I wouldn't regret too much about the missed deals. Those deals may have made us slightly better set up for the future. Getting Marino may have made us better now and for the future (if it ever was a possibility). But I don't think those deals make us a cup contender anyways. There is a serious flaw with the roster that it needs a major surgery to correct not a simple cosmetic job. Getting those players (Marino, Chytil, and Lundqvist) for Miller, we might be in a dog fight for the wild card spot, and give a false illusion to the management and the owner that this team is close. The fact that we are falling flat this season is a great thing in that regard. As this thread indicates, the owner and the management is finally convinced that this situation can't be salvaged and that all players are on the market as a result (minus EP and QH). Now Horvat is likely getting shipped out. I am a fan of Horvat but I am a bigger fan of this team and I know that this team needs a caliber of player surpassing that of Bo Horvat to succeed. Miller in the right situation could be a good player to have. He's one of those rare physical scoring winger and I believe he is coachable so his bad habits may be corrected.

I was watching a bit of Rangers vs Blackhawks game. They call them the "kid" line, Lafreniere-Chytil-Kakko. Yes, it's the bottom feeding Blackhawaks but Chytil was facilitating the play between the two. I wouldn't put him off as a middle 6 winger just yet. I agree that package looks enticing in hindsight, but it was a bit underwhelming at the time. If it was Schneider instead of Lundqvist, then I think we should have pulled the trigger.

I wouldn't approach the goalies the same way as the position players. They are weird and their performances depend on so many factors that makes it hard to predict success/failure of a new goalie on a new team/system. So once you have a reliable starter, you don't let him go because finding the next one could take eternity. At least that's the lesson I learned from the goalie graveyard era -- if you can call it an era. Even when you are rebuilding, it's important to have a goalie that gives you a chance to win. If the players are approaching the game thinking they are going to lose because the goalie sucks, it's going to lead to wrong habits and loser mentality, which might be impossible to recover from (i.e., the pre-McDavid Oilers and their glorious first round picks). You try so hard to score a goal and the other team scores on you so easily, that's deflating. If that repeats over and over again throughout the season and over a few seasons? Even the most mentally strong ones will be wrecked. The idea that we can sign a decent starter to hold the fort from UFA market is a dangerous one too. A recent example of this is Holtby. A cup winner and a veteran that was to shoulder the load with Demko. Well, we all know how that went. Even Halak who had over 200 wins and high profile, underperformed here. Of course, sometimes you get luck like the Flames. A division rival lets the starting goalie with unreal high danger save percentage walk to UFA, so you just nab him and problem solved. Ryan Miller is another example where a UFA worked out well. He helped to develop Marky and Marky helped develop Demko, setting off a positive chain of event. But note that he is one of the best American goalies of all time and his professionalism was off the chart. Those guys don't come around very often. I understand your logic in trying to trade everyone not in the same age group, but when it comes to the goalies, the age group is not the primary question. The primary question is, whether they are reliable. The goalies are weird like that. If they are 35 years old but are reliable, then you keep them.

Horvat gone. Garland gone. Myers should be gone even with cap retention. His salary will be 1 mil after the bonus -- maybe we won't need a retention. If they can maximize their return from the above 3 players and re-sign Kuz, Bear, and Schenn this season, I would call it a win. I would also re-sign Dermott if he's back to 100%. We have to accept that Miller and Boeser will remain on the team for a foreseeable future. Hughes-RD OEL-Schenn Dermott-Bear That 3rd pairing is pretty mobile and can suppress shots. Just need to find that missing partner for Hughes.

Tampa sold Martin St. Louis in 2014 to the Rangers. They were a borderline playoff team -- I could be wrong but I remember that they ended up making the playoffs that year even without Marty. They came back stronger but even then it wasn't enough until Brayden Point and Anthony Cirelli came along. The best way forward is to identify the core group of players to grow together and constantly inject youth through the draft until you reach that point where you are consistently making the playoffs. Then, you could start to sell your futures (1st rounders) to try to win it all like Tampa and Coloardo did. I would consider everyone drafted before Petey as a tradeable asset at this point. This is not to say that we don't need the vets. We need the vets. Guys like OEL will stay and I hope we re-sign defencemen on value contracts like Schenn and Bear. And I hope we also keep Dermott; as long as he is healthy, he's a great 3LD and bring shot suppression missing from OEL and QH. Find a right hand shot defenceman to play with Hughes and our defence will look pretty good all of sudden. Hughes-RD OEL-Schenn Dermott-Bear When it comes to forwards, we need to make a few decisions. 1. Horvat vs Miller. I had Horvat in the core and Miller not in it but now it looks like Miller is in and Horvat is out. That's not as terrible a thing as some people here seem to think: 1) Miller is a scoring winger with size, something that every team needs; 2) Horvat likely fetches what Miller would have fetched anyways, if not more; 3) an upgrade over Horvat as a scoring center would make us harder to match up. Losing two high minute players overnight is not a good way to rebuild a team that already has some pieces of the core in place (Petey, Hughes, Demko). 2. Boeser vs Garland. We already tried but failed to trade Boeser. Garland's AAV is lower so he is easier to trade. So this one, the decision is made for us: trade Garland. 3. Re-sign Kuz with Garland's cap. If he doesn't re-sign by the TDL, we have no choice but to trade him. With all of these moves sorted out this season, do not extend Bruce's contract and fire Yeo. Hire Trotz if possible. Trotz has coached multiple styles successfully and would be an ideal coach to work out our defensive structure.

