  1. Is either of Saros or Rinne so bad? Until this year, Rinne was still putting up acceptable numbers. This year with both doing poorly makes me think it has more to do with their team play rather than the goalies. But even if this is a consideration, I don't think Demko gets us the 9th. Schneider got the 10th and his numbers were stellar with a larger sample size. Still, if they were interested, I could see us adding some for that 9th.
  2. I would love to have a high end defensive prospect like him. So I do like such a target. I also see a good chance that between Pods and Hogs that we have an upcoming replacement on the horizon. It is just that in our team has good chemistry now, and shipping off Petey's good friend (and a really good guy in general) in my eyes should only be done if the return was pretty much guaranteed to make us better, and soon. I feel there is some real risk that Byram may not be all he was hyped up to be, and even if he does make it, I imagine we won't see him in the NHL for another 2-3 years. Then there is the point of Colorado's future cap issues, which is true enough. So basically, I don't really see it - though I really would he excited to see Byram in a Canucks sweater.
  3. Toronto obviously needs to bolster their blueline, but I just don't think they will give away their arguably best forward. As was suggested, I do see Nylander as being a better choice.
  4. Didn't watch last night I presume. Motte was injured and didn't come back, and Beagle was gone for a bit but returned.
  5. We were outplayed for most of the game. First two periods for certain. Good effort by SJ, but I think at the end of the day the Canucks just showed they were the better team. We had the better chances per shot, and better goaltending. (Though Jones can hardly be blamed for the loss. He wasn't particularly amazing, but stoning Petey twice is pretty hard to do). Great start to the road trip. Division is still tight - need to keep this going. Edmonton went to OT against the Flames so that wasn't ideal...
  6. On the surface, it does look like a tight squeeze. Choices may need to be made which team and fans alike may not be keen on. But the whole situation is very dynamic and can change very quickly. What if Raffery or Tyamkin actually could be an option? What if we made a trade or two to reduce the cap? What if we sign Markstrom and he is taken by Seattle? What if we manage to convince LE to hang up the skates or move on? Even just the latter would be enough to make a world of difference to our situation. All many are looking at is the lack of current cap space and the re-signings we hope to accomplish combined with future raises for our young guys. Rest assured that Benning is looking at the whole picture, has more information than us spectators do, and has a plan. Has anyone known Benning to be a bullsh***er? I find him refreshingly open and honest compared to many other GMs so when he says we will be ok, I am inclined to believe him.
  7. I actually agree with him that Quinn's game is more complete. Makar appears he might well end up the better offensive player. (Which is a scary thought considering how good Hughes is at driving play). He is also clearly the bigger of the two. But when it comes to defensive smarts, stats show Quinn is ahead, and I don't really see his small size as an issue; he mitigates his small size too by being almost untouchable out there, as well as an uncanny ability to position his body so well that he is often able to defend against guys far bigger than he is. It is still early to say, but I do think we might have gotten the better -overall- player. We may not, however, have gotten the best offensive player. That isn't at all a slight against Makar; both will get their accolades soon enough... they are just both going to be great in different ways.
  8. I just went over the first few pages of the thread again and people were very mixed. I wasn't sure myself, but once I did some research I was pretty stoked. Gotta love what Benning saw in young Petey. He's already fantastic, but he will be truly elite in 2-3 years with more experience and strength. I don't think I'm being a homer to think his point totals will almost certainly be top 10 in the NHL by then, and very possibly near the middle of that list depending on his linemates. And that's just points. The fact he will be that good while also being defensively smart speaks to how amazing overall he really is and will be. What a gem.
  9. Nobody thinks late-bloomer-Bailey belongs on a list? He is a good sized guy who can light it up in the AHL at least.
  10. Nobody thinks late-bloomer-Bailey belongs on a list? He is a good sized guy who can light it up in the AHL at least.
  11. Bailey is finally looking like a stud at the AHL level. Rafferty as well. If both can translate that success to the NHL, we are in -amazing- shape with our prospects considering we also have Madden, Pods, Hogs, Juolevi, and several B level prospects. We all knew the kind of prospect pool we had earlier with Hughes and Petey in the mix, but now that they have moved on we actually look even better in that regard as it pertains to the volume of good prospects. (Though I doubt any prospect in our system will become as good as either).
  12. One of the other great things about Tryamkin (and I am sure it has been said among all these pages) is that he can play either side - just like Hughes. That flexibility is gold when it comes to the d.
  13. Should be a good game, and a good test of our club against a very good and heavy Blues squad. If they pull off this win, I think it will jumpstart the momentum again after the break, and start the 2nd half of the season off with confidence.
  14. The initial stats support your claim. But if you consider the -quality- of shots (also stat supported) our goaltending is pretty darn good.
  15. By all rights, Huggie is still a boy. (A very talented boy). He is already all-star level. Get extra experience and a bit more strength behind him and I hear the Norris calling... provided Makar doesn't intercept that call. Same could be said of Pettersson's development and growth. Difference there is that with his frame, Petey will easily hit 190. Possibly close to 200. He will also be unstoppable at peak. Good times ahead.
