  1. Saw today that Sportsnet was talking about who we should target, and Brenden Dillon was a name that came up. Crash course on Dillon: He's a big guy (225?) with decent speed, and is largely used as a defensive compliment to EK... much like we currently utilize Tanev with Hughes. While I don't think he would be quite as good defensively, he brings more size to the lineup at a lower cost. He is injury resistant and is a BC boy. Dillon's is UFA at end of season, but one would guess he might not be too keen to re-sign with a team that badly needs a rebuild. While there are no guarantees he would re-up with us, I feel there is a good chance he will given our team trajectory, culture, and the fact he grew up cheering the Canucks. Sure we could go after him in the offseason, but I am confident if we give him a taste of this team now we have the best chance of him staying. I can't imagine he would be too expensive given his UFA status. Trade them Benn (He becomes redundant), and Goldobin maybe? Goldy is RFA so they can likely re-sign him cheap. If that isn't enough return for them we could throw in a very late draft pick. This also gives us another option should we need to let Tanev walk due to injuries and cap issues. Defensive lines become: Edler Stecher Hughes Tanev Dillon Myers Oscar Next season, it COULD could be: Edler Tanev Dillon Hughes Tryamkin Myers Thoughts?
  2. Nope. Boeser is great friends with Petey, a classy and character guy, and is a ppg player. Why would we downgrade for a lesser player and prospect who might not even make it to the NHL? While I am sure Boeser has excellent trade value, I consider him almost untouchable.
  3. I'm super happy we are in 1st, but with such a tight race, games will get harder. All teams that are within a point of us are good enough to get in, so there will be a couple of good teams that just don't quite make it. My son asked me today if I thought the Canucks will make the playoffs. I said at the start of the season and still believe we will. But that might just ve homerism talking... My take: Edmonton collapses and doesn't make it. Though I live in Calgary, I am not sure this team makes it either. I think there is opportunity for us to squeak in - either that, or we prove more resiliency than I expect and we surge in the 2nd half. Lets go Canucks!
  4. Nope. It's the ring of Honour. There is nothing honourable about how he forced the team to send him to the Ducks. I can appreciate his desire to win and not wanting to go through a rebuild, but he insisted we set him up exactly like he wanted at the expense of the team. If he had simply requested a trade behind closed doors and allowed us send him where we could get the best return, I would have no problem with it. But history is history, and it cannot be rewritten by eventual reflection.
  5. Perhaps, but with so many teams against the cap and with his actual save % and gaa being what they are, I am not sure there will be as many takers as you think. His basic stats don't really back up such a contract, and I am hoping that fact allows us to use such comparables to talk down the price. Even if we did sign him for that range, and there really would be so many takers, if we don't offer him a no trade clause then he is still a tradable asset. I haven't heard too much about Marky's desire to stay in Vancouver, but I can only hope he recognizes that this team spent nearly 6 years developing him to this point and let's be honest - we have only seen this level of play for about a year total. We have placed our faith in him and provided him a stable place to play, and I am hoping his first desire is not to up and jump ship to get the highest dollar. But if that is his intent, not much we can do about it. We can only pay so much.
  6. If only there was a Loui thread already running since his signing that we could comment in...
  7. Lol "Oscar Myers". Seriously though... That looks like a mean lineup overall. The two lightest guys in that lineup play far bigger than their size suggests too. We could be adding Tryamkin to that mix as well, and I do believe Ferland will be in there somehow. I think that basically makes us the biggest team in the league. It has to. I pity the team(s) that would play against us in the post-season. Even as the team sits as it is...
  8. If the Wild expect a return appropriate for a 50 point Dumba, they are dreaming. He hasn't shown well this season at all, so any acquiring GM needs to assume risk he won't fully recover from his operation. That's some risk - considering the 6m salary especially. While he is a great player historically, this question mark ought to bring his price to reasonable levels. Blockbuster, IF Dumba is expected by our doctors to heal up: Dumba, Foligno, Dubnyk For Eriksson, Demko, Beagle, Stecher, Baer, Lind, a middling prospect, 3rd and 4th round pick. Why we do this: Obvious cap dumping. Dubnyk might have a resurgence and if not he is only due one more season. Either way, should be a capable backup. We no longer have goalie issues with the ED. Foligno is a guy who would fit right into this lineup with the way he plays, and improves our shutdown and penalty killing ability, and adds even more size and tenacity. Say Dumba gets back to form: He gives us about 4-5 times the production we can expect from Stecher. We get a lot tougher on the backend too. Why Wild do this: They take on dead cap while paying Loui next to nothing if he chooses to continue his contract. First and foremost, they get their goalie of the future (I don't believe they have good prospects). Plus they get a couple prospects and a couple picks to start their rebuild.
  9. Edler played a great game. I don't understand why he doesn't use that hitting ability more often. Potential injury?
  10. Me too. There will always be the critics who maintain his talent level will never match the draft position. (They may still well be right). But given that it isn't uncommon to have high draft picks not work out, I always knew Jake would end up a strong part of this team given his size and speed. With that said, I expected a 3rd liner and it looks like we might be getting much more. Not bad for a draft "bust".
  11. I was always supportive of the signing and still am. He has always been a streaky scorer, but he has enough talent to be a threat. So much so that he is a viable 2nd line option in a pinch. More obviously, however, is the way he plays. Hard and gritty, as mentioned above. We have a big group of guys and I feel their size and playing style translates well to playing playoff series hockey.
  12. Maybe so, but I don't think Loui does anything to make the line heavier. His only saving grace is the smarts to read the play and position himself well. I'm glad Loui is playing better and with more confidence and drive. But I don't think for a second he is the long term answer there. As nice as it is to have our 6 million dollar player playing like a 3 million dollar player instead of a plug, I feel this should be an opportunity to try to raise his value to net zero in attempt to trade him to a rebuilding team with extra cap and the desire to get a prospect as a sweetener. Lets not forget LE's very reasonable real cash cost after his bonus. If I was a GM in such a position, I see that as great value.
  13. As everyone has noticed, Jake has matured and is starting to play the game like he can. More than anything, I love seeing his newfound dedication and contrary to what I thought was possible, he actually seems to be thinking the game quicker and better than in the past - which is what I believe to be the main reason for his improvement. But what I really posted to say is that I am so glad the Canucks remained patient with him. I'm sure that was really hard and frustrating to do, but they saw enough potential in Jakes skills to see it through. In a way, it is almost better for us he took so long to develop. This delays having to pay him the big bucks in his upcoming contract. If we can snag him for 2-3 years at a low cap hit then he may end up one of the best value contracts we have during our rise to contenders.
  14. My thoughts exactly. Schaller is totally expendable so there is one spot easily opened there. Combined with inevitable injuries, we will probably be just fine. As for shutting Ferland down, I am fine with delaying his return just to be sure and get him back into game shape, but I am sure we will see him back soon enough as these games get harder and we get closer to solidifying a playoff spot.
  15. I feel Green has got us here, and it is fair to see what he can do with our team now that it has the talent to compete. Let's not forget where we were last season compared to now. We look like a totally more competitive team. I feel Green has the team on the same page, and playing hard hockey almost every game. I feel he is good for development, and let's be realistic - we have many core pieces who are still developing. The only area I feel we can truly be better is defensively, but that is especially hard when the team plays an aggressive, pinch-in style. Our power play is very good (though not so much lately), and we are scoring goals. What more do you want? Is Green the best during post game interviews? Not so much. But he is honest, and calls it as he feels. I feel at the LEAST to give him the rest of the season. Even if he were to be fired, now is not the time.
  16. Sutter actually had a good game for his return. Nice to see him back - our 4th line needs him.
  17. Entertaining game. The 1st wasn't the finest, but the boys worked hard in the 2nd and 3rd, and it gave us the win. Good game overall - but really could have gone either way.
