Seems to have a nice, all-around skill set. Maybe not a ton of NHL-level upside but he could develop into something decent.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if he did another year, but I guess it depends on what they think the team will look like next year. If the young players they brought in could be strong enough next year to compete then it could be enticing. But then again, helping the Comets to a Calder Cup could also be pretty enticing.

That was a terrible draft year for Nonis (White in the first round) but at least we didn't draft Hamill with the 8th overall like the Bruins (Couture was the next pick at 9th overall). Lots of teams passed on Subban for him to get to the 43rd overall pick. But then, this is the Virtanen thread isn't it? Not a defenceman drafting thread, or a Baertschi vs Jensen thread.
-
Pretty good. EDIT: I wanted to leave it just at that, but I guess I can go look up how he's doing for you. Also, he has more points than Jensen and Shinkaruk currently.
-
Our other option at this point is some combination of Burrows or Higgins. Maybe next year someone else steps up (Virtanen makes the team, Shinkaruk or Jensen impress) but if we aren't looking at Baertschi there then we're using a forward that would probably be better suited as a top 9/bottom 6 player. Pick your poison.
-
And if he doesn't? Or if Nylander/Ehlers/etc. do? We're well past worrying about who we picked, don't try to be smug about it.
-
Yup, it's not going to happen.

This would be a season where Benning can put some weight behind his comments that he'll make room for younger players if they deserve it. If he doesn't open up space beforehand to allow for Kenins, Baertschi, Corrado, Clendening, etc. to be in the line up then he could certainly use Kenins in Utica as a short term move while he tries to make a deal with another roster player to free up space. I'm not that concerned. I think Corrado's already proven he can be an NHL'er, and Vey is at least a good depth guy who will continue to develop. Clendening has been just fine as well and Baertschi could well prove he deserves a shot before we end the year. Benning could move guys like Higgins and Weber to make room for these young players, then have free agents come in on PTOs at camp to push the youngsters. He could even sign free agents (or even re-sign Weber) and then not be worried if they get picked up on waivers when the young players do well. I don't have any significant worry that our newly waiver eligible players won't be good enough to deserve a spot come October. But here's the highlights from last nights Comets game: Baertschi with the 1st assist on Sanguinetti's goal, but he looked to be very involved on a number of chances.
-
With Baertschi needing waivers and Kenins stepping up this year, moving a left winger somewhere is a reasonable guess. Perhaps they move a RW and then push a LW to the opposite side (or to center as in Matthias' case) but the simplest answer is likely the best. But good to see him get and assist last night on Sanguinetti's goal, hopefully he fits in well with Green's system and does very well to end the year. He didn't score on his shootout attempt though so he's snot perfect!

That's a poor analogy. A better analogy is if a player was getting straight A+'s in grade 11 that they should get to bypass grade 12 with a test in the fall and then go straight to university if they do well enough on that. But Jake isn't getting straight A's even in your analogy. If you look at someone like Ehlers in his draft +1 year (or even Marner in his draft year) he's definitely getting an A++ in points production. Virtanen is more of an A-/B+ by comparison. Of course there is a lot more to that report card (physical play, defensive awareness, etc.) where Virtanen may be ahead of Ehlers but it points out that Virtanen isn't necessarily a slam dunk to skip a grade and jump right to uni. The value in another year of Junior is reduced, but there's still value there - particularly if he's on a competitive team - so if he doesn't fit in the NHL I'd rather he goes back. That becomes even more true with our potential log jam next year as we have more young players become waivers eligible (i.e. Baertschi, Corrado and Clendening) as well as others who have already grabbed a spot or could challenge as well next year (i.e. Kenins or Jensen). But common sense tells us to watch what offseason moves are made (trades, signings) and then who does what at camp to deserve that spot.

This. Any other argument is pretty much moot unless it involves significant compensation to the CHL team so they can still be a strong development option for the majority of other players not falling into the in between category. If they can't keep star players around when they don't make the NHL, then they can't draw fans. If they can't draw fans, then they can't afford to keep operating at the same level. If they can't afford to keep operating, then they can't develop young Canadian hockey players.

Dare to dream?