  16. I want to see this team have role players on d. Guys who have a specific purpose but always maintain decent defensive acumen. Hughes: Drive play. Get points. Tanev: Shut down top lines. Support your partner who can score more. Tryamkin's role relies almost exclusively on his size and aggressive play. Play well defensively (in whatever style that works), but clear the crease and crash and bang. That's what he does, and does often. If not, there is really little reason to have him on the team. I think if you have role players who can play well defensively, it allows you to not rely on them being great in all areas but the coach can deploy them according to the play. Got a pp? Hughes goes out. Got big opposition forwards? Get Tryamkin out. Obviously, line matchups are what coaches do but when you have guys like Benn and Stecher (who are decent players) they are just... sort of... "there". They aren't your #1 go-to in any particular situation. This is why in particular I would be happy to have Tryamkin back over those two guys. He fills a role.
  17. - How Edmonton is still average with all those picks - Why are we still allowing coaches challenge to be used to see if a player was 2mm offside? Certain rules made with good intentions are being exploited for callbacks when ot had zero realistic bearing on the play.
  18. Always knew there was something off about that Gritty character.
  19. My thoughts: - Nice job by our Canuck boys. - Women's game yesterday was entertaining - Harder played game than most Allstar games I've watched. Was almost like a real game out there - People won't be pleased about Green Day F-bombs making it through - The electronic overlays were BRUTAL. I don't need to see simultaneous speed metrics, large name/number/team boxes dancing all over and covering up the stickwork, and I absolutely do not need or want those black (today changed to grey) streaks showing me where the puck/player was a two seconds ago. 25 years extra technology available, and I would sooner watch the way Fox used to do it. And that's saying something, because that was horrible.
  20. Do I really need to explain what Tryamkin brings to the table and how he could help win a playoff series? Have you not seen him manhandle guys who are typically known to be big, strong guys in the NHL? Even our biggest guys like Myers don't even compare. Yes he bolted. But I feel he has a greater understanding now of what he is getting into, and hopefully a new mentality and maturity. I will agree with you about Stecher. I actually like him, but for all the effort he puts in, he just isn't a difference maker.
  21. Yeah - maybe not. I wasn't really focused on Goldobin specifically, but moreso that kind of value of a player who hasn't quite put it together, or a mid level prospect.
  22. Benning says they have a plan. He has always been honest and upfront compared to many GMs and when he says this, I believe him. Would it be nice to move out dead cap hits? Absolutely. But if Jim is indeed being up front, it shouldn't come at a cost any higher than surplus players and b level prospects.
  23. Wouldn't give Pearson. He has found his groove with Bo, and imagine how Bo would feel if we shipped out the first consistent linemate he's had. No to Tryamkin either. We just can't walk away from the kind of guy who will make the opponent of a playoff series hate their lives. Buchnevich has a lot of talent, no doubt. But so does Goldobin and we all know how that is going. Can we afford to have a player who decides when he wants to show up for a game? Would that hurt our chemistry? CAN Green get him going like he finally got through to Jake? Will NY let him go for a reasonable price? If Benning thinks so then go for it. We just need to ship out a bit of salary. Really if you look at it, we MAY already have another top 6 guy coming next year in Hoglander. I am not suggesting we rely on that, but our need for another top 6 winger may not extend past this season. Just sayin'.
  24. I feel Dillon is an upgrade to Benn, and apparently he has really come into his own defensively. I've read a few articles which bring up some pretty good deep numbers. He seems to pass the eye test too. My thought process again is to have a second guy who can be the 2nd best defender behind Tanev. I know Tanev is having a great season, but if he goes down we are going to be hurting for such a guy in a big way. Benn is not that guy, imo. It also helps the PK. Both Oscar and Benn have had spurts where they look decent, but overall I haven't been impressed. Dillon may bring a few more points, speed, and better hitting/size. I am not saying he would make a *huge* difference, but I think he would be an improvement without giving up much at all. I am hoping we get Tryamkin back, but even if we do I don't think that makes a guy like Dillon redundant. It just adds to our already big team. Benning has cited St. Louis as being effective due largely to their size and I agree - so the more the merrier. Given my lineup suggestion for next year, I think it works. Pairing a defensive player with a more scoring d-man on all 3 pairings. Isn't that ideal? As for wanting to give a couple guys on Utica a shot - that's fair. But I think we can still do that via injury fill-in which is inevitable. Oscar was only signed for 1 season. This all also makes Stecher a trade asset. I like him, but let's face it... he is ok at everything, but not exactly great at anything. He gets by making smart plays and high effort, but he isn't going to make our team tougher to play against. To me, that brute of a d in my second year suggestion would do exactly that. Also keep in mind that the Myers contract was structured as an attractive option for the ED. We may very well lose him, and if so that too opens up opportunity for a Utica player as well as making size an even more important aspect of the remaining d.
  25. If this would get it done, I am all for it. This guy is playoff material. We do have a glut of forwards, as mentioned. Especially with Eriksson looking like he is doing something now and with Ferland coming back. Still, playoff depth and injury coverage is a must and Schaller can easily sit. Is Tryamkin available to come back for the end of THIS season? If so, I feel he would be an overall upgrade over Stecher in a playoff environment anyway.
