let's imagine for a second that your employer was based out of nyc, but they have you stationed in good ol' vernon, bc. you're a pretty important guy, and in your role your employer needs to periodically recall you to home base (or other points on the map) on extremely short notice (hours, not days). unfortunately, that means you have to drive an hour from vernon to kamloops and hop on a regional flight from there to vancouver. at that point you can get on a connecting flight across the continent -- at least after you've gone through customs.