I doubt it, Ehlers just surpassed Drouin's consecutive games point streak record (currently at 33 consecutive games with 73 points scored during that streak). Nylander hasn't been that impressive with 9 points in 14 games, but that's not bad at all for an 18 year old playing in the AHL. Why keep bringing it up when all the players are doing well in their own way?
-
I've always said he has a better chance at playing up the lineup as a wing, where he might not have the same opportunity at center. We'll see how his development goes, and how it goes for our other center prospects.
-
That's what's been fueling his run so far, hard work and a little luck to get pucks near his stick on rebounds. He's been doing lots of good things as well, don't get me wrong, but if that puck luck dries up then we're bound to have some of the naysayers coming back nice and strong. He'll round out his game with some skill, and I think 20 is within reach for sure. I'm hesitant to say 30 but as I've said I'm happy to sit back and enjoy the ride as he develops.

^^ Exactly, and then there will be 7 ongoing threads about him in CT because people just have to create their own. Atleast with this one the discussion is all in one place.Or it should be but there are already Horvat threads in CT anyway,so why people are complaining I don't know. Because we're all saying "Bo Horvat the prospect" in every post we make about him here? We're discussing him as a roster player currently, and at least this sub-forum is more closely managed than CT. All this'll do is make a new thread in CT that'll quickly get replaced with another whenever anything remotely interesting happens because posters in CT can't figure out how to bump a thread instead of creating a new one. It had to be done but it isn't really a solution in my opinion. To be fair, this is a pretty small sample size of production he'll most likely regress from. It's great to see, but this is more than we should be able to expect from him at this point. I'm anxiously waiting to see what his consistency is like in the next 1-3 years.
-
C'mon man, 6 posts before yours is the explanation. If you don't like it, go post in the other Horvat threads in Canucks Talk. By the way, they don't move the prospect talk threads to the main Canucks Talk forum, they just lock them in the prospects directory and continue with any new threads that are created.

As my sig would suggest, I'm a fan. It'll be nice to see him succeed and hopefully it's here.

At the 10th game played the ELC kicks in regardless of if he's sent back and at the 40th game played it puts them one year closer to UFA status. The Oilers had already passed the 10 game ELC mark and used the available time they had left to see what he could do. I believe they sent him down after 37 games played. I think the Oilers had a hand in helping along a trade at the junior level for him, but wouldn't put it as strong-arming them. I don't really know though, but since the Oilers didn't even let Draisaitl go to the WJHC (which wouldn't have affected their ability to bring him back to the NHL if they wanted to) it was pretty clear they were keeping him up for more reasons than just that they didn't like Prince Albert's team. Emergency call ups are only available if both the NHL team and the AHL farm team are at risk of going below the minimum 18 man roster. If the NHL team needed a player and calling up an AHL'er would put the farm team below the 18, then they have recourse to recall a junior player. I believe that's only during the period of cover needed though, not for the rest of the season if they play well enough, but I'm not completely sure on that part.

Tryamkin and Forsling are players overseas playing pro as well. There are lots of young players in the European pro leagues, but not all of them are that special or tearing it up. Virtanen might learn something over there, but in general it's a non-starter. That is directly related to the NHL/CHL agreement though, and that agreement doesn't cover European teams. There's a different agreement there where it's basically that players are under contract with the CHL so anyone wanting to play in a pro league would have to pay to break that contract. The only exception is the NHL with their special agreement since the goal of the CHL as a development league is to prepare players for the NHL. It'd be just like us trying to get Tryamkin to play over here next year (assuming they don't drop contracts themselves with their current economic issues).

Malkin still gets booed for that here, heard it last night. Horvat, however, was certainly getting lots of cheers.

As I've said every time it's been suggested (and it's been suggested for any of our top prospects stuck between NHL and junior) is that while it's possible, the Jensen situation was a one off where the transfer agreements between North America and Europe had expired and we took advantage. What would normally happen is if any player wanted to go play in Europe because they were too good for junior but not good enough for the NHL, the European team they go to would have to pay a transfer fee to the junior team for their loss. Generally it's not worth it for the European team so it very rarely happens. It's very unlikely to happen again for almost any prospect unless we see that same situation crop up again where the transfer fees aren't applicable.
