Brian Burke on changing the Draft Lottery Format
timberz21 replied to Generational.EP40's topic in General Hockey Discussion
His arguments are kind of contradictory. First he says, worst teams pick the best players. Then he says, if your the worst teams a few years in a row, then you not allowed to get the best players? Well that's not fair either....McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin dont come around every year. New Jersey won the lottery when it was Hischier/Patrick. That was one of the worst top 2 overall prospect in the past decade. Therefore, since all draft class are not equal....it wouldn't be fair for a team to get 1st overall on a bad year and be denied 1st overall when McDavid or Matthews shows up. Everything about the NHL, playoffs format, schedule, cap ceiling, cap floor, is design to bring parity around the league. Rich teams are prevented from spending crazy money to "buy" a championship like the Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers can do. With this new lottery that's the only rules that goes against parity. Meanings, the worst teams won't necessarily get the best pick/player. The past lottery gave more chances to bad teams to get 1st overall and the Oilers benefitted from that. Yes, the Devils now won the lottery twice, but the odds are made to that's its much more random than it used to be. I'm pretty pissed how bad luck the Canucks had the past few years, but I prefer this method anyways. Heck, if the Canucks had won the lottery in the 2017 draft, they would have probably picked Hischier or Patrick instead of Pettersson. -
[Proposal] Canucks & Sens
timberz21 replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I don't remember the stats exactly, but players drafted after 20th overall chances of playing more than 100 games in the NHL drop significantly. I think in the early 2nd round it drop to less than 10%. Therefore, the only reason to move from 10 to 19, is if Benning think he found a gem that he really likes and is ranked outside the top 20. Usually, there is a significant drop in talent after the top 10, so I see no reason to drop 9 spot only to add an early 2nd. Usually, the cost of moving 3-4 spots in the 20-31 range is a 2nd rounder. Therefore, if we are moving 9 spots back, I want way more than a 2nd and Abramov. I'd want at least 2 top 25 picks. Still i'd rather pick quality at 10 than quantity. -
IMO Risto > Demko, Hutton and Leivo 7th > 10th Not sure why Buffalo would do this
-
If that were true, we would keep them in our quest to make the team better. Unfortunately, they are not, they are spare parts.
-
Value-wise, that's probably close...but the reason 1st overall are never traded is because, both teams would reject that trade, even if value is spot on. Only reasons to acquire 1st overall, would be to massively overpay, like adding 2020 and 2021, 1st rounders to that deal.

[Discussion] Making a deal with the Devil!
timberz21 replied to SuperJr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
You don't see the irony here don't you? They need offense and they trade Jack Hughes (or Kakko)????? How does that make any sense. They probably have 2-3 Kole Lind in their system already, they can find a Baertschi anytime in free agency. Jack Hughes type of player don't come around often. Anyway this thread is pointless. Everyone here will trade anything not named Bo, Boeser, EP. Well, guess what...the Devils won't trade Jack Hughes for anything not name Bo, Boeser or EP....and possibly adding the 10th overall on top of that. /end of discussion. -
I think the race will be closer than everyone thought, but ultimately I think Petey still wins. Yes Binnington has been a big contributor to St-Louis turn around...but i still think the team in general is playing better.. This is not the Hart trophy, it's the Calder, so ultimately I think Petey wins. EDIT: Ultimately, it will depends on the Vezina also. If Binnington is in the Vezina conversation, then he should also be in the Calder conversation. But I think, in both voting, the number of games played will hurt him.

HQ ... because he's setting his office on the top floor of this defense for a longtime

Usually, this is not a pending UFA-friendly tournament, I doubt he goes.
-
Like seriously...You either keep him or fire him, you can't have it both ways. You either have confidence in someone or you don't, Its leadership 101, you cant tell someone we really like your drafting so we are going to demote you to another role and hire someone else to do the rest of the job. Now the new guys has work with the guy he replaced? And the guy that got demoted is suppose to be excited and happy to go to work? Think about it, like come on. The only way coaches and gms stick around an organization is because they want to get paid and are given menial job during the remainder of their contract, for the sake of it.

