[Official] 2021 Training Camp Thread

I think really think once Jack gets any first camp jitters out of the way, he is better than OJ right now. I think Jack has the mobility to outskate his mistakes somewhat. Still don’t see that with OJ...though I admit that might not be fair based upon the few clips I’ve seen. Gawd, wish I was at camp giving y’all first hand reports. -
Yep. It’s as though seeing that Petey won’t magically become that 190lb specimen they were hoping for some folks now want to fantasize about Podz becoming our own 6’4” Ivan Drago. I think 6’1” is likely which is plenty big, plenty strong.

Could happen, and part of me certainly hopes it happens because young talent is exciting and brings with it a lot of hope. But I remember hearing things about his game coming out of Sweden in terms of his play away from the puck...that it needed work....and we know Green is a stickler for that part of the game. I’m guessing the Canucks would have to be quite convinced that he’d contribute quite a bit offensively to stick here. His numbers out of Sweden don’t suggest an elite offensive game is there right now. But then again, perhaps that will be unlocked with some high quality NHL line mates. Will be fun to follow for sure. -

To Podz from us, Canucknation: We await your arrival with great optimism. -
Podz is doing what he can, but Russia just got blitzed that period. This Russian goalie could benefit from some Ian Clark tutelage. Yikes. I hope Russia, led by their captain, can make a game of it in the 2nd stanza.

Quinn looks noticeably more muscular this year...deltoids, biceps and pecs showing nice definition. I fully realize that these comments might come across as creepy. -

I really need to head over to my local Safeway for a grocery run....but I’m having a hard time peeling myself away from this thread. Damn y’all for posting all these training camp vids and stories! But also, bless you! Aw crap, I better go and get it done. I expect to see a ton more stuff when I return though! -

Petey really is a hardgainer ain’t he? People convinced he is going to show up at camp suddenly bigger might have to rethink that. LOVE the fact that Hoglander is being an opportunity to impress with some good players...even in practice. Travis Green puts fitness and dedication to hockey craft really high and Hog certainly fits the bill from everything we have heard about him. Jake looks a bit leaner in the face than he did last year from my recollection. Going to guess he is not the 228 pounds he was at last seasons camp. Even in the short clips Rathbone really impresses. I see the number 3 and instantly think Bieksa...then I’m like, Kevin didn’t skate like THAT. These are my thoughts for now. -

I hear you on this...I’ll miss attending it this year as well. But short of Dr. Bonnie escorting us into Rogers Arena personally, I’d say we’re both s*** out of luck. -

Keep posting these vids, from wherever they appear folks. World Juniors has helped to fill the hockey void for many of us...but nothing compares to seeing our home team in action. At least for me. Huge thanks. -

Gotta be numbers from last year, and they are probably just porting over numbers from the Golden Knights and Flames for Schmidt and Hamonic, respectively. Just a quick glance shows no Rathbone, EP still pretty light....Jake, uh...not so much. -
I would think we should hear something in regards to this today. I recall him reporting to camp at around 218 pounds last time. I’d like to see a number around 205.

Pre-pandemic, especially once I retired back in 2014, I basically never missed attending Training Camp in person. Enjoyed reporting my impressions on this forum. I’ll definitely miss going this year. I wonder if the Canucks ever thought about doing a live stream of the practices and scrimmages. I’d sure as heck watch a bunch of it. Really want to see how Juolevi looks. I love the optimism many folks have for him this year....but, slightly jaded oldster that I am I really need to SEE IT before I get too excited. His playoff appearance (albeit highly sheltered minutes) was promising....almost tantalizing. If he finds just a half a gear more in his skating....I’ve no doubt we’ve got something special with him. Rathbone as well. Two young, elite skating d-men is something I don’t ever recall the Canucks having. From what I’ve seen of Jack, he’s more straight line locomotive power to Quinn’s skate edge artistry. Booming shot from the point. Not sure on it’s perceived accuracy. I think if he goes to Utica (probably likely) he won’t be there too long. Then there’s a (hopefully) fitter Virtanen, and (hopefully) stronger versions of Hughes and Petey. LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOO! -

Jimbo tapping into his poetic side with the “circle of life” drop. Nothing earth shattering during the call, but exciting to hear some hockey talk from the top brass. -

Here we go.... -
Not to get things too off-topic here....but I’m incredibly interested to see what an extremely well conditioned Virtanen looks like on the ice. This very well could be Tyler Myers greatest impact on his time with the Canucks. And I really wish we could keep Podkolzin in North America right now. I can’t help feeling that his development is stagnating in Russia to a significant degree.
-
True...but the Germans are a plucky group. I’m just happy to have another opportunity to watch Podkolzin play again.
-
There are a few Russian players who are rather breathtaking on the rush. Podz isn’t that. He is an industrious skater but it’s not really pleasing to the eye. Kind of reminds me of Cody Hodgson in this regard...though I think he’s a better skater than CoHo was. But he is on another level in terms of his “half court” game down low. These other kids can’t really move him once he has the puck on his stick down low. Could easily have a couple points in this game if his team mates could finish. I was disappointed in Podz first couple of games. I guess I was a “hater”. But I love what I’m seeing now. Just wish he was rewarded with some points for his efforts.
-
Quiet game for Podz thus far. Good board work right at the end of the period though....
-
Still think he’s a long shot to make the NHL. So much depends on his inner desire. I’m drawing a blank on the name of Petey’s little countryman who was supposed to join him on the Canucks. That dude may have not had the necessary skill , but he definitely didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to work on his game in Utica and fled back to Sweden. I hope Costmar gives it his best shot to come over to North America. Every team can use a skilled pest.
-
Oh yeah, I just came here to say that he really has that Jarkko Ruutu face. If he makes the big show for the Canucks, I foresee a lot of opponents wanting to punch it. :D
-
Here’s our next Burrows.
-
Oh man, Podz absolutely gassed during that PK. Last time I saw a Canuck prospect gasping for air like that was Juolevi during the training camp bag skate.
-
Podz is in absolute BEAST MODE right now. Lol at folks labelling those critical of his first few games as “haterz”. The dude was not playing at the level he is now. What we are seeing now is a player that will make an impact on the Canucks. What he does the Canucks sorely need...a heavy game along the boards with some very underrated offensive flair. If he can do a “Horvat” and improve his skating stride....look out. We just need to get the kid over here. Hope he can pick up English so that he can more easily meld into our core group of young, high qualiy group of young studs men.
-
When I said a three point night for Podz would be nice I should have been more greedy and called a three point first period I guess. That first shot was a legit, NHL caliber snipe and the second show some really nice instincts to get to net front and then some slick mitts to tuck that in. This is what people were expecting of the kid and now he is delivering. Let’s hope with the proverbial monkey is off his back and he can show what kind of high quality prospect he is for the rest of the tourney.