  18. Yeah, I read in passing he has been doing much better, but honestly didn't take the time to read in full and should have. Guess he needed to find his fit - though there are still plenty of things he does that drives me crazy - like bad passes, ill-timed and telegraphed passes, slow puck movement and common lack of physical play even close to what he is capable of. (Though to be fair, inconsistent physical play has always been his trademark). Still, if he can keep up the points that will go a long way. As for Benn, I partially agree. You are right - he had a career year in Montreal, and expecting that from him while coming into a new team and system may be unrealistic. With that said, despite a solid start he is still on pace for the lowest ppg since his rookie season - which is unacceptable to me in a system where he is given a leash to pinch in and contribute. Like you said - it's other elements of his game that aren't keeping up either... contributing towards a pretty disappointing season imo. That's why I figured Tryamkin would be a better replacement. He too isn't exactly a scoring machine, but he should at least keep up to Benn's pace, and has a much better reach to get in the middle of things. IMO, big hits from Tryamkin on key players and the overall intimidation factor in general can totally change the complexion of a series. Are Benn (or Fantenberg for that matter) capable of actually changing a game? I don't really see it. Based on what I have seen this season, they are both typically solid nhl-level but depth guys who are awesome to have for filling in when we inevitably sustain injury, but that's about it.
  19. If Benn and Myers managed to bring the scoring we were hoping for, our D would be noticably more potent. To me, both have been a big disappointment. I honestly haven't seen Benn bring us anything that Tryamkin can't bring even more of.
  20. I think the thing is that once the player has gone through protocol and is cleared to play, isn't generally accepted that further healing may or may not occur and/or be required? Isn't that the whole meaning of being cleared in today's concussion-conscious NHL? Team nor player tend to want a prolonged absence, so the player almost always comes back when cleared unless symptoms reoccur. IF it is deemed reasonable that he will build resistance to further concussions in the future if he rests once cleared then I am all for it. But really, it is up to him. At most, some 15 games before playoffs seems like a good time to bring him back. Time to get back to top form in time for our playoff run. I think we really need Ferland (and Tryamkin if at all possible) to give us the extra punch in a playoff environment. With those two additions, I think the team could impose themselves quite well against most other teams. I still believe that crushing hits is totally a way to make an opposing team shrivel away. We all know what LA did to us in the 1st rd. Or Boston before that. Even St. Louis is a model of how important guys like Ferland in the lineup. I don't want him to risk his future to play whatsoever, but if he is cleared to play and wants to play, let him play.
  21. We need to take advantage of a floundering Buffalo squad. The boys should be hungry after 2 bad losses. Mind you, they should have been hungry against Florida too. I predict 5-1 Canucks. Please make it so, guys.
  22. I don't really mind the idea of giving up assets to move out cap as long as it properly bolsters our top 6 to where they need to be and are on long enough contracts or at least restricted. Myers can take off with his 6m salary as far as I am concerned. Tryamkin brings even more size and better checking, with likely a minor scoring reduction from what we've seen of Myers so far. As far as I can see it, we really only need 1 more top 6 player, assuming we plan to keep Ferland on the 3rd. I may not agree with the specifics from the OP, but I do feel we can afford to give up some to get that new, legit top 6 player. I also feel including Demko as an outgoing asset is a good idea given the expansion draft. I also like the idea of getting Bertuzzzi II, but the price would be steep. I can see Detroit wanting a new goalie prospect though, and Podkolzin fits into their ability to wait a couple of years. I know some here love the guy but somehow I just see Hoglander fitting in better on our top line. That puts Miller and Bert with Bo, who I think would work well together.
  23. I dunno. He just doesn't pass my eye test. He doesn't seem that strong defensively, doesn't often check like he can, makes slow and low reward offensive plays, and telegraphs his passes worse than any other Canuck imo. Not saying he is a horrible defenseman overall, but rather just that he is worth half his salary as far as I am concerned.
  24. He has certainly looked better of late. Still makes some weak plays and is hardly dynamic, but he is at least out there making some plays now. Still eats up WAY too much cap when we are going to need it soon.
  25. To me, this effort was just as bad as our 9-2 Lightning game. 5-2 makes it appear as if we actually competed. Very disappointing game. Ridiculous turnovers, lazy and bad defensive play killed us once again. I also don't understand why Myers gets so much ice time - he is typically awful imo. I know he got his assist tonight, but he typically doesn't contribute much offensively, makes bonehead defensive plays, is lazy on the puck, doesn't often his as his size would suggest, and telegraphs his passes so much he might as well yell out to the opposing team where they are going first. 3 million d-man? Sure. 4? Maybe if we are being generous. 6? No way.
