  1. Eagles looked rought, but Jalen Carter looked good.

I don't take too much stock into week one, but the Giants getting sloshed sets the tone for the Cowboys and Giants.

Quick turnaround to play the Vikings who must be upset about their loss.

  2. I always though Hasek, especially since what he did with Buffalo was like what Luongo was doing in Vancouver in 06-07. However, he also had lots of sub 20 save performances with the Red Wings.

Dryden is a great choice for his stretch, and Roy was another choice.

For whatever reason, I've never seen Brodeur as the best, but it probably has to do with having the perfect system and strong defense around him.

What's sad to see Canada used to have dominant Goaltending, and Defence. Not sure if it's obscene prices of goalie equipment that parents can't afford to to get kids into Goaltending. Or just the insane prices of equipment in general. Kids playing hockey is more and more out of reach for everyday Canadians.

Yes, ever since I was a fan in the early 2000s, Canada always had a great selection of goalies.

Price was a good one, but now we struggle to have a true number 1 whereas we used to have 2 or 3 #1s to choose from before.

  4. I read this article about what the trade tiers should be for our players.

It got me thinking what everyone else would think or how you think the team values the players.

    My list in the spoiler:

    Spoiler

    Untouchables:

    1) Quinn Hughes- Great contract and even better player

    2) Elias Pettersson- unless he will not re-sign

    3) Tom Wallinder- Just drafted and seems like a solid fit

    Unlikely:

    1) Hronek- we just acquired him for a mid 1st and a 2nd, so the price would be crazy high

    2) Demko- the goalie market isn't great, so you aren't going to get the value for him and we would need Silovs to step up soon

    3) Kuzmenko- Has great chemistry with Petey and just re-signed.

    Would need a great deal:

    1) Silovs- just had a great tournament and has improved in the AHL. Looks to be a future back-up in the near future and possible starter, but would move for a great young player in a needed position

    2) JT Miller- He has a big contract and a trade would likely lead to a different direction, but would move for a great package

    3) Podkolzin- I expect more progression from the young winger, but would consider moving for position of need

    On the block (low value):

    1) Conor Garland- Makes some great plays and puts up points 5-on-5, but has a long deal for an undersized winger and seemingly has negative value

    2) Brock Boeser- Pricy winger, but short-term. I would rather keep him than trade him away for peanuts, especially if Garland is traded

    3) Tyler Myers- Right-handed d-man with only 1 year left. A good bet to trade at the deadline or keep for one last year (playoffs?)

    Trade Sweeteners:

    1) Hoglander- A creative winger, but has value to be added to deals. I'd rather keep him, but see him being a desired add for other teams

    2) Klimovich- Still young and seems to be progressing well. I wouldn't trade him unless the player we got back was young

Other notables (don't see being traded, but also not likely to be targeted)

    1) Beauvillier- Only 1 year left, so maybe at the deadline for depth, but don't see anyone calling soon

    2) Mikheyev- Looked good despite injury, but I don't think he draws interest and no need to deal him

    3) Dakota Joshua- Maybe a minor player to include, but seems to be a coach favourite, but also likely not to be targeted in a significant deal

Surprised they go after Domi too but now that might be the best forward group in the league. They're just 2M over the cap (including LTIR, without it like 8M lol), their defence is pretty shaky and thin and boy is their goalie pile a mess but look at this group right now:

    Bertuzzi - Matthews - Marner

    Knies - Tavares - Nylander

    Jarnkrok - Domi - Reeves

    Lafferty - Kampf - Robertson

    Muzzin - Klinberg

    Reilly - Brodie

    Liljegren - McCabe

With Muzzin in the fold they're well over the cap. Samsonov isn't even signed yet. Someone's got to give, surely it's Murray but even then they're a bit over. They could obviously trade Nylander but then they really do become a one line team.

Honestly I don't see this team going very far, they are built for the regular season being so top-heavy and reliant on the PP. Bertuzzi is a nice addition but that defence is just so thin, especially without Muzzin. Look at the 4 conference finalists - big mean tough defencemen. At least Allvin identified this and got us two of the biggest boys in free agency. Adding Klingberg to an already-weak defence is odd but seems to be the Leaf's way - hope they can score their way out of their problems. Crazy to think that their entire season rests on their only good shutdown defenceman's health - Muzzin.

Bertuzzi also did very well with the Bruins in the playoffs, so I think they're looking at playoff performers.

Nylander could get traded for a dman and/or picks to balance their defense.

  6. This is great for Calgary, as they can fire sell some really good assets and rebuild. That Huberdeau contract isn't even bad if they are rebuilding.

Calgary can sell players from every position and get 1st rounders, 2nd rounders, prospects, etc...

At least that's what I would, just like Winnipeg (but winnipeg doesn't have as much unless they trade Pionk and Conner).

Soucy will come cheaper in term and cap hit compared to Graves, so I rather go with the cheaper option as long as the term and cap hit are reasonable. We could go the trade route to get a D also, maybe someone like Edmundson out of Montreal in a deal around Beauvillier??

I'd go cheaper, but it depends how much you save versus the value of the player.

Pretty easy run for Vegas. Didn't run into anyone everyone thought was a contender before the playoffs.

That's a huge part of Cup runs.

Florida had a crazy route to get there, but Vegas was pretty easy since the West sucks and they didn't have to play a healthy Avs.

The 2012 Kings had an easy run too, beating a Canucks team without Daniel, then a Fluke Blues team, then the Coyotes where Smith was their star player, and finally New Jersey in the Finals.

Part of the luck is who you play; Vancouver likely beats Philadelphia or New Jersey in the Cup Finals, but were off a year for both and got Boston.

Edler had a bomb for a few years that was at least as hard as Salo's, but not as accurate. Ehrhoff's was quite amazing, but that was a short time period. Some other good shots from the blue line, but I'm not sure any really stand out.

Ehrhoff has a nice slapper, but it was his ability to skate and make good pinches (followed by a wrist shot) that worked well for him.

I'd like to see Hughes skate closer and wrist it rather than just flub muffins to the net.

Yeah, I've been on the Hanifin bandwagon for a few months.  I'd give up quite a bit to acquire him.  It would really solidify our defence core.

I'd love me some Hanifin; would be the perfect partner for Hronek.

Hanifin is a big LD who can do it all and isn't on a long-term deal.

I haven't been the biggest fan of Weegar, as he struggled in last year's playoffs with Florida and I think he's a bit over-rated, but he is a RD which makes him so attractive.

Either way, I doubt Calgary trades a d-man to us.

Now just two more NHL stay at home defensemen and the Canucks are set.

    Hughes - Severson

    OEL - Hronek

    Mayfield - Schenn/Woo

    Hirose/Juulsen

I'd love to add a snarly guy like Bieksa.

I remember Bieksa struggled with consistency on defense early on, but then built up to be a good partner for a stay-at-home Hamhuis.
