Guess he misses his buddy Panarin. NYR should load up and go for it. The arms race in the East is making this TDL a very interesting one.

I think the Avs were 20 points below us in 2017. 3 teams jumped ahead of them and they ended up getting the 4th overall pick, which got them Makar. I would love to see the Avs final draft ranking -- I have a feeling that they didn't have Makar at #1. With the current lottery system, even in the worst case where two teams jump ahead of the last place team, they would still end up with the 3rd overall pick. I don't think anyone should be complaining that they got the short end of the stick for picking 3rd overall. If they can't find a good player at #3, that's on them and not the lottery system. -

The odds should be more evenly spread out. 25% for the last place team but drops to 13.5% for the second last team when they are similarly bad. Almost 50% drop in the odds for two teams separated by 2 points. That doesn’t make sense at all. -

All's good. Apologies if I came off as critical. I don't mean to bash OEL too much. He apparently played through an injury. If he isn't able to recover 100%, I think it's best he stay on the IR for himself and the team. If he is back to 100% and is able to skate to the puck like he did before, he could be a good player. Until then, he is a liability. Beauvillier is exactly the type of player we needed. A glue guy who is responsible at both ends of the ice. We need one more of him on Miller's line. Ilya Mikheyev is another glue guy. Next season we have the option of trying out Beau with Miller-Garland and Mik with EP-Kuz or vice versa. That seem like a well balanced top 6. With Tocchet, I see hard working team so far. It could just be a coaching bump and young guys playing hard to earn their spots on the team. But I hope it's something deeper. Regarding the gap between bottom 6 NHL and top 6 being miniscule, that's probably due to having a poor NHL bottom 6 depth and strong top 6 AHL depth. All of our bottom 6 guys (Joshua, Aman, Dries, Lazar, Podkolzin, Studnicka) were in the AHL only a short time ago. In general, you want the gap between the bottom 6 in the NHL and the top 6 in the AHL to be as small as possible. But not in the way we have it where we have far too many marginal replacement level AHL caliber players in the bottom 6. True. Every team will be scary when they fix their problems. I guess I was speaking more of the upside the team has with high end talents, 100 point producing Selke caliber 1C (Pettersson), puck possession dman (Hughes), and offensively skilled #2C with size (Miller). Then on wing we have Kuz and Garland with skill and Mik and Beau with puck management and retrieval to go along with motor. Fixing bottom 6 is easy. You can always overpay your way out of your problem and get a Beagle for 3 mil and etc. But that's not prudent and we don't have the cap to do that. So I lied, it's hard. Hopefully the bottom 6 will sort itself out from internal competition with Hogs, Podz, Aman, Joshua, Karlsson, Lazar, Studnicka, etc all competing for the same job. Some of them will emerge and maybe we could sign a free agent 3C if one is available at a decent price in the next two seasons or so. Draisaitl? You don't think it would be like adding McDavid? Unlike McDavid, Bedard isn't coming to team bare of veteran talents. If Bedard were to come here, I would expect this team to return to the playoffs next season assuming that our defence is addressed to some level. -

That should be a suspension. -
= $$$ for Petey. I just hope it's under 11 mil at this point. Wish we re-signed him to a long term deal couple seasons ago. At that point 9-9.5 x 8 years would have done it. But then, the bridge deals are supposed to motivate players to get better and perform for the next contract. So I'm not complaining.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
jyu replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Us! We can be that patient team. We don't need him to come over for 2 more seasons until we re-organize our backend and bottom 6 anyways. I hope he slips to 7, where we are likely picking from. Then draft a center or RD with the Islanders pick. It would be great to get one more late 1st rounder this draft. I was hoping Schenn would fetch that but I guess not. -

Hmm... yeah let's hope he comes back healthier. But I liked Wolanin so far. It would be great to see him on the main roster next season. -

Thing is that this is the time for roster/depth evaluation. The young guys that get called up, they see it like a tryout but without the pressure to win games. That gets them playing at their best abilities for short term period and hence, the wins... With Silovs playing well and OEL out long term, and younger guys like Wolanin and Briesbois playing to impress, we are probably going to go about .500 from here on out. The wins do feel good but we need a top 5 pick this draft so we shouldn't be winning too many games. It's a conflicting feeling. -

Yes. If there is one game that we need to win, it's against Boston. I know people don't like Binnington here but I like him for making Marchand cry in 2019 cup finals. That was a sweet moment. -

Sundin was a top 10, 20 in scoring most seasons. If EP is a Sundin, that's heck of a piece to build around. I actually feel like Matthews is more like Sundin. Steady and reliable point and goal producer with big frame. EP's defensive game is as good as his offensive game. I don't think that was the case for Sundin. -

Failing at failing... so they are succeeding? You can't stop the players from trying. No Horvat, no Schenn, no OEL, no Demko, basically have weakened the roster as much as they can. And this team still dominates the Blues team. This team hasn't been outplayed by anyone since Tocchet took over. They are trying hard every game and that's good to see. This team could be scary good once it fixes the defence and bottom 6. -

Well, nice to see Petey with 3 point game. Kuz and Miller did their jobs. Let's cheer on the Sharks. -

Thanks for your response too. In general, I agree with what you say. I think the main difference in our view is in the amount of weight we place on various events. Absolutely. I agree that JB overpaid. One million here and half million there, they do add up. I think we had an opportunity to re-sign Petey to say 6-8 year x 9 mil if we had the cap room to make it happen. We didn't and that's why we signed him to a bridge deal and it's going cost us 10+ mil to re-sign Petey. This also has to do with the owner not accepting the rebuild. The owner clearly was not interested in anything that started with letter "r" as we all know. If he did, I wonder if JB would have signed those contracts. Agree 100%. But the point I was making was that getting those players like Guddy/Sutter or not, we would have sucked anyways. It's too bad that he gave up McCann and a second for Guddy. But McCann took so long to break out that even if he stayed, he would have been cut loose cheaply by now. Remember he was cut loose cheaply by many teams before landing in Seattle. I don't like that we gave up good prospects but the fact that the ones that we gave up took so long to develop, makes me wonder if they would have been here long enough to make a difference anyways. OEL was a desperate move by a GM who knew his shelf life was coming to an end. Lou with Islanders also made a similar move for Horvat. I agree in full here. I didn't like any of JB's moves since 2020 bubble playoffs. Well, this is probably what Linden was saying to the owner and he got shown the door. I agree with you. And seeing how the owner let Linden go, JB had no choice but to serve the owner's mandate. Let me ask you. If you have a job that you dreamed of that pays you 2 million dollars a year, you disagree with the owner. What do you do? You quit? Easy to say but hard to do in practice if you are in his position. Anyhow, I agree in full that the owner and the management should have accepted it and went about it methodically. I cut them some slack for delaying the rebuild until 2017 because of the Sedins. But as soon as they retired, they should have declared rebuild like the Rangers did. Right. Without JT, we probably miss the playoffs and pick in the top 15. We could have drafted a RHD like Schneider. I also like Lundell and Jarvis from 2020 draft. Maybe we could have had them. Yes, I disagree on this point. Putting aside bias towards Bo or Miller, the problem is that with Miller, our window of contention will be very short, maybe 3 years. IMO that's not long enough contention window to win a cup. This rebuild/retool will take a few years before we can become a playoff team. The newly drafted players will start making meaningful contributions around 3 years from now (unless we draft Bedard/Fantilli). JT will be 32-33 by then. Even if he stays fit until 35, that's only 2-3 years of contention window and that's too short because most teams go through initial playoff failure. When JT is 34/35 and if he declined significantly, he will still have 2 or 3 years left on his deal and taking up 8 mil of the valuable cap space. On the contrary, Bo will only be 30 in 3 years when new players make the team. If he declines sharply at age 35, that's 5 years. And the good news? When Bo declines at age 35, his contract is up. We can use that freed up space to continue to build a contender. Every path has a risk but you should always choose the path with minimal risk. The one we are on with JT, is not the path of minimal risk. Yes, we needed an army of young players!!! No, the Rangers are the exception not the norm. Players want to go there to play man. When 2 RHDs, Fox (Norris winner) and Trouba show up at your door along with Panarin, that's not normal. Only for New York. Riddle me this. Which other team, other than the Rangers, have build a championship caliber team without going through the draft? 4 of the core pieces they got were through trades and signings and that rarely happens (Fox, Trouba, Zibanejad, Panarin, only Shesterkin and Krieder were drafted). So, if in 2016, instead of trading for Gudbranson and signing Eriksson, if he signed a guy like Panarin and traded for a Fox using McCann and a 2nd, all is forgiven? It's OK if he didn't rebuild properly through the draft like you suggested above? That's what the Rangers did. It worked out for them because some crazy good players just walked into them but such opportunities were not available for us. Wedo not need a full rebuild anyways. This team has plenty of good pieces. Petey and Hughes are trending towards hall of fame level careers. It doesn't need a deep rebuild when you have those two. Let's not worry about Petey asking out. In the recent interview, he said he is happy. So let's see how this plays out. I'm more worried that Quinn might want out, but then he has term left in his deal.

Remember 2017 Colorado Avalanche? They finished the season with 48 points. They were full 21 points behind the 2nd worst team (that's us btw). Ducks are doing great but I don't think any team will out tank 2017 Avs. That's the gold standard for tanking. Everyone laughed when they missed out on the first overall that year but then, they got Makar. If the Ducks finish last, even if they don't win 1st overall, they will draft either Carlsson or Michkov. The bottom 4 picks are walking away with a superstar. My prediction: we pick 5th overall.
