  1. He never seems to bend at the legs when battling on the boards and stands tall. Makes it easy for guys to push him off the puck
  2. Like a few things about his game. Extremely physically talented, skates and hits incredibly. Worried about his lack of puck skills and intelligence. Doesn't read the play well and doesn't cycle well or use his teammates well. Play died often on his stick and every line he played in seemed to lack chemistry. Not a good sign. Players don't excel in the NHL on physical talent alone like the NBA or NFL and intelligence can't be taught. IMO virtanen will need to learn to score and play better in the o zone because it seems he scores mostly off the rush which is rare for a pro player. Thankfully he's guaranteed to be a good 3rd liner minimum due to his size and speed. Didn't outplay the guys he was drafted before in Ritchie, Ehlers, and Nylander.
  3. I'm guessing the excitement of playing in the tournament has worn off and this is more of the game you'd expect to see from virtanen. I doubt he's injured.
  4. I can't imagine anyone who has actually watched him play compares him to Jeff Carter. Evander Kane or kreider are definitely the best comparisons
  5. Oh ya bud. Def left me scratching my head with his decisions out there quite often. So much raw talent, does he have the head to match?
  6. I really like how virtanen uses his speed to close gaps on players with the puck, he creates a lot of turnovers in the neutral zone because of it. A real great thing about his game. I think he's going to be a real frustrating player to watch in years to come though, will dazzle and be absolutely dominant at points and will fade away for long periods and make boneheaded plays with and without the puck at times. The kind of guy who has people wondering why your yelling at a tv. Will be entertaining either way.
  7. Virtanen needs to make better decisions with and without the puck. I keep wondering what the hell he was thinking with his plays.
  8. I doubt Virtanen will be cut before those guys. Hopefully he gets a chance to play with more offensive guys than Gauthier though. Won't be much fun to watch if tonight's game is any indication of how virtanen will be used. The top two lines got tonnes of opportunity but not much for virtanen.
  9. I was really looking forward to seeing Virtanen with the open ice. Ritchie played a lot better than Virtanen throughout the game though.
  10. Finally a good shift by Virtanen. He's quick on the ice, hard to contain
  11. Wonder what it is about Virtanens game that the coaches don't like. Not a good sign if he can't make the team.
  12. Virtanen benched? 6min in and no shifts
  13. I've watched a couple hitmen games. Virtanen has been pretty unimpressive imo. Wasn't creating any chances, was losing puck battles a lot to smaller players and was overall not that noticable until he made a big hit. Hopefully it's rust but he has definitely not impressed me in the games I've seen myself.
  14. I'd really like the team to get some more skill into the second line so Higgins and burrows can be on Horvats wings. I think that would be a great 3rd line. Kassian - Bonino - Vey/Jensen? Not a fan of this combo, maybe a trade for a good 2nd line winger. Higgins - Horvat - Burrows I'd just love to see this line, probably not this year but if Vey, Kassian or Jensen progress enough this year I could see it happening.
  15. I think its obvious Bo is ready for the NHL in a defensive roll. Question is how to maximize his limited offensive potential, would juniors be better getting playing time and lots of offensive opportunities or the NHL where he would be getting used to the speed of the pro game or would it even matter?
  16. Tonights game was the 1st game of the tournament that I caught and Gaunce impressed me as well, maybe not so much in a wow this kid is good sort of sense but he impressed me in that he looks a lot faster on the ice this year as compared to last which is what is going to be his make or break factor on whether he makes the NHL or not. From watching him last year to this year I think he's progressing nicely to be a decent 3rd line centerman that chips in the odd goal here and there. Smart player, if he can keep improving his skating he'll be a decent player.
  17. Anyone know the time line on Virtanens return? Curious if he'll be in training camp with the canucks.
  18. Just shows his abilities. There's a reason a lot of scouts doubt that his skills will translate to the nhl
  19. So disappointed. Virtanen can skate, hit and shoot. All is great except he can't think the game and can't pass. 26 assists? So frustrating. Future 3rd liner
  20. Terrible.... Absolutely junk. Buyout booth then draft his clone. Not a good start for Benning. What a waste of the highest pick since the Sedins
  21. Awesome stuff so far this year with management. From the linden hiring, to getting Benning and now getting the coach they wanted in WD! I love taking a chance on a new coach rather than another regurgitated NHL coach, Def worth the gamble, hopefully get the next Babcock.
  22. It really is quite impressive how much Nylander seems to have raised his stock by demonstrating his elite athleticism. You can see his explosiveness in how quickly he moves around the ice. Endurance is an important attribute to he able to compete at a high level throughout an entire season and playoffs.
  23. "Vertec squat jump provided the highest correlation (0.47) between leg power ranking and selection order and was judged to most closely approximate the full-body coordinated movements involved in hockey. The Vertec device using a squat jump protocol is most appropriate for coaches and fitness specialists to use when evaluating hockey potential based on the off-ice leg power measurements of elite hockey players." This sort of explains why these exercises relate to skating. I really don't think the theory is stating that guys who perform well in these exercises are more likely to develop into successful NHL players. It seems to be a really simple experiment that only corelates the performance in vertek jumping and horizontal jumping to relative draft postion. It really has nothing to do with how succesfull these players will be once they become adults and NHL players. Just means guys that get drafted higher tend to have better results in these tests. Probably because jumping is an explosive exercise that uses the same muscle groups as skating therefor better skaters have better results. Better skaters tend to be drafted higher. I really don't think it has anything to do with future success or deciding which higher ranked draft picks will be more successful vs other higher ranked draft picks.
  24. "Abstract The purposes of this study were (a) to determine the measurement device and jumping protocol most appropriate for testing the leg power of elite hockey players and ( b ) to assess the relationship of leg power measurements to hockey playing ability as indicated by draft selection order. Comparisons were made of leg power measurements from the top 95 players entering the National Hockey League Entry Draft using 2 devices (Vertec and Just Jump) and 2 jump protocols (countermovement and squat). Players' leg powers were ranked from highest to lowest power using each device and protocol and were correlated with draft selection order. Vertec leg power measurements were highest (5,511-5,631 W), but there were no significant differences in power between the 2 jumping protocols on either device. Vertec squat jump provided the highest correlation (0.47) between leg power ranking and selection order and was judged to most closely approximate the full-body coordinated movements involved in hockey. The Vertec device using a squat jump protocol is most appropriate for coaches and fitness specialists to use when evaluating hockey potential based on the off-ice leg power measurements of elite hockey players." This kind of explains it...not so much why it horizontal or vertical jumping corelate to determining success of draft picks but that these two excersises have the most corelation to draft ranking. I.E the higher draft picks have higher scores in these exercises vs lower draft picks. That's at least how I understand it.
  25. It would be amazing because pull ups have absolutely no impact on how potentially good of an NHL player a kid can become. The excercise that has been proven to have the most impact on how good of a future NHL player will be is the standing long jump. Bennett was one of the most impressive there with obviously room to mature and develop physically. I'm not a huge fan of his game but if he fell to us because he can't do pull ups then we should be dam happy. Standing long jump is the best predictor for potential NHL success https://twitter.com/bodybyobrien/status/473171048197001216 Bennett having the most impressive jumping ability that this guy has worked with (Crosby, Mckinnon ect.) https://twitter.com/bodybyobrien/status/473172117043675136
