  1. sending a player through waivers is giving him away for free. the canucks have done that twice and no team wanted them, for free. taking a salary back that the other team doesn't want is PAYING to have someone take your players.
  2. the repeated trips through waivers and the fact that benning has been trying to find a home for goldy and baer since training camp.
  3. the canucks may currently have the best top 6 (when healthy) they ever have -- and more importantly, the most playoff-built. miller, horvat, pearson, toffoli, and virtanen in the top 6. that's a lot of heavy, grinding, straight line players. plus roussel, sutter, beagle, motte, macewen throughout the rest of the forward group. if the canucks lose in the first round, the team that beats them will be ground chuck.
  4. how are you going to turn liabilities that you haven't been able to give away for free all year into an upgrade at the league's most valuable position?
  5. suddenly markstrom is a vezina frontrunner and in the hart conversation? wowza.
  6. girlfriend upon seeing willie nylander for the first time in that montage video: "who's this ----in' loser?"
  7. fun fact of the day: the canucks 5th leading scorer (quinn hughes) currently has 1 more point than shawn matthias had in his final 3 nhl seasons combined.

    SEDIN WEEK

I had already forgotten Sam Gagner was once a canuck before watching that clip
  9. I hated kes when he was a canuck, basically from the first time I heard him speak. I don't want him in the ring of honour, even though I've softened a bit on it recently. but there's a time and a place for everything, and tonight is definitely not the time to boo anybody. I genuinely hope kesler gets a huge ovation (and honestly, I think he'll get the biggest one that isn't reserved for the sedins) -- the guy did enough as a canuck to deserve some kind of happy ending, and moreover, that 2011 era team deserves to be honoured one last time.
  10. ... does his girlfriend really count, though?
  11. because benning and his staff don't make roster decisions by looking at stats on hockeydb. he has commented that rafferty still needs to work on his defensive zone play quite a bit, and the group (benning, rj, cull, green) have decided brisebois was the option. a tiny little 10x bump in pay ... besides, practicing with NHLers for a week or 3 means more to a young player's development than playing another 5 ahl games.
  12. it's not about a system though, it's about human nature. if guys feel confident that they have a brick wall behind them, they're going to feel more confident taking risks. likewise, if a goalie is looking or has been been shaky, guys will instinctively play with more caution. moreover, it's just a couple of reminders in practice, reminding guys about their details, but letting them have the freedom otherwise. systems, analytics, blah blah blah, it's all so hugely overblown. we're talking about humans playing a game that they're the best in the world at. edit: the larger point I'm trying to make, though, is that analytics inherently say, "ok, if everything is the same except we change this, then THAT will happen" when in reality, there's no such thing as changing only one variable; if you change one thing, everything else changes with it. using analytics as a predictor of future results is foolhardy unless circumstances remain static.
  13. the problem, though, is that everything is fluid and interconnected. you say that if the canucks had average or subpar goaltending, they'd be losing; I say that if the canucks were having average or subpar goaltending, the rest of the team would be focused on playing a tighter defensive game to compensate. that's why analytics are pretty dumb. ithey forget that we're dealing with dynamic human beings and not static videogame characters.
  14. while that's true, the number was 1 point separating those 5 teams about a week ago, and if the canucks win their games in hand, they're at least 6 points clear of calgary, 7 points clear of vegas and 9 points clear of arizona. this team can pull away in a hurry.
  15. rough season, career season ... tomato, tomahto ...
  16. why this thread is dumb in a nutshell.
  17. furthermore, I feel like the demeanor and snarl backes brings to the dressing room would be a more significant and impactful influence than what loui brings off the ice. I feel like backes on the 4th line in playoffs could be a difference maker.
  18. for me it breaks down as: -loui has finally started to show a bit the last month, so you're trading him for a likely less productive player (although who knows what backes looks like with a change of scenery, especially if made to feel important and given a role) -both players are strong defensively, though loui gets the edge because he can still skate alright -backes brings toughness and jam and can throw down with basically anyone in the league if necessary (though he may not win) -backes has the more palatable contract I feel like the only way the canucks don't have to add in the deal, simply because the extra year of bad contract outweighs the slight increase in usefulness, is if boston's familiarity with eriksson convinces them they can get more out of him.
  19. if a deal was hypothetically possible to flip eriksson for backes, would you do it, assuming it didn't cost a significant asset?
  20. very different roles, though. I suspect they're discussing shorter term because they've groomed him and don't want to lose him, but also acknowledge that he's ready to spread his wings and fly. it's a sort of "give us a couple more years and we'll either find an increased role for you or let you pursue other opportunities."
  21. it's just an example of a sensationalist presentation of mundane stats in order to make it appear more shocking and click-baity. the internet in a nutshell. edit: "did you know that almost 100% of farmers are adding huge amounts of dihydrogen monoxide, a potentially dangerous chemical, to the food you and your family eat?!"
