  1. Dineen looked like he ripped the OT reffing to the US coach after the game. And rightly so. Idiots should have just kept their whistle in their pockets. The third period comeback was not as messed up by bad reffing and Canada's goaltender made several HUGE saves in OT, and the empty net miss was huge. So it's not like the US didn't have their chances to bury us. At the end of the day the US has nobody to blame but themselves for this loss.
  2. At this rate no help arriving via trade made available this deadline can help us. I hope Gillis realizes this. It's over.
  3. How does Burrows break his hand while hugging Phil Kessel? AWFUL season, Alex. Just awful.

Poor Kessel the Rodney Dangerfield of the NHL :(

  4. Kariya had scored 100pts in 39 games before he was drafted. No I would not ignore that. He's also 5'11. Martin St. Louis is the go-to example for short players these days. He is a pure muscle freak of nature. He's one of the toughest, if not the toughest player in the league. Bure wasn't huge, but wasn't tiny either. He was also a freak, and elitely skilled. I'm suggesting the Canucks get more players like him. Ciccarelli was around the same size as Bure. Savard was 5'10". He scored 181pts in 72gp before being drafted. Would that be ignored by anyone? Nope. Clarke was 5'10" 168pts in 59gp before being drafted. Theo Fleury is the other true short man's go-to guy. 129pts in 66gp. His ultra-aggressive style earned him a job and he had an outstanding career. If i'd pick a short man, he'd have to play a similar style of game. Make up for lack of size by being a real pain in the butt. Brad Marchand? Both he and St. Louis weighed a lot for their height, while maintaining speed. Freaks. Verbeek also played a real chippy game. Would not be overlooked. Recchi 5'10" 154pts in 62gp while not playing a total puff game. This kind of skill won't be ignored. Dionne may be the best short guy to never do anything in the playoffs. 62g and 143pts in 46gp. Would I have passed on that do draft Guevremont, Carr or Martin? Probably not. The Canucks' problem in their drafting history is that the vast majority of smallish guys they picked aren't elite skilled or aggressive.
  5. Since the Diaz trade, Price has looked awesome. Luongo? Not so much. Strange, since he was supposed to help our pitiful, broken-up defense,
  6. Since when does ice size dictate playing style? "Oh, the ice made us hang back and trap all game." Yeah, right. I'm not a big fan of bringing over big ice either, but the point is moot. Not only with the NHL ever reconfigure, but it will have utterly no effect on getting coaches to switch to a more offensive style. Want to create more offense? Simply penalize defensive play. It's not all that fair, but it will sure bring about more offense.
  7. Bouwmeester is faster, but Edler is more dynamic. I wish Edler was faster too, but oh well. The guy i was hoping for more from is Pietrangelo. He hasn't turned out to be as offensively-gifted as hoped. He has been very steady though, so putting him in over Subban in tight games is the safe choice.
  8. What did MSL do exactly? His speed was supposed to be showcased in offensive opportunities and none of that came. Instead he looked out of place and got knocked down a lot. However, he can score just as well as Kunitz or any other player. Anyway, I don't understand how useless hyperbole and basing an opinion on somebody else's or perhaps NHL14 counts as end-all-argument hockey knowledge. And honest assessment of Kunitz's game today reveals that he's just fine. Much more suited for a grinding-type game like today's was. The focus on Kunitz has been stupid. It would've been Nash if not for what he did in NY leading up to the Olympics, but now it's just Kunitz. Mainly because we need somebody to whine about, right?
  9. Well, it's just that your assessment is flawed. Esp. when you mentioned Jay Bouwmeester as being dynamic.
  10. Kunitz had one of the better opportunities to score all game, but did not score. A lot of of our forwards did not score. Are they all useless pieces of meat too?
  11. All i meant was the Swiss are going to play the same way buddy. Boring sitting back and waiting for mistakes. What makes it exciting is the close score and the tension created by every mistake being a potential game-ender. But the play itself? Meh.
  12. Had nothing to do with my team not dominating. Both teams sat back and waited for mistakes for large portions of the game buddy. What game were you watching?
  13. Good thing to practice playing ultra-boring hockey this game if we're just going to draw the Swiss next game.
  14. Boyle has slowed down, so that's why he didn't make it. Subban at this point is a sub in case Pietrangelo, Doughty or Weber goes down. Always was. I don't think he should've won the Norris trophy. He's not that good. Suter should've won it that year.

