Beau the cap dump out scoring Bo. It can’t be! -
Kuz was re-signed for 2 more seasons whereas Bo's contract would have been 8 years. It was never Kuz vs Bo. It was always going to be a choice between Miller and Bo because they were both looking for retirement contracts with significant dollars. The stupidity of the management was that they didn't realize what they were doing when they re-signed Miller; they seemed to think that they could re-sign both easily. My guess is that they were projecting Bo to be on pace for 25-30 goal and 60 points and by the middle of the season, they could offer him a moderate raise of 6.5 mil and that would get the deal done. Well, Bo had other ideas and decided to chase stats and he was out of their price range. Allvin says he made a reasonable offer, which I assume would have been 7.5 mil. But I don't even know how they were going to fit Miller's 8 mil and Horvat's 7.5 mil if they did end up re-signing Bo at that price. Where's the cap space coming from? Literally they would have been backed into a corner and would have had to give up massive sweetener to unload Myers/Boeser or give away Garland for free and buyout OEL? The fact that Bo gave them the middle finger was a good thing as now we are forced into a retool (or rebuild) and do not have to hastily try to clear the cap space. If we don't end up upgrading the top 4D next season and go again with Myers, well that's not a big deal. Another stinker of a season but another high draft pick is good for us. The season after, we will have Beauvillier, Myers, and Pearson off the books (I would consider re-signing Beau at a reasonable cost). Boeser has 1 year left and may be easier to trade. Garland might be gone by then too. Kuz will have one year left and we could trade him then for good return if he is still a 30 goal scorer. Younger guys like Podz, Hogs should be on the team and making contributions. Raty, Klim, Lekkerimaki, 2023 1st rounders should be knocking on the door as well.

(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller

Yeah i think so too. Somehow it is working out nicely with deep draft coming up and we will have two draft picks. -
(Rumour). Jake Livingstone D - NCAA - NHL Availability

He sees an opportunity to make the team this season and burn a year off of ELC. He has good chance to make the team next year without much competition, especially if we unload Myers. I hope we also bring back Tryamkin too as he can play the right side but shoots left. LDs: Hughes-OEL-Dermott-Stilman RDs: Myers-Bear-Tryamkin-Livingstone-Schenn. Trade Myers and bring in Severson on a 4 year deal? -

I think the (new) plan is to bottom out this season and the next. Not just next season. We are 5th worst in the league now. I don't know how else we can explain Martin and Delia tandem if the plan wasn't to tank this season. Regarding Miller, I also don't think we can trade him so I'm just trying to find a way to like him. I liked him in his first two seasons here so I know it's possible. He's a good player when he puts his minds to playing the right way (there, already trying and kind of working). -

Yes, Trouba basically held out for the trade to NYR. So out of their current core of Zibanejad, Panarin, Kreider, Fox, Trouba, Shesterkin, only two were drafted by them. Very unusual indeed. Laff and Kakko are still young enough that they can turn it around. Many young players have made leaps once they were given more responsibilities, like Naslund, Bertuzzi, Sedins, Kesler... Chytil has already made a significant progress. Their current core is still relatively young that if and when their young guys do make progress, they could make a serious push for the cup. But I hope they don't -

Take shortcuts? Well, that doesn't sound like Aquillini at all. Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure that they are going to try to take shortcuts. That's the Canucks way since well, since Aquillini took over. Gillis sucked at drafting and not only that, he sold off a lot of the draft picks leading to depleted NHL roster for the next guy Benning. Benning drafted some good players but he was to shorten the turn around time and that means he had to give up draft picks and prospects. The only hope this time is that they learn from other teams and do not give away draft picks and that they draft better. -

Other than Panarin and Fox wanting to go there and winning the lottery, every other aspect is exactly how you want to run your team. They hit more on their draft picks but that's not odd at all. If you consistently draft players, you are going to hit on one in the 4th rounder (Shesterkin) and hit on a few of those mid-late 1st rounders. They are a bit unique in that instead of drafting the core, they acquired them via signing/trades, well other than Shesterkin and Kreider. But these guys were drafted quite a while ago, before their rebuild began. Most of their supporting players are young (Laff, Kakko, Chytil, Schneider, Miller) and should be able to take over from the current core of Zibanejad, Panarin, Trouba when they decline in few years. So they got guys in the right age group coming up and with some superstar potential. Most teams draft their core and I think that's the path that we need to take as well. I don't anticipate a Fox or a Panarin walking onto our team as UFAs. -

Speaking of Zibanejad...what were the Sens thinking? That was a boneheaded decision. -
Guess people were happy with the performances of Lammi and High so they took it for granted that they would be re-signed? Motte wasn't coming back but he had trouble finding a suitor until later in the offseason... maybe people thought that we could bring him back? Whatever Allvin tried to upgrade the 4th line and PK, did not work. It made things worse.

