Is every player with potential getting 8x8 now?

When you see similar kinds of risky deals working out across the league with the likes of Tage Thomspon and Jack Hughes I could see why.

Hindsight is 20/20 but you could argue the Canucks should've done with the same with Petey.

  2. After this upcoming season, the only NHL d-men under contract will be Hughes, Hronek and Soucey (assuming Hronek gets re-signed, but I don't see how we don't given the assets we gave up for him).

Half of the defence core is up for grabs next season. It's up to Woo, Juulsen, Johansson, McWard, Brisebois and Hirose to show that they can take those spots. If at least 3 of these 6 guys pan out and can be NHL regulars - that would be amazing. It would be huge sign of improvement in player development and provide the Canucks a ton of cap flexibility moving forward, especially with the dreaded OEL buyout kicking in and Petey having to be re-signed.

Is it bad for me to hope for an injury or two during the season ? It would be an opportunity to ease some of these guys in and see what they can do.

This is what I fear as well.  I don't understand why he even does these optional interviews with the media.  He just creates uncertainty with the fanbase, management and ownership. The grass isn't always greener on the other side if he decides to sign somewhere else.

Wouldn't we be complaining just as much if he decided to stay completely silent...?

Let's Gooooooooooo! Whats the hold up we were supposed to have verdict in March.

    Police to Arrest Five Players

Not only will these players suffer consequences from the NHL, but they will also be arrested.

It's only a matter of days before the Ontario police file charges.

"And just last week, Quebec police sources told Radio-Canada that Ontario police were about to file charges, and that it was a matter of days.

    Martin Leclerc"

Funny how Sportsnet or TSN haven't reported on this yet...?

I think there's a difference between Petey and McDavid's situations - Edmonton are currently playoff contenders and the Canucks may not even make the playoffs next year. If you're McDavid, where else are you going to go that's going to give you a better shot at the Cup? Edmonton have a decent team so I'm surprised he wouldn't commit to them, a bit like Matthews.

The crazy thing about the current NHL is that there's not too many dynasties, and even when there are (eg. Tampa, Chicago, Pittsburgh etc. going back), they don't win many cups in a row. There's almost a constant cycle of cup winners so how can you end your current mega deal with a cup contending team like Toronto or Edmonton and then hitch your wagon to a decent-looking team when they have no more chance of winning a cup than their current team?

Even if for example right now his contract expired, who would he sign with? Carolina? Boston? Absolutely no guarantees whatsoever they win a cup let alone have a better chance than Edmonton next year - especially considering what Florida just did.

Loyalty is a thing of the past and I understand why these phenoms want to win and have to win a cup in their career, but it's a risky game to play and you just can't predict who's going to be a cup winner before signing with a new team.

Whenever teams run into this problem, they should use Corey Perry and Marian Hossa as case study examples

Right now they're 2.9M over the cap with LTIR being used so something has to give. Don't see anyone they can move to make this work. They're already such a top-heavy team and go out and acquire a bunch of solid secondary and tertiary players (Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg, Reeves) but they've gotten too greedy and now someone has to go. Surely there's a Nylander trade in the works for a decent player going back in the 3-4M range.

The following year though, 41M will be tied up between Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Reilly. That's just about half the cap. Insane when you compare it to teams like Seattle.

This is why I believe the Devils are best-positioned in the league cap-wise. Honourable mentioned to the Sabres.

Both teams have made it a habit to lock in their young players realllllyyyy early. It's a risky move, but the long-term payoff is immense.

The Leafs are screwed. This top-heavy approach is never going to work.

I get that he doesn’t want talks to be a distraction. The only part concerning was the length of the contract. Him not knowing if it’ll be long , short? Is he  Basing the length of his future here on this season ? I mean this team needs at least 2 full seasons , to contend. If it even materializes at all. Hockey players are like that fancy car/truck you bought. And learned the hard way to not get to attached to after it rusted out or got hit in an accident. Team Loyalty isn’t a thing anymore I guess?

Team loyalty has become less of a thing ever since the salary cap was put into place. Players felt like they got screwed over by the owners, so why should they feel like they should give up dollars for the sake of loyalty?

If the Canucks have another atrocious season - I can see why Petey would want to leave. He has to look out for himself at the end of the day. I don't want him to leave at all, and it would suck pretty bad if decides to do so, but that's the reality.

Our prospect pool is probably bottom 10 in the league, we're nowhere close to contending for a Cup, and the only time we've made the playoffs since 2015 was in the Covid-shortened season despite spending near the cap almost every season. That's why.

Oh no worries, I know exactly why.

The issue is that we have 2 young, superstar players that aren't going to sit around for a rebuild and have been open about it, so management's hands are forced.

I hate to be that guy, but that sounds like someone who doesn’t want to stay long term.

He put a pause on contract talks because he wants to focus on the upcoming season.   Sure.
He won’t negotiate during because he will want to focus on the season then as well.

My guess would be no deal until next year, and it will be a short one, or he pulls a Tkachuk and refuses to sign, then we are forced to traded him

My take is that he wants to bet on himself.

Have another 100+ point season to give himself leverage to push for a Mackinnon/Matthews-level contract.

Could've probably easily gotten 10.5 this summer, but he wants to see if he can push for 12.

As long as the Canucks remain competitive for a wild card sport, I think he'll stay. I'll have the same fears as you if the Canucks have an atrocious season and are bottom-feeders.

  10. This kid could turn out to be an upgraded version of Cole Caufield.

But lets look at the Canucks' needs at this time - would you rather have an upgraded Caulfield or Willander who has the potential to be a top pairing defenseman, or at the very least, a steady, but not too flashy defenseman who can eat minutes...say someone like Chris Tanev?

