  1. Rumor has it Barry Trotz didn't want to come here anyway. Heard that from the "The Moj" while driving home tonight. Promised to offer more details later in the show around 7:00. Can't remember who he was interviewing then. Not sure if he meant the Canucks specifically or just Canada in general. Might not have wanted to go from relative anonymity in Nashville to the fishbowl of Vancouver all in one move. Might have thought Washington was a happier medium. All a moot point now regardless
  2. I'll certainly agree there seems to be MUCH more to the "Torts" saga than first met the eye. Too bad, as I had really hoped he would give this stagnant core a deserved kick in the ass. Obviously all the other BS that went along with the "kick" is intolerable, and if true, certainly justifies the firing and then some. Rank him right up there with Mike Keenan and Bill LaForge for idiocy as well. On the better side, I'm sure his short tenure here will help Linden form certain opinions and ideas regarding the teams future direction as it is painfully obvious we need to change certain aspects of our core as well as how our core is motivated.
  3. Agreed! Linden, etal better fix our roster this summer (or at least start to) because the current Canucks are NOT capable of playing the hockey we are watching in this years playoffs, and our two goalies (really like Lack by the way) are not capable of putting on some of the goaltending shows we have seen either.
  4. Edler for sure. Kesler has stated he wants to remain a Canuck as well.
  5. Tell me what Linden can really change thanks to MG and his rather lengthy, NTC contracts? Couple that with the fact that players have already stated they won't waive their NTC anyways. Looks like we are stuck with what we have give or take a few rookies possibly making the team. IMHO we need a new top 6 for Line 1 and Line 2 as well as an Erhoff type to bolster our defence. Hard to get that when you only have 5.6 million to play with and the current players you might possibly might want to move don't want to move. No smiley face for that, as well as the fact that I have no doubt that we will all be back here at the same time next year discussing the same old, same old, with our tired, aging, stale core, that will have (again) told us that they still feel they can get back to playing the way they know how to play. As far as McLennan goes, that was just speculation in regards to him possibly being available after this years epic playoff collapse. A thought that was also shared by Farhan Lalji this morning on TSN. Hey who knows maybe Hitchcock might be available as well. I certainly take either or over Torts, but then when I started this thread both were still in the playoff hunt so their availability or the possibility thereof was a moot point.
  6. Could very well be, but if the core remains basically the same, even Scotty Bowman could not resurrect this team and I have a bad feeling we'll be rehashing this thread and having the same discussion this time next year. Hope I'm wrong.
  7. Horrible mistake by Linden. Wrong move by the Canucks organization in general. Justifies the actions (or in this case) the NON actions of our core group and bolsters the fact that they were right and all the coaches (and a good number of the fans) were wrong. It's obvious that Linden (and all of us) are stuck with this lazy ass core for the foreseeable future thanks to all of the ridiculous NTC's handed out by MG. Obvious the players aren't going to waive either. Guess we'll never really know the whole story about what Torts was promised by MG when he was hired. Too bad. Sad for Torts being thrown under the bus like he is. Looks like the same old, same old, for next season coupled with the fact that it looks like Linden will be hiring a new coach that is great in the regular season (McLennan) but can't for the life of him get his team past the first or second round of the playoffs. Oh. Sorry. He did get to the conference finals one year. Our Canucks beat him. Go Figure. No wonder I don't watch too much Canucks hockey anymore. So done with this core. More pond hockey and more "cycle the puck" in 2014-1015. Oh joy I can hardly wait.
  8. Might as well face it. Torts isn't going anywhere this summer. Pretty sure Aquilini isn't going to payout Gills (most likely already happened) buyout what ever (name X) player in the summer, AND payout Torts as well? Yes Aquilini does have a lot of money, but he didn't get it by being frivolous. Besides have you read the papers lately? Appears the Aquilinis have been on a bit of a property - business buying spree. Might not feel too comfortable paying out a coach that just might pay dividends for the team given the right mix of players. Also. GM's and coaches see to be dropping like flies this offseason with possibly more to come. If Benning is our man, and the Bruins do go deep into the playoffs, we might not see Benning until just before the draft. (mid June) Might not be very many decent coaching candidates even left by then. My money is on Torts starting the 2014-2015 season as the Canucks head coach albeit on a VERY, VERY short lease. Assistants, etc., may be different from last year depending on a number of factors.
  9. Now that we have that settled and you appear to be happy, maybe we can get back on topic?
  10. I wouldn't talk about lacking substance. What team do you really support by the way? :)
  11. I guess you fail to remember Mike Gillis' first news conference. Pretty much threw the whole team under the bus and stated point blank that we (at that time) weren't good enough to compete for the Stanley Cup. Flash forward 7 or so years (after our rise to almost winning it all, and the subsequent slide into oblivion) and Torts says the same thing (which is VERY true by the way) and you are crucifying him for it? Personally I found what Gillis had to say 7 years ago and what Torts had to say 2 weeks ago, VERY refreshing. Die hard Canucks fan by the way.
