  1. Wow. I was expecting at least 1.2 million. 1 year = show me deal. Hopefully, he can take the next step and earn a hefty raise next season!
  2. Just Depth. Both rosters, Canucks and Comets, will need to be filled. Seems like a Utica signing that will fill in when injuries occur, but we'll see.
  3. I would have been pissed if the Canucks gave Markstrom and Tanev the deals that they ended up with.
  4. Hmm. I disagree. Judging by the moves and non-moves he's made so far this offseason, he seems reluctant to go over the cap, and be in a position where he is forced to dump salary. I think that, more than any misstep or mismanagement, is why Toffoli was not resigned. Pure speculation of course, as I have zero insight into the inner workings of the Canucks and their management.
  5. I agree, except that they really need an RHD. Fantenburg is a lefty, as are Edler, Benn, Schmidt (can play the right), Hughes, Rathbone, Juolevi, and a handful of other prospects. Tyler Myers is the only experienced Canucks defensemen with a right handed shot. Koekkoek also appears to be a leftie that can play the right side, so not sure he is ideal. I hope they find room to resign Fantenburg, but I'd like to see another RHD added as well.
  6. Agreed. Nothing wrong with making an offer - especially when it was likely made before the Schmidt trade. Glad it worked out the way it did!
  7. Perhaps they can unite Pearson and Toffoli in Montreal! Pearson and Baertschi for Gallagher!
  8. Pavol Demitra, Ryan Miller, Manny Malhotra. Also, Naslund and the Sedin's were the top UFA's in their unrestricted years, and they re-signed with the Canucks. That counts too! I agree, "never" isn't at all accurate, especially since the OP asked why we're never "IN" on the top free agents. I would argue that the Canucks are usually "in", but don't always come out with the deal/player, as there are likely 30 other teams that want the best players in the league too.
  9. Are you sure he is able? I know that scheduling is messed up due to Covid, but my understanding is that he will not be able to join the Canucks until the following season due to an agreement between the NHL and KHL.
  10. Nah. It's only one more year, and Sutter is a decent player. Ride it out, maybe trade him at the deadline for a pick.
  11. Agreed. It's tough watching players sign with other teams, but this offseason, the Canucks management have done a good job (so far). I, like others, have been critical of some of Benning's past signings. Fortunately, these bad signings (Eriksson, Sutter, Baertschi) will be off the books in 1-2 seasons. These contracts absolutely hampered the teams ability to improve, but realistically, most teams are dealing with the same issues. Losing Toffoli hurts a little, as I think his contract with Montreal is very good value. Stetcher's as well. There are at least 2-3 months until the seaon starts, so there is a lot of time to fill out the roster and (hopefully) shed a bad contract or two!
  12. Damn... My spidey senses must have been in overdrive yesterday! Lol. I didn't think it would happen that quickly!
  13. Fair enough. I’m of the opinion that we did need an upgrade with our rhd. While I would have been happy with the contract that Stetcher ended up getting, I think Tanev’s was too rich for the Canucks, and that there were better options out there. Of course they could end up in a worse position if they are unable to get suitable replacements... We’ll see... Time will tell, but I think there will be a period of time within the next few months were teams are looking to shed salary, and the Canucks can hopefully take advantage a la the Ehrhoff trade from last decade.
  14. Not to nitpick here, but, how can you possibly know that?
  15. Yeah, I was being a smart a$$. They may not be able to sign a player that is better than Tanev, but I'm glad they didn't give him the contract he ended up getting in Calgary. Toffoli is a little more difficult to swallow, but it's a cap world, and they have painted themselves into a corner with some bad contracts. In a year or two, those will be gone. If they have to take a step back this season, I'm OK with that. Of course, the season is months away from starting up, and a lot of things can happen in that time.
  16. Getting a little panicky for sure, but I for one, am glad to see a little prudence this offseason. I just wish it had been there in past seasons to avoid some of the poor signings. At the end of the day, looking at Cap Friendly, the majority of teams have some unpleasant contracts. The good news for the Canucks is that their bad contracts are only a year or two from being off the books. If the choice is to cut costs and take a little step back, I'm OK with that. Of course, everything could change with a trade and/or signing in the next few months, so I'm doing my best to practice patience.
  17. Yeah. That Pietrangelo guy is a real bargain I hear you, but there are still players out there and... I do think there is a trade in the works. Time will tell.
