This is why truculence, and trading your future for a WINGER is not the way to go.
You build through the draft (Something Toronto seems to constantly not want to do), and build from the net out.
Having a superstar winger alone won't cut it. (Ask Washington with Ovechkin)
Toronto's biggest problem I think is scouting. For a team that's got a massive amount of OHL clubs in driving distance. I can't believe they don't scout better.
You need solid centre's and then provide talented wingers. If you build up your muscles in your arms but don't work on your shoulders, back muscles, stomach muscles you still don't have power, you just look like Popeye.
Centres dish the puck, set up plays and score. You also need quality d-men, and timely goaltending to round out the whole team.
I think the problem with most Canadian NHL teams is we don't have the best GM's in the business. Because fans want results, teams sacrifice building long term, for short term results. This is why Philly has a hard time rebuilding. Because their owner is impatient.
I guess for the exception of Edmonton. I really don't know what their game plan is to get better. At least they drafted Nurse. That might be the first big step in building a better club. That, and picking up Scrivens. Maybe they just need a GM that's not an ex-Oiler and get a new perspective on building a winner.