Having another potential Tanev definitely doesn't sound as exciting as a potentially top talented winger in Benson, but we have enough those.

McCann was compared a lot to Ryan Kesler. I was actually very impressed with McCann's skill set (I liked him a lot more than Virtanen) but it was obvious he wasn't physically mature. What is also crazy is McCann and Kesler both hit their 40 goal seasons at almost identical times.

When Kesler first came up to the NHL it was the same thing - he was so skinny and while he could skate he lacked physical size to be effective. The following year was the lockout and Kesler focused on adding size and he went from 3 goals in 33 games in the AHL to 30 in 78. The next season he was physically ready to compete in the NHL - that is the point of a farm team. Let guys get a taste of the NHL, see where their weaknesses are, improve them on the farm, and make them hungry to climb back. Throwing Jake and McCann in was so stupid.

I don't think another year in junior would have killed them. McCann needed to add size and Virtanen wasn't even that good - as an overager he had only 26 goals in 64 games. If he wasn't drafted the year before with numbers like that he probably would have been a 6th round pick.

Also when Virtanen played in the AHL he had just 19 points in 65 games with a -11. He was nowhere near ready. In fact when I watched the games he didn't even really stand out. Nylander on the other hand was like holyyy how did we pass up on this guy. But look at his development - he played in the SHL, then the AHL his D1, and then his D2 he dominated the AHL (45 points in 38 games +7) before getting called up. He was also a skinny guy who added a tonne of muscle - I've seen a lot of NHL players walking around (I used to live in Yaletown) and only Mattias Ohlund and Willie Nylander really surprised me with their physical size.

The entire Benning regime had no concept of player development.

I watched Nicklas Jensen and he was miles ahead of Virtanen but after a slow start offensively was tossed away. Brendan Gaunce was given tough minutes in the NHL and did quite well, and even after a callup where he had 3 points in 3 games with 6 hits, +3, 60% faceoffs he never saw another game with us. Jordan Schroeder put up some very solid two way numbers in the bottom 6 and was tossed away. Yet McCann and Virtanen were thrown into the NHL when not ready (and Virtanen's underlying numbers were horrific his entire time), and they made the same mistake with Hoglander and Podkolzin. Under the Benning regime it was like "lets throw guys into the NHL - if they don't succeed right away lets move on to the next one".

This new management group seems to know what they are doing. Here are a few things that I love to see:

    1. Major focus on player development. Samuelsson, Komisarek, the Sedins, Higgins all putting major work in Abbotsford and with our prospects
    2. Signing college & European free agents. These are mature prospects who don't cost any assets. They can fill out the pipeline and some many be ready to jump in, others could take time, but you aren't ruining a guy bringing him in to soon.
    3. CHL signings - there has also been a focus on bringing guys over from the CHL to develop in Abbotsford, whether they are on an AHL or two-way contract.

The only skaters we developed to become NHL players were Zack MacEwen and Jonah Gadjovich (and gave up on them anyway).

After 8 years of being in a "rebuild", having one of the worst records over that stretch, and multiple top 10 picks, the only drafted/prospect signed skaters we have locked in are Boeser, EP, and Hughes with Hoglander and Podkolzin being two NHL ready prospects. I think what Allvin and Rutherford have done in a little over a year is already miles ahead of the entire Benning era.

Yup. In the podcast I shared, McCann himself admits he was getting crushed by NHL'ers in this first season weighing in only at 170 pounds.

Our US amateur scouts have generally been good.  Same as our European amateur scouts.

Canadian amateur scouts?  Nepotism at its finest.

That's an interesting take...I did a quick scan of the Canucks draft picks. I don't think we've had a CHL prospect pan out since Horvat (Brisebois still TBD?)...

Our European and US College draft picks have been astounding though, so it really makes you wonder...

Was always annoyed we gave up on this guy, add it to the pile of things Benning botched.

I'm hoping Hoglander doesn't turn into another victim of being rushed into the NHL under Benning's management.

He certainly had a gift for finding amateur talent, but the ability to develop that talent into NHL players was questionable at best. Forsling is another example of that.

I think my concern here is people were throwing McCann under the bus saying he had a bad attitude. It felt more like rumors to me and I thought it was unfair to do this to, at the time, a 19/20 year old

Just another example of how prospects were rushed into the NHL during the Benning area. That 2014 draft with the two first round picks the Canucks had was a missed opportunity to quicken the rebuild.

Putting 19 year-olds into NHL lineups, especially in hot Canadian markets is a lot of pressure that's hard to handle for a teenager. Unless they're exceptional talents like Petey, best to make a safe bet and let them marinate in the AHL for a couple of years.

Let's hope Allvin and Rutherford don't make similar mistakes. So far, doesn't seem like they are, as we're finally starting to build some prospect depth and Abby's roster next year is certainly intriguing - let's hope this continues.

"The argument given is that the Montreal Canadiens already have Cole Caufield, and adding another top-6 forward who may be undersized and possess similar shortcomings may be one small scoring forward too many. This thought brings to mind the time when the Canadiens had decided not to draft Quinn Hughes, and placed him lower on their list simply because they already had Victor Mete as a smaller offensive defenseman." - Marc-Antoine Godin

  16. Loving the moves to sign what are essentially stop gaps on short term deals.

I think ultimately, management and coaching also want to see if any of our prospects can step up to prominent roles on the big club.

For example, have Blueger for a year and see if Karlsson can take his spot afterwards. Could any of Hirose, McWard, Woo or Johansson take Ian Cole's spot after his deal is done?

    I'm liking this.