    Anton Rodin | RW/LW

He might be 18, but he's also 6'4 and 200lbs and can skate. His development in Dallas should come as no surprise. A lot of the bust Russians you speak of are of the smallish or sluggish variety. Given where the Canucks are at now, ie. a team absolutely desperate for scoring, there was no reason to assume he couldn't work out here. Oh... Unless we're still a xenophobic franchise, that is. Again, i hope Bure's return works to our favour in the future. No i don't want to fill the team with Russians, but these big, fast, skilled ones? Yeah i think they would be a good option. Alas, Horvat will be good. And he's a center, so that's a plus. Shinkaruk is more of a question mark going forward than most here will admit. Major surgery this early? Not a staple for most greats.

Remember when we could've had Tatar for free? Now we have to listen to all these rumours of trading Edler straight up for him, while Rodin will be in Sweden indefinitely. There are several players in that class I would have picked above Rodin, actually. Meanwhile, Schroeder was quite clearly the incorrect pick to make in the 1st round. Hey, rumours of Edler straight up for ROR, who we took a pass on. I'm seeing a pattern here. We should really be able to pick correct 1st and 2nd rounders. It isn't that difficult. All the basic scouting for the early rounds is practically done for us.

Call me what you want. I want more fans here to wake the f up and start demanding things from their beloved franchise. Too many years of futility in many, many a regard.

Hey, winning is entertaining. And i'd rather watch the team win than be forced to entertain myself by complaining about their historically awful drafting. Yeah, 40+ years of that kind of 'entertainment' is quite enough, thanks.

Our 2013 draft wasn't as pathetic as usual, but it still could have been better. Probably a xenophobe thing, but why did we pass on Nichushkin, the obvious pick at the time, and Zykov? I just don't understand the whole 'no more Russians' thing, when the best player we ever drafted was Russian. Makes no sense. Zykov's gonna be a gooder. Again, LA. We're going to be worse than them for the foreseeable future. Is it truly a 'draft the best player available' thing for the Canucks? Nope. Rarely do we do that. Maybe bringing Pavel Bure back in the fold will allow us to start drafting some decent Russians again? Leave no stone unturned? etc.

I said we will have to wait now, and then the responses will be 'well gee, hindsight is 20/20.'

lol Jordan Subban will never be an effective NHL defenseman. When he's lighting it up in Utica for the bulk of his career, LA drafted yet another big winger to hammer us every game. Meanwhile Shinkaruk is broken, dropping him from 'sure bet one-dimensional shifty winger' to 'crossing our fingers now'. Now that he's well behind his class in development, it's going to be sad seeing all these other guys pass him by on their way to likely better NHL careers. Not good for a Canucks team on the edge of a blow up and rebuild. Rumour is we knew he was severely banged-up when we drafted him too. Good work, Canucks. And Horvat is still in junior while the big russian kid is in NHL top-liner already and is in the Olympics. So i'd have to dig deep to see where we 'cleaned up' here. Let's see... Cole Cassels may pan out, but he's no huge steal. Much like his father, he's a complimentary centerman, at best. A first-liner on a horrible team. A second-liner on a so-so team. Yay. Cederholm may become a depth defenseman for us. Limited top-4 shutdown potential. I have no problem with the pick, actually, but he's aways off and well-sheltered on a stacked Winterhawks junior squad. Not enough steps above his draft peers to plan a parade about. Williamson is another college guy we'll likely never hear from again. His upside is more AHLish than anything, but we're down there in the 6th round. LA's pick will likely turn out to be better. (It's an ongoing trend, so we shouldn't have to spend a lot of time wondering why they're way better than us now.) And Liberati in the 7th round is an AHL defenseman, tops. Looked good on a stacked London Knights team. Not so good now. Sorry, but I fail to see how we 'cleaned up' here. Several picks could have been better. Prediction: Years later, using 20/20 hindsight, i will be proven correct. Oh wait, that prediction is foresight. Sigh... At least Horvat will still become a good player. Not a great one, but a good one. Baby steps.