  12. How do you know Torts didn't collaborate with management (Gillis) and Gillis didn't or couldn't deliver on what was needed. Gillis got fired didn't he? As far as hiding out weakness (sorry but every team in the league has the Sedins "cycle" figured out) he did in fact try and hide our weaknesses by getting this team to play a style and adopt a philosophy that up until Torts was unseen with this club. Worked for the first half of the season and was exciting to watch.
  13. I disagree. Torts had this "old" lineup playing great, especially with Santorelli, and with Kassian coming into his own a bit this year. Even Booth looked better. Injuries sucked the life out of this team and they couldn't recover. No depth to help with the injuries either.
  14. Torts was hired by MG to give the aging, downhill sliding core of the Canucks, a so called "kick in the ass" for the 2013 - 2014 season. For the first half of the season he did that, and that fact, coupled with the GREAT play of an energetic, youthful Santorelli as the spark plug - catalyst, seemed to work quite well. That all ended with one Phoenix Coyotes players stick work which as we all know was the beginning of the end for this years Canucks and the beginning of the injury parade. To Torts credit he changed his "go get em" style drastically, to a much more boring defensive style, in hopes of salvaging the games played while dealing with MANY key injuries. Key injuries I might had that he or MG had NO replacement players for. (i.e. ZERO team depth at key positions) He also gave the dressing room back to the players a bit (as was AV's style) in the hopes that the players would respond in kind. They didn't and continued to play the same hockey that got AV fired after two frustrating early playoff exit seasons after the cup run. To Torts credit he has already admitted his mistakes this past year, and yes, relaxing and giving the room back to the players was one of them. Full marks in my books for taking the responsibility. He has also admitted he was too slow in reasserting himself after the injuries started to return. Again full marks in my books. The bottom line is, as we all know, that the current core STAYING INTACT AS IS, is a poor fit for Torts and I might add ANY NEW COACH as it's aging, stale, complacent, and needs a serious injection of energetic, skilled youth. (i.e. the way it worked until Santorelli was injured) Sure there may have been other coaches that could have coaxed this team into another playoff berth this year, but do think for a second that our Canucks as they are could have played the hockey that's been played this first round and survived? I think not and we would most likely be looking at another first round blowout and calling for the new coaches head. Personally I'm pleased with what happened this year and the fact that FINALLY this core was exposed for what it is, and FINALLY it looks like something is going to be done about it. As I've stated before, Torts was merely the vehicle that exposed this team. It's a team that doesn't like to be pushed and doesn't respond well when pushed, yet needs to be pushed to compete in the new MUCH TOUGHER conference it is now in. If you're happy watching boring, PREDICTABLE pond hockey with the current core until they're drooling in their soup, then fine, we'll fire Torts and hire Barry Trotz or some other coach that will let the core run the show. We'll just make it through the season and limp into the playoffs only to get "smoked" by any number of teams that are now far better than the Canucks are, only to sit here again year after year, blaming the coach (again) the weather, the state of the economy, and anything else we can blame for the Canucks bad play. Oooooor, maybe we can start thinking outside the box (as I hope Linden, etal are) and we can start to find a way to move a few of these so called "core" guys for some skilled, youthful return as well as interjecting some of our upcoming youth. If that's the case, then Torts deserves another year, because if there was anything positive to take from this season, it was how the younger players excelled under Torts and how the WHOLE team responded (for the better) with those younger players in the lineup. Besides. Who knows what Torts was promised by MG when he came here. Maybe now (hopefully) Linden will be able to deliver on a few of those promises. Torts is our guy for next year.
  15. I've stated my reasons for all to see throughout this thread. It appears others may agree with me as well. All I've heard from you are negative comments about my reasons for him staying, yet nothing of substance about your reasons why he should go. Maybe you could offer some? Thanks.
  16. Any particular reason why you say that? Dumping everything on Torts I assume?
  17. Hopefully Linden, etal will realize this and shake up the core a bit REGARDLESS of who ends up being the coach. As I've stated a few times before, this core was on a slippery downhill slope long before Torts was a thought for this club.
  18. Agree 100% as this core was on a downward slide 2 years before Torts was ever a thought in MG's mind.
  19. Pretty sure this summer will be eventful with or without Torts getting fired. From everything I have heard, the players are OK with another year under Torts MINUS the drama. (if that's possible ha ha) Just speculating, but if that's true, then Linden might concentrate on the MUCH NEEDED player moves and a DECENT GM rather than adding a new coach to the mix as well. Especially if the "target" GM is Jim Benning who could easily be tied up until late May or even mid June depending on how the Bruins fare. Not much time for the new GM and President to get ready for the draft, (which is uber important this year) let alone find a new coach to suit the current and possible future players.
  20. Actually he said that Torts was Mike Gillis' hire, but he (Aquilini) signed off on it, meaning he Ok'd it. He also mentioned that "that is why we are here today." None of the reporters present jumped on that statement, but a lot of radio talk show hosts (TEAM 1040 for one) and many one here took that to mean that Aquilini threw Torts under the bus and he was going to be fired at the end of the season. Two weeks later he's still here so what Aquilini meant is anybody's guess at this point in time.