Meh, maybe in theory. A lot of players are retained by their NHL teams, meaning they clearly view them as more beneficial to stick in the NHL than to be loaned. Also, the different style of WHJC and the NHL confuses players IMO. Yes the IIHF probably likes to have more headliners at the tournament, but at the same time, it's usually stacked with future superstar anyways. As, for National Team, do you prefer more experienced players yes...but at the same time, loaned players rarely dominates the tournament (real good ones stick in the NHL). IMO chemistry and team spirit usually wins the tournament and with the uncertainty and the waiting game, it affects the team building. Just my two cents.

I like your idea...each NHL team could have 1 AHL exemption every year, to allow for an under age player to go in the AHL. Especially since more and more team are keeping 19 years old longer than the 10 games maximum to burn 1 year off the ELC, anyways, Off subject but, I would also ban NHL players to be loan to the WHJC. If you exceed your 10 games maximum for ELC, you are not eligible for WHJC. I think it is a gong show every year, Will he go or not? Anyways most of the time it's a NO and NHL wait until the last minute to make their decision. WHJC teams already have limited training time to get their chemistry together, why create more confusion and uncertainty.

[Rumor] Panarin Interested in Vancouver
timberz21 replied to SuitnTie's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think this is probably more like a calculated leak from his agent or his team. Panarin will be one of the most coveted free agent this summer and it was reported that Panarin had specific cities in mind. Now if there is not enough bidder, not ideal to create a bidding war....so his agent is trying to sell the false hope that Panarin might be interested to join two big Canadian markets to drive up the price without having intention of ever signing there. He knows Vancouver has a lot of cap space and with the higher income taxes would have to bid a touch more than the others...hence driving up the prices. Just my theory. -
Enough with the EP chemistry. Geez, these guys haven't played together in like 3+ years. They are not the same player they were. Their chemistry was from a completely whole different setting than the NHL. EP is an NHL star....Dahlen is an AHL decent player. He had so much to prove before he would even get a sniff of playing on a line with EP.

[Trade] MIN Granlund - NSH Fiala
timberz21 replied to Mathew Barzal's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Kevin Fiala to Minnesota Mikael Grandlund to Nashville -
That's always going to be the dilemma, when do you quit on your prospect. People always remembers the Neely's, but for every Neely, there are probably a 100+ that ended being bust. It begs the question, are you better holding on to every prospect until they have no more value and avoid giving away a Neely, or do you recognize the potential bust early and cut yours losses and try getting something significant in return while it's not too late, while maybe losing a Neely.

LOL, one exception makes it a rule? Also, Muzzin was a 5th rounder, he was always a long shot and had to take the long road, not the case for Juolevi. If we follow your logic, we better start loading up on 6th/7th rounder....you know... because in 1998 Datsyuk was selected in the 6th round and in 1999 it was Zetterberg in the 7th. Not saying Juolevi is a bust or not, but if your hope for him not being a bust hangs on Muzzin's example...maybe he is a bust.

With all the respect to Dubas, I'm pretty sure it's more Babcock's hockey than Dubas. Not trying to say that Babcock is running the show and young Dubas is just a pawn, but Babcock's known to be one of the best coach and have been around longer than Dubas. So IMO, Babcock is telling Dubas what kind of style he want to play and what kind of player he needs and Dubas then goes to work. I think it works like that for a lot of teams too, you can't push players that won't work with the coaching style.

[Discussion] Trade Matthews
timberz21 replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah, make an investment in Tavares, but trade Matthews after...that's the way to go Toronto might be deeper with these trades, but that won't guarantee them a cup in the short term. By trading Matthews their shorten their Stanley Cup windows to a few years only. If they keep him, they should be contenders for the next 7-10 years. Ask yourself, in a year or two, would you trade EP for these packages (or at all)? Same answer for Toronto. -
...let me think... gold U-18, gold U-20, gold WC, CHL player of the team, U-18 MVP, U-20 All start, Art Ross (x2), Hart, Ted Lindsay. Ok he hasn't won the cup yet, he's been in the league 3 years, did Crosby won a cup in his first 3 years??? Come on, I know we're suppose to hate the Oilers, but that doesn't mean with need to be stupid and biased.

It's just funny that our most injury proned players are usually our big and/or tough guys...Guddy, Sutter, Salo, Edler, Dorsett, while our supposedly "soft" players like the Sedins basically went their whole career without a serious injury (except for Daniel's concussion due to a dirty play)
