesn't fill a role we need filling, imo. I would rather have Stecher from an on-ice talent and need perspective, and that's saying something because I don't think he has a particular role on this team either. Now, with that said, if we could unload Baer's last year, then great - but considering we would have to take on extra cap this season, I don't know if.it is even doable? -
[Proposal] Go get leadership + Grit for Playoff Run
kloubek replied to Outsiders's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm on board for both trades if it gets it done, but not any more. From our perspective, we draft so well that even our mid-rounders often hit. I'd hate to give those picks up, but I feel these trades do improve our team. The comment about Dillon's PIM is a good one... he is on pace this season for a huge increase over prior years. He would probably have to be controlled a little better, but I think Green is good for getting guys to buy in to the way he wants them to play. The thing about Dillon (and I made damn near the same proposal a month ago for this reason) is that he is actually a really good defensive player if you look at his corsi. This gives us another option not named Tanev to play a defensive game. On the event we DO lose Tanev to free agency, he would at least go a long ways to picking up that slack. Then of course there is his size and his hitting. We would basically be giving up a little scoring in Stecher to get a lot more size and tenacity, with what I believe is higher defensive prowess. And considering I imagine Stecher is gone anyway, it's really only that pick. Money well spent imo. -
Glad to hear about Motte. What he brings to the 4th line I feel is underrated by many. I'm worried about Boeser - physically and mentally. At least short term - I think he will be just fine overall once he gets past whatever is ailing him.

[Proposal] Gaudette for Ristolainen
kloubek replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Don't be fooled by his surface numbers guys. It's largely PP time. 5 on 5 this guy is defensively poor - even moreso when trying to contain the top opposition players. If he hasn't figured out how to keep pucks out of his own net by now, I fear he never will. Yes he gets points. They are good numbers, and they could even get higher if he came here, imo. But if you subtract the extra goals we would have against our already overwhelmed goalies, something is gonna give and it won't he pretty. Then there is his salary while.we are strapped. Plus his pending UFA when we need cap even more. I have no idea what Gaudette will become, but he shows really good promise and we would get a lot more for him if we wait. I am all for an upgrade on Stecher and using him as a sweetener to a deal, but I think this particular trade is the wrong target. -
Absolutely no to this. Dobson has shown very little past his high draft position. If he even develops into a decent NHLer, we would be on the hook for his development and subsequent roster spot. His future is unknown but I would be floored if he ever became a top pairing guy. Even if Jake stops improving, his current skillset is something that will most definitely help us going forward AND right now. Very high risk trade, imo.

That really sucks. Sit him for the rest of the season and send him back to Utica for a couple games prior to the playoffs. Guess we are going in on Simmonds after all...
