  1. Kids got a shot, that's for sure
  2. Does Gaudette not play this weekend?
  3. An assist now too! Anyone watching this dominance?
  4. Hattrick now. All in the first
  5. I think people genuinely believe Bo is the only guy to ever go get a power skating coach to help improve his skating. Nothing annoys me more than how for every single prospect that can't skate the first thing that is said is how they will be better. "Just look at Bo" "send him to Bo's skating coach" Every single dam time, Bo isn't the norm, he's an outlier who drastically improved his skating after being drafted. Not many players can make those kind of steps with a bit of work and coaching.
  6. It's so odd to use a not only a player that played in a completely different era but also the best player of all time by far as a good example as why Pettersson can thrive as a skinny kid. Also Kane and Gaudreau are absolutely the best of the best when it come to edgework and stickhandling allowing them to play at such small statures. At least lets use more realistic comparables like the Sedins or Turris, tall skinny guys that have done well in this era without being absolutely elite skaters like most of the other small players that thrive in the NHL.
  7. Linds first season was 6 games....I wouldn't really count that as a "season".
  8. I noticed that the other day when looking at the NCAA scoring leaders. Looks like he could be the next big College free agent prize.
  9. Ya, it's pretty awesome that we have 5 in the top 50 and that's without Lind who is outscoring Glass, Steel, Bellows, Dube and Rassmusen. Hopefully Lind takes notice and it puts an even bigger chip on his shoulder.
  10. Canucks getting some love here. Good to see Gaudette getting the recognition he deserves.
  11. I'm fantasizing about Gaudette blowing all expectations out of the water and becoming a Selke canadidate 30 goal 70 point 1st line winger. Imagine: Dahlen - Gaudette - Pettersson Baertchi - Horvat - Boeser One can dream right?
  12. Oh people were high all right, I'd say the hype was equal or even more than what it is for Pettersson at the same stage in there careers. Cody wasn't putting up record numbers but he had just come off being arguably the best player on a gold medal winning Canadian World Junior team that featured John Tavares. Cody would have probably won the MVP if Tavares wasn't such a highly regarded player already. Imagine the hype of Pettersson if he had gone out and destroyed the WJC's and won MVP and a gold medal. That's what the hype was like for Hodgson, I never remember any questioning of his skating, it was just a matter of if he's going to be an elite 1st line player and captain or is he going to be a hall of fame player. Those were basically the only 2 options at the time. It was quite shocking when he played his 1st few games in the NHL and you realized how dam slow he was. Just had these short little legs and choppy stride, just the worst player I've ever seen try and play defense. Those are my memories of the time anyway.
  13. Looks like Kole' s point scoring streak came to an end tonight. 19 games I believe. Edit: 20 games.
  14. Cody was still hyped as $&!# though, after the WJC's where he scored 17pts and tied with John Tavares. Almost everyone believed he was going to be the next great Canuck player, I mean why wouldn't you after his junior and world junior performances. With the power of hindsight it's easy to say he always had skating issues. Not many people expected the utter failure that happened even with the skating issues. Same can be said for Pettersson though, he's still a skinny kid. Maybe he busts and you can look back and say...Well he was always a really skinny kid.
  15. This just shows you're only looking at the negative. He's played a couple games as the 7th D after coming back from the WJC's, now he's labelled as a 7th D man. Sergachev's season has been quite good, there's no denying that and is looking like a better pick right now but I'd say it's still arguable as after a hot start of 17pts in 25games he's put up 10 in the last 24 and only 3 points since the end of December. Also Sergachev has always been known to be an elite level offensive defenseman, the question has been whether or not he can think the game well enough to be a top pairing defenseman. He still hasn't answered that question as like I pointed out he's been massively sheltered having 70% of his starts in the O zone. So it's not as laughable and pathetic as you might think for me to say that it is still arguable who will be the better defenseman in the long run. IMO both guys will end up being top 4 guys but it will be very arguable who is the better player once they are both in their prime. What about the other guys you say are WAY better than Juolevi at this point? I'm curious why you think so.
  16. Way better? That's pretty dramatic to say way better as apart from McAvoy all those others are only arguably better. Saying way better is being very pessimistic. McAvoy - Ya he's looking like the cream of the crop of the draft Sergachev - Sure he's playing in the NHL and putting up points but in an incredibly sheltered role on an offensive Juggernaught. 70% o zone starts and has been a healthy scratch a few times Bean - Is he the one that Juolevi isn't better than? Chychrun - Just because your playing in the NHL sooner doesn't mean you'll be the better player...See Horvat vs Nichuskin Fabbro - Why do you think that he is projecting to be WAY better? I really find it hard to understand your viewpoint if you watched the WJC's at all. Juolevi showed why he was drafted where he was and apart from a few hiccups is still on pace to be the defender he was drafted to be.
  17. Yep. That's what discussion boards a for. Discussing. Seems like some people think that discussion boards are only for raw raw cheering on players and prospects and if you do anything else you're trolling. Nothing wrong with showing concern or calling it like it is when a player of prospect isn't showing well.
  18. If he $&!#'s the bed next year and doesn't make the team then there should definitely be some large warning bells going off about how much of an impact player he truly could be. Agree on that. But were talking about this year right now and getting a little bit overly concerned about being a healthy scratch after coming home from the WJC's in his D+2 year. I think you're getting a lot of flack because it's an odd time to critisize him. If you watched the WJC's you could see his potential to be an excellent NHL defender, he showed why he was drafted where he was, was voted top 3 player on Finland over 4 other 1st round picks. It's just an odd time to be overly concerned as from all accounts he was having a terrific 1st year in Finland, contributing a lot more offensively than expected, rounding out his defensive game while getting used to playing against men and a pro game. He then goes on to have an excellent WJC's, showing how far he has come yet now it's a big worry because he is scratched for a couple games. If he stays playing as 7th dman for the rest of the year because he isn't playing well than I can see reason for concern but lets wait for that or wait until after camp next year until we start being truly concerned because right now he has played excellent this year
  19. Having higher standards and expectations doesn't really relate to how long it takes until your in the NHL though. You have high standards and expectations on how good that player will be in the long run at their peak. You can take examples of other players to show that most successful top 5 picks were in the NHL in their D+2 seasons but that isn't a rule, plenty of top drafted high end defenseman who were in the NHL within their D+2 years ended up mediocre of being busts. There are examples of highly drafted defenseman who weren't in the NHL in their D+2 seasons. Also looking at the top 20 best defenseman in the NHL it's littered with guys who were drafted later in the round and took plenty of time to make the NHL. I really don't understand how or why you put so much emphasis on the time it takes for him to make the NHL. Maybe you're expectations are too high. Just because he was the first defeneman taken and was taken at 5th doesn't mean he has to be a #1 defenseman. IMO if he ends up like Hamhuis or Salo who were never really top pairing defenseman than it would be considered a win. It really comes down to who else would you have drafted at that position, a good argument could be made for Tkachuk or Sergachev. Juolevi could still easily be as good or better than those 2, hard to compare with Tkachuk who is a winger and while Sergachev is in the NHL and putting up points he has been massively sheltered and is playing on an offensive Juggernaught of a team. He's also been healthy scratched for looking tired and it's no guarantee he will be the better player in the long run. See Horvat vs Nichuskin. Also a thing to note is that due to Juolevi's age he can't play in the AHL, many of these defenseman that were playing in their d+2 years started in the AHL and were called up.
  20. Why would there be a set time for development? You draft a player for the player he will be in his prime, not the player he will be in 3 years. You can look a the history of top 5 picks and see that most high end top defenseman are in the NHL in at least there D+2 years, however if you look at the top defenseman in the league regardless of draft postion you will see that plenty of them took much longer that 2 years to make the NHL. It really doesn't matter where they were picked, it matter where they end up in the long run.
  21. It's no guarantee that Pettersson will be in the NHL next year. He has shown that he can get overwhelmed on the smaller ice surface against bigger players. My argument is that IF he's not in the NHL because he's not big enough and needs to get bigger, how detrimental to his overall ceiling would you put that? I'm not assuming that taking a project D man will pay off and not saying Juolevi was the best pick at the spot he was in, I'm just saying his physical maturity has had a big role in his development so far and now that he has put on weight and will have had a season to adjust and train next year will be a tell all year with no more excuses. I'd definitely argue that this year has had much more ups than downs, he's been playing great from all accounts until he came back from the WJC's tired. I mean he had a great WJC's and showed his potential, he's blowing any expectations of offensive contributions this year out of the water so taking a small hiccup of being benched for a few games after the WJC's as a major reason for concern is a little dramatic IMO. Heiskanen was also a healthy scratch at one point this year.
  22. Not all prospects are created equal though, every person physically matures at different times. If Pettersson isn't in the NHL next year because he is too skinny are you going to write him off? Some guys are just more physically mature than others at a younger age, look at Sergachev or McAvoy. Both guys were a lot more physically mature than Juolevi for their ages and respectively have had more success earlier in their careers. They didn't have to put on rapid weight gain because they were already physically strong enough. Chychrun is another example, the guy is a physical beast and in the NHL in his D+1, he already had the physical maturity to compete and didn't have to mature. Juolevi was a lanky skinny kid with a project-able frame, luckily for us it looks like he is going to be a solid 200+ lbs when he matures. We'll see how he looks next year after an off season of training
  23. That's arguable because I'd say his development has gone close to as expected. His main hurdle was gaining size, he did that over the off season. That was a big step and it would have been nice if that made him NHL ready but his speed and fitness took a hit which was clearly evident. He's put on size, now with this year and an off-season of training to get fit and work on his speed and adjust to his size he should be right on track to being an NHL player next year. If he looks lost and not ready next year I'd say there is cause for concern but physically he was very immature when drafted and his body needed to catch up. Next year will be a big tell all.
  24. It truly does give a lot of optimism for Lind's future when you see that he's not benefiting from playing with another elite talent to boost his stats. Add his ridiculous percentage of primary assists and it's really hard to not believe this kid has a very realistic chance at being a solid top 6 NHL player. Looking at the players above him in the WHL he really is one of the more impressive players and has arguably the most NHL potential. Steenbergen is in his 4th year and benefits from Hopaniemi massively, Hopaniemi is incredible but tiny. Most of the other guys are overagers in their 4+ years in the WHL. Matt Phillips is having a great season but he is tiny at 140lbs. Ty Lewis is another guy who's having a great season and only in his 3rd WHL season but LInd has a much better PPG then him. Looking at Lind's PPG, his projectable NHL frame, his primary point contributions and the fact that he doesn't benefit from another elite talent and it's hard to find a reason to not believe this kid has what it takes. Be exciting to see what he does in the AHL next year, how he plays without the puck and what he can do against men.
