  1. Juolevi doesn't seem like the kind of player that's going to show up and wow anyone with his play to me. He is too cerebral of a player, he'll take more time then fans would hope to adjust to the pace of the game. Same as it was for him adjusting to the play of the Finish league it took him until halfway through the season before he really started to fit in and wasn't until the end of the year once there were injuries to the top defenseman that allowed Juolevi to play with more responsibility and by then he had adjusted and he excelled. I would expect the same next year out of Juolevi, it will take him most of a season at least to truly adjust to the pace of the game before he starts to excel.
  2. Any defense with Gudbranson on the top pairing isn't formidable. I like Gudbranson as he fills a role on the team and plays his role fairly well but that role is anchoring a 2nd or 3rd pairing with an offensive defenseman. IMO Edler and Stecher will be the top pairing OJ and Tanev might end up being a pairing but if Juolevi makes the team it will be on the 3rd pairing or as a 7th defenseman. Tanev gets too much valuable ice time against tough opponents to pair him with a rookie.
  3. I think Juolevi - Gudbranson will be a tire fire. Watching Joulevi play he will use his D partner a lot to get out of the zone, he'll make a lot of quick little small creative chips and passes to avoid forecheckers. It works extremely well with a partner that has some puck skills to do something with the puck but we all know what happens when Gudbranson tries to make a play with the puck. I think Juolevi would put Gudbranson in a lot of situaltions he can't deal well with, also if Juolevi doesn't see a good pass he very often differs to his D partner on the other side who then makes the breakout pass. Again not something Gudbranson is any good at.
  4. Well I would just say that Heiskenan is better than Juolevi so they took the better player. But I don't get to watch Heiskenan play much except for the WJC's so I was taking your word for Juolevi being better down the stretch and suggesting why they would take Heiskenan over Juolevi if that was the case. Opinions are just opinions in the end but I don't buy the conspiracy that Finland didn't take Juolevi over Heiskenan because of burnt bridges rather than Heiskenan just being a better player.
  5. I think it would be a big stretch to say Juolevi is more deserving of a spot than Heiskenan even if he outplayed him slightly down the stretch as you suggest. Heiskenan is just a better overall defender and I'm sure Finland see's the potential in him for future tournaments for team Finland and would prefer to give him the playing time and experience over Juolevi.
  6. Heiskenan is the only player younger than Juolevi to make the team. Every other Fin D has a lot more pro experience than Juolevi. Nothing to be upset or worried about for sure.
  7. Why feel the need to say negative things? Because this is a discussion forum for discussing the Canucks and not everything is always positive so it makes sense to discuss both things that are positive and negative. I don't understand the logic of you're only a fan if you only say positive things about the team. If you disagree with a move the coach makes then it's ok to say that. Disagree with something the GM does, it's ok to say it. Make note of a player that is playing like $&!#, it's ok to point it out. I don't get why your only a "true" fan if you only say positive things. If a player is playing great or a coach or GM does a great thing then ya you'll discuss that but sometimes things aren't always positive. Same thing goes with prospects. Almost every prospect has something they need to work on, a weakness. Why is it a bad thing to discuss that? For me it's one of the fun things about following prospects, watching what the do well and also watching for what they don't. For a guy like Pettersson he's amazing but his only weakness is his size and strength, is it wrong to mention that? For a guy like Horvat he did everything well but he was a slow skater, was it wrong to point that out as something he needs to work on? Same with Hodgson, he was slow as $&!# and he needed to get faster if he wanted to get better. Almost every prospect has some weaknesses and I really struggle to understand why it's frowned upon by some posters to point these things out.
  8. I don't even know how to respond to this nonsense. Praised for thinking negatively? No one is asking for praise. I hope you were just drunk when you wrote this
  9. Yes I know how many times you've watched him, you say it a lot. The thing is is that you'll never say anything remotely negative about a prospect and take anything that anyone says that is remotely negative as an insult to the player. Almost every prospect has something they need to work on, a weakness that that player needs to overcome and it isn't trolling or trying to knock that player down to point these things out. It's just constructive criticism but for somebody who supposedly watches these players these players so much I don't think I've ever read you write anything remotely negative about a prospect even though they obviously aren't perfect and have weaknesses to their game so it's impossible not to take what you say with a grain of salt because your homerism and bias shines brightly.
