84% of all new cases are double vaccinated and 45% of hospitalizations are double vaccinated?

I got vaccinated to travel, but those numbers don't look great and they are getting worse.

Yes, but imagine switching the number of vaxxed and unvaxxed around. Wouldn't you agree that the number of hospitalizations would be much higher?

Warhippy pointed out the ratio between the unvaxxed and vaxxed for hospitalizations. That's the key stat. Your argument is off absolute numbers - if over 80% of the population is vaxxed, then of course they're going to outnumber the amount of unvaxxed in hospitals. You need to look at per capita numbers, the ratio and think about what the alternative would be if our vaccine numbers were much, much lower.

Keeping flights out of those countries seems like a good idea.

We already knew from the beginning of this pandemic that the virus can spread from asymptomatic individuals. Once a handful of those people get on an airplane, the spreading starts. You can always slow the spread by shutting down flights, but you're not going to stop it.

I'm sure folks in govt. know that they can't STOP Omicron from spreading, but they're trying to slow it down so hospitals don't get overwhelmed. That's the whole point of these restrictions. It's better to have everyone get infected over a longer period of time, rather than having literally thousands of people getting infected everyday - from a public health point of view.

I actually have been saying this for years. It’s time to go to the same system as the USA. That way, people pay for their own choices, not the tax payers. As such though I’d like my income tax cut back from 45% to 30% or less.

Yeah, and you'll let the next generations pay for those tax cuts when your private healthcare system either cuts out or impoverishes low income folks who end up with worse and worse health outcomes because they can't afford healthcare.

    But record numbers AND vaccinated?

Never heard to expect this from our medical leaders. We were told things like herd immunity, 2 weeks to stop the spread, vaccine passports will keep you away from the unvaccinated etc etc

Medical leaders aren't responsible for the virus mutating in other countries where vaccine rates are low and healthcare systems are much weaker than ours.

  5. Anyone know the science behind how booster shots increase protection against Omicron? Just trying to think about the mechanics, because if Omicron is more evasive of the vaccines then how does the booster increase immunity or lessen symptoms?

I'm hoping I can get my booster asap, but was just curious on how the immunology works in this scenario since Omicron looks to be more complicated to deal with.

That last quote is one of the more significant ones I took away from this press conference. Hope he's told that to Green too.

If Green's not getting fired, then he needs to listen and start adjusting strategies.

... Dickenson was OK in Dallas as a secondary PKer after Faksa.  Who knew it is easier to play against 2nd unit PP than be relied on to stop guys like McDavid and Draisaitl...

Schmidt was pretty good here too, he and Edler were our steadiest D defensively with the heaviest matchups primarily shorthanded and 5v5.  He has a different supporting cast in Winnipeg and is being used primarily in offensive situations and on the PP so his offensive numbers are obviously better.

Makes me wish we had the cap space to acquire OEL and also retain one of Edler or Schmidt - our defensive depth would look a whole lot better.

Yikes, how fragile do you have to be as a fan to not be able to admit a player from another team is playing better even when objective reality shows they are?

    .942 save %, 1.65 goals against, 4 shutouts in 9 games.

    vs.

    .918 save %, 2.59 goals against, 0 shutouts in 10 games.

One gets you Vezina votes… the other one is middle of the pack.

The correlation you make between their stats and their positions in the NHL's goaltending hierarchy is quite weak seeing as how it doesn't account for other contributing factors. E.g. defensive systems and overall play of the rest of the teams.

Your correlation only makes sense if you're trying to suggest that the Flames and Canucks defensive play are comparable, which it clearly is not for the season thus far.

  9. Unless the complaint is about letting Markstrom walk to UFA (which I think is still a bit of a weak argument), then I understand where some of the displeasure is coming from.

But if we're still harping on the fact that we kept Demko over Markstrom, y'all are insane.

First off, there's no way we were keeping both. Second, Demko's the MVP so far for the Canucks. I think we can all agree that the Canucks defence has been quite trashy so far this season and Demko is the reason as to why the defence hasn't completely collapsed.

Demko is also 5 years younger than Markstrom. Based on both goalies' play so far this year, I'm taking Demko for 5 years at $5M per over Markstrom for 6 years at $6M per every time, 10 times out of 10.

There's no way Markstrom has the same stats if he was still playing with the Canucks and our terrible defensive system.

This is what Miller would say if he read some of the hot takes in this thread.

He shows a lot of his emotion and frustration on the ice, but I also see him make at least a couple of lazy plays every game. It's time for him to walk the walk.

I remember there was a game last year where Miller completely let an opposing forward beat him wide and score a goal on Holtby who raised his arms in distraught at Miller.

Miller definitely gives off Kesler vibes, but without Kesler's intensity and work ethic....so far, hopefully that gets fixed soon.
