I don't like the looks of that second line. Sutter and Hansen together make more of a checking line, putting Baertschi on it would nulify any chance for offense out of baertchi. Baertschi - Horvat -Shinkaruk/Rodin Gaunce - Sutter - Hansen deadly shutdown line that could pot a few goals. Also Sutter and Horvat could easily switch places if one guy is playing better offense than the other.

With Biega making the jump and Pedan playing well in his stint so far. I wonder what the D will look like if Tyramkan comes over and is ready for the NHL (I'm skeptical he can make a jump that large right away but with his size and skating he might have an easy time making the jump). Edler - Tanev Hutton - Biega Pedan - Tyramkin Just remembered Sbisa, guess this is more of a 2 years down the road kind of thing. A lot of inexperience but I love the size and culture change it would bring to our lineup. Having Pedan and Tyramkin instead of Weber and Bartakowski would change the whole attitude and makeup of the team. Next year could be Edler - Tanev Hutton - Biega (a few years away from being real good but I think these two will make a great pairing once Hutton starts to come into his own) Pedan - Sbisa (both lefties. This may not work, Sbisa is sketchy enough on his good side. Serving up free pizzas for the other team) Tyramkin is also a lefty, looks like someone is going to be playing of their off side or trades will be made. I'm just happy we have guys in the system that can be effective 5-6 d men instead of relying of ugly FA signings like Weber, Bartakowski, Rome..... The list goes on. (actually Rome was ok as a 6 dman but ya know what I mean)

This is why he needs to go to juniors after this tournament. In the NHL he doesn't stick handle or do anything creative, he's just always trying to make the safe play. Jake needs to gain confidence and get lots of practice with his stick handling skills. Obviously management think they can develop Jake in the NHL but I think it's a mistake. He needs time and space to develop his offensive abilities.
-
Excellent post. Benning seems hell bent on rushing Jake's development in the hopes he can be an impact player before the Sedins retire. As you pointed out Jake needs to work on so many different aspects of his game that he needs time and opportunity to work on this. The NHL is the wrong place for Jake at this point of his development.

You have to be careful when mentioning any sort of critique of a prospect in these parts. Lots of sensitive feels to be hurt. If Boeser had elite skating he probably would have been drafted higher. Thankfully skating is a skill that can be improved while Boesers elite shot and hockey sense are something you either have or don't, and he has those in spades.
-
It's not about the 6th overall pick it's about who was picked after him. We'll see how it turns out but if Nylander/Ehlers /Ritchie turn out to be elite players than it was a huge mistake of a pick, especially considering the huge question marks in his game even before the draft.
-
Wow. How many of those goals went top glove. Lol. Boeser has his favourite spot that's for sure
-
Just meant as his replacement
-
I like it. McCann down as well Horvat - Vey McCann - Friesen Horvat and McCann get to go have fun and play tonnes of minutes and put up points. Bonus is a better shot at Matthews
-
I like this idea, giving Virtanen and McCann a long taste of the NHL action before getting sent down could be better in the long anyway. They know the level they need to strive toward being at and can really work on their game while getting tonnes of playing time.
-
I agree that Virtanen played well and people were praising him but Gaunce also played very well, he played at least as good as Virtanen if not better. Gaunce was in line for the spot but due to his status Virtanen got the spot. It is true that no one knows what's best for his development, I'd say not even management can accurately say what's best. He may develop fine and even develop faster which would be great having him contributing while the Sedins are still playing. Or he may get slowed down and stalled in development. Anyone's guess and we're all here to argue about it endlessly.
-
I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. IMO it was obvious Gaunce looked much more NHL ready then Virtanen and most people thought the same, if Virtanen could have been sent to the AHL he would have over Gaunce. I think a lot of people never believed he should have made the team and are now vocal about that because he hasn't shown that he's ready.
-
He definitely looks to have a good first step and good acceleration which is probably more important anyway. Don't think he has the elite top end speed, just going on what I've read. I'm no expert by far. Kinda reminds me of Domi really. Good Edgework and acceleration to find open spaces and also attack the puck. How nice would it be if he pans out to be an elite winger. Him and McCann could be a deadly combo.
-
He ddintdidn't rellyreally do the grind, he got injured a bunch and barely played and had his career derailed. The guys dream is to play in the NHL, I bet he's willing to sign a 2 way contract
-
I like the Hemsky Baertchi comparison, crafty small playmaking players, also not aggressive enough to really make much of an impact. Hopefully Baertchi can be more relevant than Hemsky. As for Boeser I think your over estimating his skating ability, he's not know for being a good skater. He's not bad but it's not a strong suit of his like Patrick sharp.
-
So far I like: Horvat - O'reilly McCann - Krejci (comparing players to hall or fame players is kinda silly) Virtanen - E. Kane Boeser - Couture Shinkaruk - Zuccarello? Baertchi - T. Johnson? (I don't see the vanek comparable at all. Vanek is a big goal scoring guy while Baertchi is a small playmaker)

