  1. And yet you ignored two players Gillis had drafted that were full time NHL'ers last year (i.e. not playing junior, college overseas or the AHL). If you don't want to talk trades, signings, etc, you still have to pay attention to the actual drafted players. Ah, but I thought you were ignoring trades. I guess not then, eh? So Kassian's back in the mix as a player Gillis wanted to draft but couldn't as he went before Hodgson. The trade just fixed that.
  2. Just to be clear, I didn't change the proposal just displayed it by who gives up what versus who gets what. Of course the proposal changed at least once from the one I originally saw, so it got a bit muddled, but I'm not commenting on how much sense the actual pieces make, just value.
  3. Winner winner, chicken dinner. I guess dominating them physically didn't help us win... Uh, Schroeder was with the team all year. Just because he was injured isn't Gillis' fault. Then there's Hodgson, who had played with the team regularly and is now replaced by another pick from the same draft class in Kassian. You can't just ignore facts because you want to.
  4. *sigh* I guess we'll just run down to the big skilled guy store and find a guy that can score at the same level with some of the other top players in the league. Never mind that some of those top players are actually smaller, skilled guys, but whatever. Nope, didn't skip anything. How had our offence been during those first rounds and against our division this year? Did our top offensive players - you know, the ones that are 6'2" or whatever - have really great offensive stats in those games that we lost? How many goals did we score in the finals in 2011? So that game this year where we took a physical stand and basically beat up the Kings, remind me, did we win or lose that game?
  5. Ah, another part he changed from the original... Garrison was going to Florida previously.
  6. Part of the same reason why Schroeder dropped. But then they're both players at 5'9"/5'8", and we're talking about players who are 5'11", so 2-3 inches difference, and then talking about players with size at 6'0" to 6'2", 1-3 inches difference. So weight was brought up versus height earlier, and that's maybe a bit different but if Nylander is 180 lbs now for instance, and people aren't worried about size with someone like Dal Colle, who was at 171 lbs prior to the combine but in a 6'2" frame, then why are we worried about weight with Nylander? Neither of the players we're talking about are so much smaller that they're in the same category as Petan or others that have obviously fallen due to their size.
  7. Basically my thoughts. I haven't seen people saying we should draft more Brandon Reid's with our pick, nor have I seen people saying we should draft more Taylor Pyatt's. That is too simplistic a statement to say size is a strategy.
  8. And yet we didn't lose games this year because of size. It was because we played poorly and/or didn't have enough skill. That those teams are big is relatively immaterial to the reason why we lost those games. Would I like the team to be bigger? Sure, but not at the expense of skill. Am I going to draft based on skill regardless of size? No, but when there's a significant advantage for the skill level available I will. Risk compared to potential would be other factors, but that's a different question.
  9. Except we were the bigger team on average and out hit them leading up to and including the finals. Put away the whistles, sure, but they'd didn't manhandle us anywhere but the scoreboard. Size hasn't ever been our issue, and it's not like it magically is now.
  10. Let's rearrange that (I was going to say to show how bad it is but had looked at the original version). Philly gives: Schenns, Laughton, Gostisbhere, 17th Vancouver gives: Kesler, Garrison, Corrado, 6th and 36th overall Florida gives: 1st, Jovanovski Florida gets both Schenns plus a 6th overall. Philly gets Jovo as a cap dump, Kesler, Corrado and a 2nd (albeit a high one). Vancouver gets the 1st overall, the 17th, Laughton and Gostisbhere. Philly and Van give up the most, and Florida easily wins the deal.
  11. He needs to improve his effort defensively (and even then I don't think he'll be near a premier defensive player) but I've mentioned I don't know how many times about watching Paul Kariya in the BCHL and all he did was float looking for a breakout pass.
  12. If you're trying to evaluate players based on who hit the net more or scored more, then it does mean a fair amount. Certainly if people want to slag Garrison but not Edler (or whoever) but fail to base that in reality then that's their own issue.
  13. Was that even English? But you don't have to send a player to juniors if they weren't playing in juniors when they were drafted. Cederholm is an example of a player we drafted outside of juniors, but chose to go play there to better develop his game. Nylander is an example that could do any of the three options (juniors, AHL, Sweden), again, because he wasn't playing in juniors when he was drafted.
  14. I know you're better than to be so absolute. You don't have to go full fanaticism either, but I think there's a real chance they qualify him at least and if he agrees to the terms we give him a shot in camp. If he doesn't work, we can always put him on waivers. If he clears, great for Utica. If not, then we haven't lost any more than what we would have if we hadn't qualified him at all.
  15. Kind of what we already knew, but just something different from arguing back and forth over our favourite picks.
  16. He's helping others score? Controlling the puck with a good possession game in the offensive zone? Using his speed and hockey IQ to create turnovers? He doesn't have to be a wrecking ball to be effective outside of goals scored.
  17. You certainly want someone to put the puck in the net, but you also need someone to set up those players. They aren't all going to be individual efforts driving to the net or tap in rebounds. But your position is well known. So well known in fact I wouldn't have replied if you hadn't been continuing to parrot the same line about his '1 goal' and ignoring any other points he may have contributed.
  18. You mean when he played in youth leagues in Canada, or the US? I'm Canadian and have been a proponent of drafting Nylander at #6, what 'explanation' do you have for that? I'd like to get Reinhart, Ekblad or Bennett as Canadians, or even Draisaitl as a German. Doesn't matter where they're from so long as they're the best hockey player. 7 points overall after you don't omit he also had 6 assists as a 17/18 year old. And 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists in 27 games) in the J20 the previous season, 15 goals and 12 assists in 35 games in the Allsvenskan this year, plus the 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) in the seven WJC-18 games, etc. But I'm sure I've seen Patty Kane bang in a rebound in front of the net before or make a hit/defensive play too. I've seen Higgins lay out Chara with a hit and he's only 6' tall. I've seen Keith Ballard fight Corey Perry, Colin Fraser and Justin Abdelkader. I've even seen Nylander put in a loose puck at the side of the net in the World Juniors this year, does that mean we should draft more skilled players because we don't need those strong, defensive guys? Well, Kassian plus Bieksa, Stanton, Lain, Matthias, Archibald, Sestito, etc. is enough maybe. Some young names in there to carry us forward, but maybe not quite the same yet with our top end skill so there's certainly reason to look at drafting for talent more so than size.
  19. Yeah, Handzus worked well for them the previous season, but hasn't been the same this year. I don't see them bringing him back. Leddy had lots of promise, and it was certainly great to get him in return for Cam Barker before he fell off a cliff, but hasn't stepped up that much in a strong Chicago roster.
  20. You just copy/pasting/posting this same thing in every thread? i.e.: http://forum.canucks.com/topic/357115-6th-pick-2014-nhl-entry-draft/page-219#entry12195885
  21. You know you can edit your posts if you want to add to them, right?
  22. And what did Chicago's roster look like last year? There is no one formula to win in the NHL, unless it's to say to have the highest quality player at every position. That could mean skill level, or size, or defensive ability, etc...
  23. Kind of like how he ignored my post directly below the one where he pleads for anyone to answer his post? Meh, mission accomplished from my end. If he doesn't want to see it then I can't help him. I like Schroeder but he has a very limited window to impress in camp over the other options or likely by the 13th forward/get sent to the AHL despite the risk of waivers.