  10. This is definitely part of it. Before the draft when you watched Juolevi he was so quick to the puck in corners and defending, it was a real strength of his to go along with his ultra smooth elite skating. Now that he's heavier he still has that ultra smooth elite skating but he lacks a bit in quickness (IMO). Seems to be a bit of a disconnect when you talk about his skating because he really his a high end skater, so smooth and agile so you can say he is an elite skater yet he can still have slightly slow feet at the same time. Hopefully something that comes with training, adding muscle and getting used to his size.
  11. Ya I could see that being something he said as well. Juolevi has a tendency to play fairly casual and try and slow the game down a bit. Which can be a good thing as he doesn't panic and is patient with the puck but he needs to find a happy balance of more urgency while maintenance that cool and composed nature. Probably why he is so good come playoff time because that sense of urgency comes into his game and he transforms into this phenenal defender. Still though I think Salo is referring to his quickness skating. Personally I notice it as his one weakness. 1 v1 a defender can easily create space on Juolevi by shifting back and forth a few times. Juolevi doesn't quite have to quickness to pivot back and forth fast enough and the forward will make a bunch of space for himself. I could see NHL level forwards exploiting this.
  12. I've watched a bunch of games with TPS this year and I would say Salo is talking about Juolevi's quickness in regards to skating vs his decision making. He is an excellent skater once he's moving and like you said he often is leading the rush and the first guy back. He also uses he excellent skating to break up plays in the neutral zone. However one thing about Juolevi is he juat isn't that quick on his feet. Whether it's pivoting or accelerating. He is very smooth but just not that quick. With his hockey IQ and talent if he can improve on his quickness he will easily be an elite defender but right now from what I see he'll need to improve on that, like Salo says if he wants to be a truly effective NHL defenseman.
  13. Gaudette was 2015 with Jasek I can definitely see Palmu being a decent bottom 6 NHL player. He has the speed and tenacity to be a solid forechecker and he truly is a little skating fire hydrant out there. With his low center of gravity he more often then not comes out of puck battles along the boards with the puck which is exactly what you want out of a bottom 6 winger.
  14. Sounds about right for Joulevi's year and development. Took some big steps and adjusted to coming out of junior and playing a faster game with men. Definitely needs to get quicker on his feet and up his tempo to be an effective defenseman in the NHL. He needs to be able to close gaps quicker and be able to keep pace with the quicker forwards of the NHL.
  15. No doubt. He's actually got some muscle on that frame. Makes more sense how he is able to unleash those deadly shots.
  16. Wake up. Turn on game. Watch Elias score on the first 2 shifts I see him on. He's so &^@#ing good!
  17. I knew I woke up early for a reason! Holy $&!#!
  18. He'd probably be with Dobson and Bouchard. Hughes and Boqvist are going to be valued differently. Bouchard played with the Knights as well as Juolevi and has put up a lot more points but Juolevi's defensive game was never questioned while Bouchard's is. I'd say he'd be pretty even with Dobson, both play solid 2 way games have solid frames with some offensive upside and great IQ
  19. I know...I was watching the game and when I saw Pettersson go into the corner with the defender right on him I was really curious to know how Pettersson would handle the oncoming check. Well not only did Pettersson slinky out of getting hit he turned it into a goal. I'm sure the defender was excited to lay a lick on the skinny young kid but he made him the fool and dummied him.
  20. Now a Goal! Turned on the game and 5 minutes later Pettersson has a goal and an assist
  21. Wonder if Eberle is a good comparible to Dahlen. Smaller guy who just knows where to be and how to score.
  22. I know it's no big deal because Olli showed how good he is this year but more so that it would show a definite beef with Finland's management.
  23. So Jokijaru was just added to Finlands WJC team. Any word on Juolevi? Be pretty crazy if Jokijaru was added and Juolevi isn't
  24. No doubt. Only on the ice for 1 goal against in a 6-5 game. That's very impressive considering he played 26 minutes. I wonder if he was being matched against the top line as well. The Fraser pairing got smoked.