I'm not going to dig through interviews and such to find the exact quote but it went along the line of "we now have guys in the lineup that are young and inexperienced that are being worked with to move the development along sooner". It makes sense from a gms perspective as he knows he needs to try and get something out of this team before the Sedins retire. I think he's hoping that giving spots to McCann and Virtanen now they can be developed a rapid pace. It makes sense with what he's said and what is happening with the team, also why virtanen got a spot over Gaunce who looked better in the preseason and has paid his dues in the AHL. I can see it working with McCann because he has that competitive fire and the smarts to learn and get better, you don't hear people saying he needs to go down. (i still think it would be better but he is competitive here and getting better). But Virtanen is different and more raw and IMO has a higher chance of stalling in development being in the NHL.
-
Patience is what almost everyone is screaming, it's impatient to have him playing right now with the team. JB had stated many times that unfortunately the team sacrificed picks and prospects for a shot at the cup and now young guys are having to be put in the lineup ahead of schedule in the hope that their development can be hurried up. It could work but it's anything but patient.
-
I get that. He does have the physical abilities to compete and he could develop just fine in the NHL. The problem for me is that since his 45 goal pre draft year he has seemed to stall or regress offensively and there is a distinct possibly that his offensive game won't develop playing in the NHL. Maybe it will but if it were up to me I wouldn't sacrifice long term potential for short term team needs. I'd hate to have used our top pick since the Sedins on a guy who never develops to be be more than a 3rd liner.
-
I see more of a comparison to McCann this year as horvat last year, not virtanen. Both played solid in they're roles and make few mistakes. They filled a need on the team while showing that they belong and getting a little better every game. While virtanen does fill a niche that we need, he doesn't hit on the regular and floats most of the time. He doesn't look to be improving much either. He wasn't drafted to be a 2 way guy with the hope of some offence like Horvat. He was drafted to be a goal scoring power forward. It's really all hearsay and guesswork on what's best for him so we'll have to agree to disagree on what we think is best. Also looking at horvats struggles this year, who's to say it wasn't the best move to keep him up. Look at Domi's or Draitle's dominance this year, hard to argue that the extra year in junior is a bad thing. Maybe Horvat would have been better off with the extra year of juniors, some domination in the world juniors and this year being eased into a role in the NHL.
-
The problem? Sacrificing Jake's career potential for short term gains to make the team marginally better is a mistake IMO. Surely you can't be watching Jake play and saying that he's ready for the NHL? Just look at the difference between him and McCann or Hutton. Those are a couple of young guys who have the smarts and skills to compete and develop in the NHL. Management obviously believed that Jake was ready, we don't know if they are questioning that decision now and may send him down. Obviously they know more about hockey than the random hockey fan but doesn't mean that they don't make mistakes. Just look through the history of teenagers obviously put in the NHL too young and had they're development stalled or ruined. Mistakes happen even by "real" hockey people.
-
These "real" hockey people also have ticket sales to worry about and jobs they could lose if the team fails in the short term. It's not unreasonable to understand that they are pressured into making decisions that may not be best for the long term development. We can agree on the Calgary thing. It's just not right there.
-
I haven't been to Calgary but I find it hard to believe that playing top line minutes and working on his puck skills rather than just doing the dump and chase routine here in limited minutes is better for his development. I think management is thinking short term with Jake and hoping to have him be an impact guy before the Sedins retire is why he's not sent down. It's a stab in the dark and not the best for his entire career and a short sighted plan. OK, sure physically he literally has outgrown juniors. But not as a hockey player in the skills department.
-
My theory is that JB is hoping to fast track the development of prospects in the desperate hope that they become impact players before the Sedins retire. I can understand the idea as we're hooped once the Sedins are gone for quite a while. I can see it working with McCann, I can see Virtanen being slightly ahead of the curve but in the long run for his peak seasons I think he should get sent down