If true, at least they've reached the right decision. Petey is untouchable. Hughes is nearly untouchable. Demko, if healthy, is untouchable. Everyone else should be on the block. But the younger guys like Hoglander and Podkolzin should also be kept on the roster if possible. It is critical to 1) draft a player with potential to be at the same caliber as Petey and Hughes in 2023 and 2024 and then 2) fill the age gap created by missing on 2020 and 2021 first rounders. Trade Horvat first and then decide the next move based on the returns.

That's fine. Top 3 pick will be great but we should be able to find a good player with a top 10 pick. === Missing a first round pick has a potential to leave a huge age gap between the core players' prime years. For example, Kesler was drafted full 10 years before Horvat. No wonder he wanted out. We should have drafted at least one core player after Kesler (2003) but before Bo (2013). The fact that we missed the first round in 2020 and 2021 is concerning. By drafting in the top 10 in 2023, we are likely to find a player that can contribute while EP and Hughes are still in their prime years to avoid having a wide age gap between the current core and the next one. If it were up to me, I'd trade Bo and Miller to replenish the prospect pool with players from 2020 and 2021 draft. -

Who is the guy on Francesco's right hand side? He can't be dumber than Frank, can he? Let that guy run the team. -

If the management doesn't take advantage of the first 2-3 years to properly map out their rebuild, it's only going to get harder for them. If they come out in year 3 or 4 and say that they need a retool again or rebuild or whatever, good luck. No fan will be happy. -

OEL does most of those things you listed well. But shot blocking is a huge part of shot suppression, especially on PK where you are expected to be out of position from time to time just because the other team's best players are making world class plays and the only option you have is to make the last ditch effort. OEL doesn't do that part well. -

No one is giving us 2 solid roster players under 25. Whatever Allvin wants, other teams want as well. If you have an RD and a C under 25 on your roster, would you trade them for a pending UFA? Horvat will be a rental. No one in their right mind is giving up two players under 25, let alone the two players that play the prime position of RD and a center. Sometimes, you just have to take the loss when it's inevitable. The sooner you cut your losses, the better it is. The management just inherited a team and should know that they are afforded some time to take a step back. They are the ones that are refusing to take a step back while the fans are urging them to do so. It's usually the other way around. The team has to come out, write a letter apologizing for having to take a step back for a few years. We have Petey, Hughes, and Demko. The rebuild could be very quick if done right and with a bit of luck. This is not like when JB took over and we had no one. JB literally had to build everything up from the scratch. -

Why does Francesco have so much hair compare to the other Aquillini bros, who have no hair? Isn't hair loss related to thinking hard and being smart? If so, should we let the other Aquillini bro run the team instead of Francesco? -

You know that's because of the stingy owners. The payroll was 45 mil while the other contenders were spending 70+. 25 mil difference in salary... that's like 3-4 star players. -

We should start petition for the BC government or the city of Vancouver to purchase the team from tyranny of Francesco. Raise the income tax, property tax, or whatever. I don't care. Just get it out of Francesco's hands. -

They lost me when they re-signed Miller. I don't think they can disappoint anymore but I have a feeling that they will. Maybe re-signing Horvat to 9 million dollars? -

OEL was never a shot blocker. We need another LD that can suppress shots better. Horvat was never capable of blocking a shot even if he tried. Poorly positioned defensively -- and that's why he's a poor PKer. Honestly, I feel like Horvat's checked out mentally and is interested only in padding up his stats. Sooner we trade Bo, the better it is. He might score 50 goals if he finished the season with us but that's like Cheechoo scoring 50. -

I don't think we will tank but yeah, we are not going to make the playoffs this season. I hope we get lucky like Dallas did in 2017. Win the lottery without finishing in the bottom 3. Draft a scoring center to go along with Petey. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
jyu replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Bo scoring 50 goals is something that I never envisioned. He's pulling a Cheechoo right in front of our eyes. That makes Miller our Thornton. Given the ownership's desire for the playoffs, I'm expecting Cheechoo for Dany Heatley type of trade involving Horvat rather than for younger prospects + pick type trade.
