  1. That's a simplistic statement. It's like asking why Virtanen and McCann weren't immediately slotted into the lineup when they came to Utica, and of course they weren't because there were players in Utica's bottom six playing very important roles. That's how Virtanen got his shot though, when there injuries in the bottom six and the Comets needed a winger who could forecheck, skate fast and play the body. That he took that opportunity and excelled at it (despite not contributing goals) is why he's been moving up from the bottom 6 to the top 6. That's not getting the opportunity served to him, that's him making the most of a chance.
  2. Man, if leaving the tying goal until the 80th minute (off a penalty no doubt) isn't drama I don't know what is. EDIT: and of course Montreal scores as I post that.
  3. It depends on what you consider 'talk'. Certainly we were talking about that here but it was an unsubstantiated rumour started by one person in the media (was it Dreger?) that Benning refuted. Reinhart was the rumoured target though rather than Ekblad. Whatever we were offering, Tallon didn't bite.
  4. I'd like to see a little more progress, or at least have him look more comfortable in his NHL play by this point. I wouldn't be worried if he wasn't winning games, but for all the projections he's had and what we have seen in lower levels I have a little trouble with just how much of a disconnect it seems to be when he plays in the NHL. Maybe it's all mental, and he's a good goalie, but I'm not in a rush to say he is and will be batter than Lack until he proves a little more. And that's coming from one of the people who were on board with a Lack/Markstrom combo last summer instead of signing Miller.
  5. Patrick Kane? I agree, that level of player is very hard to come across - for a second round pick or otherwise! Oh, wait... you were talking about Evander Kane since he's a big tough forward, but trying to discount the availability of smaller, highly skilled players by choosing some who have yet to be exceptional. That can be said for big, tough forwards as well when they haven't quite panned out to the ceiling people were expecting. Nylander and Ehlers won't be available for the same value we spent on Baertschi unless something goes sideways. Certainly no one's projecting Sam Bennett's value - at 18 or otherwise - to drop from the level it's been at since the draft and he's a smaller forward. Meanwhile CBJ is pretty happy to part with Rychel right now (they might be wishing they'd picked Theodore now) and Mantha has had a less than exciting season in Detroit's system. So it's not all roses for the big guys.
  6. I agree on the limitations for the ceilings of Hutton's potential D partners, but they'd be good options during his development while he gets to his ceiling. And I'd rather that than considering Cederholm as a suitable partner for him to play with at most of the levels they'll both encounter.
  7. Hutton/Clendening could be a solid option considering our current prospects, or Subban could be someone who really matches with him. He could also be matched with a Tanev or Corrado to give a more responsible 5 on 5 presence. Cederholm doesn't make much sense, although Tryamkin's style of play (and even Pedan's) as bigger, but good skating defenceman with shots could work. Cederholm isn't as known for his skating or his shot, but would be more of a strictly stay at home type that probably won't have much impact on any sort of offensive pairing at the NHL level. Maybe as a PK type of pair, but again they play the same side.
  8. D who likes to skate and carry the puck, and is an offensively minded, two-way type of defenseman.
  9. From the Comets Round 3 playoffs notebook today: http://www.uticacomets.com/round-3-playoff-notebook/ Kept the second part in in case it came up, but the numbers after a loss are pretty damn good. There's no question he has the mental toughness to bounce back, even if he doesn't always bounce back in a game after a bad start.
  10. For sure, and as I said it'd just be the cherry on top if he started scoring as well in his first pro stint (especially since it's the playoffs and the Comets don't score a tonne).
  11. So you'd prefer he sits in the press box a fair amount to delay that 9 games and then goes to the WJHC? And before you say, "but Bo did it," Bo had some time off for an injury and then had a conditioning stint in the AHL to offset his NHL time. So are you hoping Virtanen has an injury that takes him out of the lineup? It is a bonus he's been doing the right things in his Utica stint, and the only way it could be better is if he was producing as well. It's a good sign for next year, but we'll see how it all works out.
  12. Waivers is not job security, and we'll probably be letting Matthias go for that reason. But there's the balance of of security because you were here last year and security because your a top prospect and they moved a bunch of players to accommodate you. Until we move someone, he's in tough for a spot as well. If we do make space, Virtanen would then be taking that spot for the 9 games if that's really all we want to do with him.
  13. The '9 games' is overrated by far too many on here. We're likely to have a roster full of waiver eligible players next season, so who would we waive to make room for Virtanen? Of course, if Benning thinks he's been good enough in preseason to potentially make it, I think he gets the chance to play regardless of the number of games. He won't just get 9 games because people want to see him in an NHL game though.
  14. I disagree that Miller is that marketable. He's still a good goalie, but on a downward arc in his career and with a pretty significant cap hit. The goalie market has never yielded much value anyway, but add in a slowly moving cap, a number of younger goalies likely being available and Miller's NTC limiting possible partners and it's not particularly easy to move him unless perhaps we retain cap and don't expect much of a return. That's not to say Markstrom has more value, but we'd only be limited by which teams would want him so that increases the possibilities. He's not going to garner a high return though, and Lack would earn a little more that way but it's not like we have teams who are in a bidding war for goalies right now considering the options available.
  15. He just signed a 3 year deal and he's only an RFA at the end of that, so we'd still have to trade for or offer sheet him if we wanted to get him. He'll likely sign another deal from there that would put it at probably 4-6 years before he had a choice to come here as a UFA. Once this current deal was signed at more than a year or two it was almost forgone that he stays in Columbus barring a trade.
  16. Ryan Johansen was just on TSN1040 and had this to say about Baertschi: Just in case anyone wants the context around the quote: http://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040-i-1410/johansen-columbus-a-hidden-gem-in-nhl-1.286714
  17. If we do, it would likely mean Virtanen's back in the press box.
  18. Not a bad game from him, tried to keep it simple but did end up rushing/forcing/chasing things a little. That's to be expected to a point where he's not played in a little but and it adjusting to the bigger, faster AHL.
  19. He's an effective player even if he isn't flashy. This has been a very good first year in pros for him.
  20. And yet that doesn't make your statement correct. There are also people who worry about his output this year and just how high his ceiling is, irrespective of what Nylander and Ehlers have done. Don't forget there's also people who are Nylander and Ehlers haters and have tried to bring them down to pump up Virtanen. That's even more confusing since the stats don't support it, but it doesn't mean everyone who thinks Virtanen is our top prospect and will excel in the NHL are all Nylander/Ehlers haters.
  21. Incorrect. Also incorrect. No prospect is ever guaranteed 9 games unless they impress at camp and are really testing the team to keep him up full time. If he's not ready, then they'll send him back after preseason rather than have to waive someone else (and risk losing them) just to give him those 9 games.
  22. The new turf for the Women's World Cup goes in May 17.
  23. And it's postponed because of... well, this:
