(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller
jyu replied to combover's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'd agree that he is likely a Canuck for life unless somebody massively overpays -- which is highly unlikely so yes, he is a Canuck for life. I'm not sure if we kept the better player, but we definitely kept a more offensively minded player who has tendency to turn the puck over at critical moments in the game and also 2 years older. Better price (0.5 mil) and less term (1 year less)... not sure if that makes much of a difference. The fact of the matter is that we had to trade one and get the best haul we can. And that's what happened. We will see how Miller does under Tocchet. I like Miller's versatility to play winger/center so when we have a new top 6 center, Miller can eventually shift over to wing and still help the team. Age related decline is a huge concern though. When we are competitive, say 2-3 years later, he will be 32-33 with 4-5 years left on the contract. It has a chance to be Loui Eriksson all over again and remember how desperate people were on here to get rid of Loui? At this point, all we can do is pray that Miller doesn't experience sharp decline but a gradual decline and play well into mid 30's. -

Dylan Crawford? Is that Marc Crawford's son? Their voices are so similar! -

That line up is not better than this year. If the goal is to go for another high pick, I like the line up. Monahan << Miller. JK is an upgrade over Dries. No penalty killers still and no defensive forwards. -

I think I already replied to your post but forgot to say, yes Crosby is amazing. The most complete hockey player in the last 20 years. Lionel Messi of hockey. Since I'm replying, I might as well add a bit more thoughts. We don't have 8 mil to sign a UFA. If we do end up trading Miller, it just helps us make the ends meet next season. We wait out the bad contracts to run off, Myers, Pearson, Boeser. Keep the cap space open for when we need it. Not trading a player because you are afraid of using it to sign another LE doesn't make sense at all. The 2011 team doesn't reach it's heights and win president's trophies without leaving cap space open for Samuelsson, Hamhuis, Malholtra (I'll admit I was dumb enough to think that we overpaid for Malholtra when we have Kesler). I try to refrain from talking about Bo because that ship has sailed but maybe I'll do it one more time since you bring it up. Bo's fair price was 7. That was a number that should have kept him happy and if not, we needed to trade him. Let's say the management didn't f*ck it up and we locked in Bo at 7 mil x 8 years and say Petey at 10 x 8 years in the off season and traded Miller (just to keep every other variable constant, let's say we traded him to NYI for some package similar as the one we got). We draft a center in 2023, who will slot in behind Petey and Bo within 2 seasons (2024 or 2025 season). Petey will be 26/27, Bo would be 29/30, the new player would be around 20. Assuming Bo experiences declines by age 35, that gives us 5 seasons where we have three centers playing at high levels. Over time, 2023 draftee will surpass Bo and slot in behind Petey. Bo's salary of 7 mil will account for 7.8% of the cap, which should have risen to 90 mil. Barring that player being a superstar (Bedard/Fantilli), we have a young player for 5 more seasons under RFA status. In other words, we could sign him to an 8 year deal falling somewhere between Bo and Petey (up to 8-9 mil) or just sign bridge deals depending on our cap situation. You could envision the same scenario playing out with Miller instead of Horvat -- we draft a center in 2023 who joins the team within 2 seasons. Miller will be 31/32, Petey 26/27. If Miller maintains his level of play and channel his temper, then yes. You are absolutely right, we can make it work. But you have to admit that Miller will only have about 3 good years left at that time assuming he hits significant decline by 35. Window of contention for 5 years feels long enough to win a cup but 3 years don't feel like long, considering teams usually experience initial failures in the playoffs. So 3 years into prime playing years of Petey, 2023 draftee, and Miller, Miller's declining and costing us 8 mil with 3-4 years left in the deal. On the other hand, Bo's contract would be over when he hits 35 or only has 1 year left in the deal. At that point, we can do this exercise again with Petey, 2023 draftee, and 202x draftee or another player we acquired via trade/signed using the cap space freed up from Bo. And that's why many people wanted to go with safer choice in Bo. I also thought the same if Bo could have been had at 7 or less. Agree, it is a fallacy. It is possible. Just there aren't too much wiggle room. I also see your point regarding trading him for poor returns -- it blanks the canvas but what do we paint over it? I know OEL buyout is an option. We save 5 mil next season and 2.8 mil for two more seasons. But costs us 2.1 mil for 4 more seasons, maybe the cap will be 90 mil by then so it's peanuts. To be honest, I'd rather see us stick it out with OEL for 2-3 more seasons as we wait for other cap to clear and 2023/2024 draftees to make the team. And at that point, see if we can put him on LTIR, and if not, buy him out. One point that I worry about is that other NHL teams that we are competing against are highly cap efficient. Tampa for example, have tax advantage signs players cheaper and with smart maneuvering via LTIR, they had salary close to 100 mil in one year they won (I forgot which one). Seattle has no state tax and they seem like a team that is cap efficient. If all goes well, 3 seasons later we can contend and we have 2.1 mil of dead cap when others are finding ways to be cap efficient. To make up for that dead cap, we would need bunch of players to step in and perform well over their salary. I might be fretting over nothing really but I would like us to be in the best situation possible. -

I agree in general with what you say here. But I do think they wanted to keep those 3 centers. The saw Horvat as 3C, wanted to pay him as little as possible, maybe 6 mil? Sort of like RNH (5.125) to McDavid (12.5) and Draisaitl (8.5), the total cost is about 26 mil. They probably saw Petey (~10 mil) and Miller (8 mil) as the top 2 centers and Horvat (6-6.5 mil) as a 3C and the total cost is about 24 mil. Horvat said f*ck this and scored $hit load of goals and then refused to re-sign. I'm fine with the end result. I liked Horvat but at 8.5 mil? no no no. We do need to stay patient. The GM should consider all options, including trading Miller. I don't think he will get traded in the end but like you said, it depends on Petey, Hughes, and new players that we draft into the core. We could make it work with Miller on the team (at least I hope so). -

I'm not advocating to get rid of Miller now. To be honest, I don't know what is the best way forward, not knowing what kind of offers are out there for Miller. We suck anyways, with him or without him. The reason why we suck is not on him, the problems are deeper and there is no quick fix. Trading Miller doesn't guarantee we will be a better team 2 years later, it's an unknown but it will be like getting a blank canvas. If we keep Miller, our next set of moves are decided. We need to get rid of Garland, OEL, Boeser, and Myers. So let's say we buyout OEL and eat up 2.3 mil for a year, 4.7 mil for two seasons after than, and 2.1 mil for 4 more seasons. Ride out Myers' contract. Trade Boeser and Garland with some cap retention or sweetener. Fast forward 2, 3 years and we have cleared up enough cap space, OEL's buyout only costs 2.1 mil, the cap goes up to 90+ mil so the buyout cost won't matter much. Time to contend with 32-33 year old Miller. If Miller is still a PPG player and that he is playing hard at both ends of the ice making better decisions with the puck, it's possible. -

Crosby is not in his prime. He's been slightly over PPG since 4 years ago. Before that he was over 1.3 PPG. Crosby has declined to more in line with other stars in the league. Before he was untouchable single best player in the league with almost no one close. He still won 3 cups despite wasting away quite a bit of his prime years with concussion. If we can clear up 25 mil in cap space by trading Boeser, Garland, OEL, and Myers, then Allvin should win the GM of the year award. He will have pulled off a miracle. That scenario in which we can keep Miller and be competitive in 2 years requires something bordering a miracle... Another way is to win Bedard or Fantilli. Another way is Miller becomes even a better player than he is now, a complete player at both ends of the ice well into his mid 30's. Or Myers and OEL turn back the clock and play like when they were 23. So yes, there are many ways in which we can keep Miller and be competitive in 2 years. But most of those scenarios have low probability. -

Timeline is associated with the team, not a player. Not Petey and not Miller. The players serve the team and its plan towards winning the cup. The team makes a plan and decides what the timeline should be depending on the current roster and their contract durations/cap and the prospects that are upcoming. When they re-signed Miller, they committed to a timeline of going for it with Miller, Horvat being part of the core with EP, Hughes, and Demko. The team sucked out of the gate and they had to change their plan in the middle. They traded Horvat as a result. Now they need to come up with a new timeline because their initial plan didn't work out. If they insist on making a go for it with Miller as the centerpiece, well that's fine. They might have a good reason for doing that, who knows? But Miller is 30 so the time is running out and we should be gunning for the playoffs next season or at the very latest, the season after next. That means we need to acquire 2-3 top 4Ds, revamp bottom 6 since it is not working out right now and we are lacking good penalty killers. Our projected cap hit is 80 million dollar next season. With the salary cap of 83.5 mil, we have about 3 mil left to upgrade defence and improve bottom 6. Of course, if they will need to unload Boeser, Garland, Myers, Pearson, or even OEL. That's 20 million dollars in cap space to acquire whoever we need. But there is still a cap crunch around the league and not many teams can take on big contracts; bottom feeders will ask for massive return for taking them on as cap dumps. The naysayers are upset and are arguing that the better timeline is to aim for the playoffs in 2+ years where a lot of the cap comes off naturally. In the meantime, stockpile on picks and draft good prospects. And as you pointed out, re-signing Petey is key to starting a contention timeline 2+ years later. If Petey refuses to re-sign in the summer given a fair contract offer, then they need to re-think their plan. It will never go as smooth as planned but when you are committed to a wrong plan, you will find out pretty soon because the product on the ice will make it blatantly obvious as the losses pile up. -

Yes I would say that those stats need context. When Pasta turns the puck over, is it when he is the last man back and him trying to thread a pass through three opponents or in the offensive zone with guys backing him up? If so, how many of each type? -

I was just responding to your comment that Aman is a fast skater. I disagreed. I acknowledged that he is a smart player and he has good defensive awareness but I don't think skating is his strong suit, at least not right now. I gave my opinion on what a 4th line center should do. I like a player like Lapierre who can agitate a bit and hit as well or a player like Beagle, who was not a fast skater himself but made himself relevant through gritty plays, PK, and defending. Sometimes Beagle would often get 15+ minutes because he was valued for what he did. Not being a fast skater doesn't mean I've given up on Aman. And yet, somehow, you couldn't accept that I'm disagreeing with you and made some uninvited comment like So when I saw this, I took it as you inviting for more comments. So I gave one. What's wrong with that? Then you brought in Boeser and LE. Yes, we should be more critical of them given their salaries and performances but what's that got to do with Aman? I'm not even criticizing Aman and yet you are saying we should go easy on him and instead criticize Brock and LE? Why is it going on a tangent? I'm just not seeing a fast and physical skater but an average one. That's all. Why is that a criticism? Sedins weren't fast players but they dominated the opposition with their brains and teamwork. If there is a path for Aman to develop into a regular NHLer, his path is to rely on smarts and awareness and that's all the statement that I was making. And even if it is a criticism, why can't first year players be criticized? Then you gave your infamous "out to lunch" meme. So, I took that to mean that you are going out for a lunch to a beautiful lake side shore near your million dollar home. And what is seven eleven society? I'm not very familiar with you gen Z slangs. -

You are right. He is not the problem with this club. But he does have much improve on to become an effective player and contribute to winning consistently. 4th line players play 8-12 minutes a game. Some of them add penalty killing to their game and gets 10-14 minutes (borderline 3rd liner at that point). They really can't take a shift off given their limited ice time. They should come on the ice looking to make a difference with their forecheck, backcheck, hitting and generally just making the other team's players consume and waste energy and frustrate them. Something that guys like Lapierre or Roussel or even Dorsett did very well. Hemming the opponents in their own zone is also a way to frustrate the opposing team. So a 4th liner that consistently push the puck up and make it frustrating for the other team's scorers, should be considered as effective as guys that do their job with hitting and checking. Whether he can carve that role out for himself remains to be seen. I think he has the basis for it so hopefully he can get there. -

Petey needs the puck on his stick so that he can do magic. Miller likes the puck on his stick (so that he can turn it over -- just kidding). The lotto line worked because Miller didn't mind doing the creating space part and hitting. He doesn't want to do that anymore so that line doesn't work. Miller-Horvat kinda worked because Horvat doesn't need the puck on his stick. -

Yep, you know the pattern very well lol I get the feeling that he loves the team even though I disagree with him on many of views. So I like engaging with him on this board. I even like the meme. I interpret the meme as, "I want to avoid talking to you!" Therefore, he's going "out to lunch" -

Appreciate it. I still don’t think he is fast but that doesn’t mean he is slow. Average skater with average speed. Smart positioning and good anticipation. Doesn’t have high energy or tenacity like Roussel or Lapierre. -

what’s this got to do with Boeser and LE now? LE is long gone. Aman has skill and good hockey iq. Let’s see how he develops from here. With experience, he could develop into a good bottom six player. There. Your statement “people wanting instant ice tea” following “not everyone is a 1c/2c in their first season”. No one is disappointed because aman is not a first line player. You made that up. -

Di Giuseppe is a veteran. Not his first season. And that shows in the way he plays. He's been good. Aman, yes, he has potential to get better. He is skilled and has good hockey IQ. He has ways to go though before he can even establish himself as 4th line center. This season, other teams are evading his and his line's forecheck very easily. And their backcheck is also not strong enough. I will say that Joshua and Aman are both skilled. So if they can improve in other areas, they could make it as good 4th line players. I'm not expecting Aman to be a #1 or #2, I don't think anyone is expecting that. I don't know where you get the idea that people are expecting him to be a #1c or #2c... maybe you are reading something that is not written. -

McDonough, our (unsigned) prospect? He's a winger or do we have another McDonaugh in our system? Or are you suggesting we acquire Ryan McDonagh from Nashville? Aman is not adequate as a 4th line center. 4th line center has expectation to kill penalties as well. Aman is just not fast enough to get to pucks quick and he's not physical at all. He could improve on his forechecking game but he lacks tenacity at the moment to be a good option for 4th line center role. Joshua is in a similar boat as Aman. Definitely has the skill for bottom 6 forward but lacks tenacity and speed. OK forechecking game but he also doesn't kill penalties. Di Giuseppe is the only viable option on the checking line moving forward. This team has a lot of holes and not a lot of prospects ready to fill the holes nor does it have the cap space to sign free agents to fill those holes. Unless the management gets creative and makes big decisions, next season will more or less be the same $hit... well unless we hit the jackpot at the draft. -

This is how I saw the game too. Since Tocchet took over, this is the first game where I saw the signs of old Miller. Low percentage backhand cross ice passes... hopefully it's just a one off. The team has been playing hard since Tocchet took over and I'm happy the team got a good win like this one. Petey getting 5 points and Schenn with 3 points was nice as well. Wolanin was good. Podkolzin played hard and he has a positive effect on the rest of the team. Same with Beau, he plays hard at both ends of the ice. If Silovs is the real deal, then I can see this team winning up to 15 games out of the remaining 26 games. That's 30 points, giving us 78 points for the season and we would be looking at 10th or 11th overall pick. We absolutely need to ensure that we don't win more than 11 games to end the season below 70 points. A record like 10-14-2 is what I'm expecting, hopefully it will be few less wins. 65 points should get us a top 5-7 pick. As good as Podz has been, I think we should send him down at some point so that he plays meaningful games for Abby. Same with Silovs. Give both of them a few more games as a reward but send them down at some point and let them dominate the AHL playoffs before next season. -
And he got paid. No need to do any of the stat padding that he was doing here. He just to go and do what they ask, which is to defend rather than attack. Here, it was all about attack. Win games 6-5 was the goal here.

Petey is special on his own. Petey has potential to be as good a player as Forsberg or Datsyuk. He has that potential. But I'd say there's still ways to go before Petey gets to their levels. As for the Sedins, it's one of those cases where 1 + 1 is greater than 2. Playing with each other made each of them a better player. -

We need to send podz, wolanin, silovs back down. They are making the team better. We don’t need them until next season. Beauvillier is also a good player. Shifty. Responsible with the puck at both ends of the ice. He’s going to help us win more games than we need to. We absolutely need a top 7 pick this season to draft an elite player.
