[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland
tas replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
the plan hasn't changed. the plan, from the very first press conference, was to build a new group with a new core drafted and developed by the team, while at the same time supporting that group with enough veterans to allow for a competitive atmosphere, rather than succumbing to a losing culture like the oilers. it's like steering a ship -- sometimes you get blown off course, but that doesn't mean the path or destination has changed. you just correct as necessary. desjardins wasn't moving the group in the direction they expected, so they corrected the course. as far as linden goes, the only thing that changed that part of the "plan" is that the teams drafting was good enough that benning and aquilini believed it was time to accelerate things, making the youth front and center and removing the training wheels, whereas linden was determined to see the slow cooker method through. -

tas replied to dpn1's topic in Canucks Talk
people on this forum fetishise any oversized galoot in the ahl who puts up even moderate offense. macewen, archibald, grenier, mancari ... -
sorry, but this is a huge swing and a miss.

more aggressive, harder working players are more likely to keep their feet moving, thus making it less likely they'll end up taking cheesey little stick infraction penalties while also making it more likely that they'll draw them. you don't see a lot of roughing/elbowing/boarding/charging penalties being called around the league, and those are the ones you'd expect rough and tumble players to take. the one that kill teams are hooking/tripping/holding/high sticking and those normally come from players not moving their feet and waving their sticks at guys. -
[Rumor] Boeser Camp Eyeing 4 Year Deal Worth $28M
tas replied to buddyguy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
by writing up a contract and having him sign it. boeser will be signed. it's not an issue. if it was an issue, other moves wouldn't have been made. benning didn't sign ferland and then go, "oh, $&!#, right! I forgot we still had to sign brock! uh oh!" -
phil the thrill puts butts in seats ... apparently ...

does anybody have an educated guess on when we can expect updated merch with the new branding? I'm in the market for a new hat, but I want to hold off to see what the new line looks like.

[Rumour] Laine in "deep talks" with Montreal
tas replied to Baer.'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
putting pucks in the net consistently is the most difficult thing in hockey, and thus the most coveted asset. the stanley cup isn't awarded to the team with the best corsi, it's given to the team that outscores their opponent more often than the opposite. you can get battle and compete for $900k throughout the bottom half of your lineup. -
the first 1:14 plays over a video montage with slow building intensity. players come out at 1:15 and the next 20 seconds loop.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a looped version of the intro to lateralus by tool.

he's averaged 37 goals per year over his first 3 years in the league. you lock that up with term and money. -

you just described brett hull. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Josh Leivo
tas replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
league minimum isn't 4th line pay though, that's ahl call-up pay, which is what he was in toronto. in vancouver he's pencilled into the opening night roster. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Tyler Motte
tas replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I could definitely see him being the alex burrows type of grinding role player on an offensive line. -
[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks
tas replied to CanucksCountry's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I honestly don't care if he gets 25 points or 5 points -- scoring isn't why he was brought in. -

0.37 ppg over 49 games with the canucks. 0.33 ppg over 84 games (parts of 6 seasons) with the leafs. -

he provides 3rd line production and performance at a 4th line price. it's not an overpayment by any measure. -

or maybe it means they're just holding down the fort and waiting for a new CBA when the salary cap starts going up substantially again. -

so are the canucks giving up picks to offload these players, or receiving picks for them in return like you said in the post that I quoted? -

what evidence do you have that he's NOT looking to move them? in fact, sekeres reported recently that schaller's agent was exploring other opportunities. moving bad players signed to contracts isn't easy. as a general rule of thumb, if a clueless fan is smart enough to not want a player on the team, do you really think the other 30 GM's in the league are going to want them? give me a break, man. -

so far, edler, benn, motte, and now leivo have all signed contracts with the canucks that are virtually identical to the ones that I gave them on capfriendly's armchair gm tool early in the offseason. now we just need boeser to sign 6 years x $7.25 mil and my plan will be complete. -
[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
tas replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I honestly feel that having a cheap shot artist (marchand, kadri, etc) is a better deterrent than having an enforcer. enforcers that follow "the code" aren't a deterrent because players can take liberties and then skate away. they don't have to drop the gloves if they don't want to. if, however, the opposing team has a player that is willing to cross the line with dirty, illegal, dangerous plays, guys are going to think twice simply out of self preservation. -
the veteran presence isn't really about results on the stat sheet, it's about establishing work habits in practice and the gym and guiding young celebrity millionaire jocks to be professionals away from the arena as well. you can tell the young guys on the team revere edler by the way they talk about him. it's impossible to know for sure the dynamics behind the scenes, but there's a lot more to it than in-game performance.