Our PK was 74.9%, not last in the league. The second half after GreenBaum were fired, our PK started to see improve and it actually ranked 11th in the league at 80.5. Lammikko, Highmore, Motte played roles in PK. That line had limitations but kept it simple and played good physical forechecking game. Sure they weren't the greatest 4th line players we've ever had but our current 4th line is even worse. It's made up of bunch of guys that aren't good at anything, they don't know how to kill penalties, they can't play hard forechecking game, they don't hit, they are not overly fast. They have some skill but not enough to dominate other 4th lines.

It's not that we love our 4th liners... It's just that our current 4th liners are worse than the guy that is "small and oft injured", "out of the league", "46 games last year (oft injured) 46 games this year in the A.. can't make a mediocre StL team". Pathetic state we are in considering the 4th liners we had back in the days.

We do need to free up cap space though. We should try to offload Myers first. If that fails, then try Boeser. If that fails, then try Garland. This is assuming OEL is not tradeable due to NMC and lack of teams able to absorb that contract + prohibitive cost to dump the cap. If nothing works? We may need to buyout OEL. We are not in a good cap situation.

McLellan quote is spot on explanation as to why this team isn't going anywhere and underperforming relative to the talent level up front. I think 2020 Canucks team was a slightly above average team that went further than expected because it had guys doing the unwanted work. I agree with most of what you say here, lacking culture and winning habits. But regarding prospects, it's not that we don't have good prospects, it's that we don't have high impact prospect ready to break out. You gave Tampa as an example. They traded their captain and leading scorer Martin St. Louis in 2014, even though they were in the playoff hunt -- yes, St. Louis demanded a trade but it felt like they were going to enter a rebuild because this was before Hedman and Kucherov broke out and Stamkos alone didn't seem enough. Then, Kucherov broke out the season after and progressively got better to being the league MVP. Hedman steadily got better towards Norris winner. And other players stepped up their game (e.g., Killorn, Palat) and prospects started to make the team and pushed the existing guys (e.g., Gourde, Point). Even then, they tasted bitter playoff failures as they transitioned from all skill team of potent scorers to guys committing to win the game the hard way. I think such a path is possible with this team... if we have an impact prospect to step in sooner than the normal 3-5 year timeline. That guy must be drafted in 2023. If that gets done, the secondary prospects like Podz and Hogs (100% lock to make the team) along with one or two of Lekkerimaki, Raty, Klim, Karlsson, Aman, and Lockwood could help set the team on the right path as they learn to play the game the right way. -

Majority of the people here don't understand what foundational players bring to the table... they just want to build a team with 23 Connor Bedards. -
[Proposal] Erik Karlsson to Edmonton
jyu replied to DownUndaCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
On the second thought, the Sharks are going to suck even more if they trade Karlsson. And we need to beat them in the tank race. We absolutely need Karlsson to stay put in San Jose and help them win games. I hope there's no trade involving Karlsson this season and I hope he puts up 100 points this season with the Sharks. -

OEL's footspeed makes him a 3LD at this point. We need a 2LD between Hughes and OEL. I think it's doable, you can find one via free agency sometimes. But I'd say we are not in a rush to find one. We aren't ready to contend now anyways so having OEL there and we lose some games this season and next season, that's fine by me. Bigger problem is the right side. We need 1RD-2RD-Bear. Schenn with Hughes works for the time being. So we need at least a 2RD. Severson is a free agent. I have a feeling that they will try to sign him. Hughes-Schenn OEL-Severson Dermott-Bear Stillman Still not amazing... but complete overhaul will take some time and we need to draft a stud RHD. The bottom 6 also needs upgrade. And with the right upgrades, we should be able to bring down our GAA.
