  1. Never played for them that I remember. Only the North Stars and the Blackhawks. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=1994
  2. That's a different argument though. I still remember when the Blackhawks had Dirk Graham (who? exactly) as their captain when they had players who could put up more points. Did that make him have more value or a better player compared to the people that did score though? No, not really. He may well become a Selke trophy winning player with good point production who is very valuable but then again MacKinnon may become Tavares or Crosby. Which would you rather have? They both have a likelihood of reaching their respective potentials, but if they do clearly one is still at a higher level than the other.
  3. Considering we don't have Horvat's sophomore season to use as a comparison yet, it's what we have to work with. We can certainly revisit this all next year! They'll each have value in areas that might not match the other. To say Horvat will be more valuable defensively is a reasonable statement. To say he'll be more valuable overall (especially on a team that looks like it'll be lacking a top end player of MacKinnon's quality) is much less defensible. I provided the link in the same post with the chart, just pick 'compare players' then select the players and seasons you want to compare for each. To be honest they're pretty close anyway. MacKinnon might not have scored as much last season but he actually improved his possession and chance related numbers over what he had in his rookie season.
  4. I have questions about what colour you think the sky is. Honestly.
  5. Well, I didn't want to blow him out of the park by comparing MacKinnon's rookie season to Horvat's. That would have been closer to shooting fish in a barrel. Huh? Neither are 18 if that's what you're getting at.
  6. At the risk of scaring him off further with more numbers ("but intangibles!") I've attached an interesting comparison on MacKinnon and Horvat's performances last year (which was a sophomore slump for MacKinnon vs Horvat's breakout year). Horvat was only clearly better than MacKinnon in blocks, faceoffs and goals per 60 minutes of playing time, with a smaller advantage in hits. MacKinnon was far better on takeaways and Corsi related metrics, but also better than Horvat on points and assists per 60 and penalty differential. http://war-on-ice.com/bombay-scores.html
  7. ^^ But he doesn't like McCann, so scratch that part.
  8. Sure, and intangibles only show when you watch. Well, I've watched, and MacKinnon is certainly better than Boeser (which is where we started) and I'd also say better than Horvat. Unless you can show what you mean with some video evidence then I'm still much, much closer to the "I'd trade Horvat and Boeser for MacKinnon" camp than I am to you saying both can be or are better individually than MacKinnon right now. I'm not even going to get started on the "only Ekblad will be a more impactful player than Virtanen from that draft" argument.
  9. Well, he did have 38 points in 64 games as a 19 year old. I'm not sure what more you can ask than that. You can't just say "but intangibles" or "he's a negative player" without showing us something to better quantify that.
  10. There are about 700 players in the league, how many do you think are so good offensively that they can afford to be kept on a team despite being a defensive liability? If you can think of 70, that's 10%. If you can think of 35, that's 5%. Maybe only 1% is too low, but it's not by a lot. But your opinion of MacKinnon having a very negative effect isn't accompanied by anything resembling proof. MacKinnon has a positive giveaway/takeaway ratio, the same with his offensive zone start and finish rate (which is better than Duchene's). Even if he had a -7 last year his quality of competition is very high and he led the Avs in Corsi/Corsi Rel. To try and rate Boeser close to or even above MacKinnon just isn't realistic - especially when Boeser has proven nothing to date while MacKinnon has. I'd be extremely surprised (and pleased) to see Boeser become a better 'star goal scorer' than MacKinnon while also bringing a better defensive game.
  11. Boeser may have a better pure shot but MacKinnon's work ethic and high end ability makes him a better bet to succeed in an offensive position than Brock in my opinion. Players who succeed in today's NHL can't be a defensive liability 99% of the time, but MacKinnon does not fall in the liability category. If nothing else I'd rather have the player already making a good impact in the NHL at a young age than a player who projects to be pretty good but hasn't played a pro game yet.
  12. Maybe, but Boeser also has less a chance of being as multi-dimensional at a high level as MacKinnon.
  13. Good bump! My nephew took a few shots when we were visiting earlier this summer:
  14. Uh, because he'll already be over in the KHL for their season?
  15. He'll already be prepping for his college season at that point. He's not coming whether he would have to pay or not.
  16. Well, there you go! More reason to watch this year.
  17. Yup, it's just for unsigned junior drafted players that they'd reenter the draft or become UFA. If they're playing pro overseas their NHL drafted team would still hold their rights since they couldn't sign until their overseas contract was done, unlike an amateur player. I'm not sure if we'll see his KHL team in that tourney, would be easier to see him though.
  18. Zhukenov won't be in Utica most likely at that point. He's in junior for sure this coming year and I'd guess he does one more season after that before going pro. Maybe he really surprises and shows he's ready, but I wouldn't rush him.
  19. Do you mean like the world championships? Probably not. He's too old for the age grade tourneys.
  20. NIKITA TRYAMKIN NOT THINKING ABOUT JUMP TO THE NHL I wasn't surprised that he wouldn't come over early, but it might be a surprise that he'd consider extending his contract if they offered. That might mean for the right money versus what he'd earn here in the AHL, or that he's just not closing that door, but we'll have to see what happens.
  21. There isn't 'always someone injured' - you can't rely on that to save you from making roster decisions. If we don't make other moves then maybe Kenins goes down, but if Kenins deserves the spot more than Virtanen, do you still keep Virts for 9 games? Why would you if he doesn't show he deserves it?
  22. Yeah, not feeling great today so kinda coasting through. Fixed. Who do you waive to give him those 9 games?
  23. We can bring it back to Virtanen, sure. I don't think he'll be that negatively impacted by another year in junior if he doesn't make the NHL. So long as the Hitmen use him appropriately, he'll be fine. EDIT: apparently tired today.
