  1. One positive of Horvat trade may be that Podz would get a call up. The kid scored 14 goals, has a good shot and is decent along the boards. Maybe we should bring Podz up to play with Miller and Garland? Mik-EP-Kuz Podz-Miller-Garland Hogs-Studnicka-Boeser Joshua-Aman-Lazar The team will take a step back with Horvat gone but yeah, we will survive.
  2. Bo has been casted as a defensive centerman but in truth, he is an offensive 2C. He is a responsible player at both ends of the ice. But he has limitations at both ends of the ice, preventing him from becoming a first line center. He does not possess high end offensive skills, i.e., maintaining puck possession, cycling the puck, making plays, etc. Nor does he possess elite defensive skills like reading the play develop to cut the passing lane, blocking shots, creating turnovers, physicality along the boards, etc. I see him as a better player than RNH but below Kadri. Considering that, the fair value for him is probably 6.5 mil. On this team, Brock Boeser, whose contribution is far below Horvat's, is making 6.6 mil. So the Horvat camp's starting point was probably around 7 mil. Whether we re-signed Miller or not, the negotiation wasn't going to end well with the two sides that far apart; re-signing Miller made things harder capwise but may have also caused some emotional damage. I think the right team for Bo is a team that already has a dominant 1C, like Colorado. He could put up points on the PP while being freed up to score against secondary defenders. He could give you 70+ points under the right circumstances.
  3. Love him or hate him, Miller is here for 7 more seasons. I slammed him in the past and will probably continue to do so as long as he makes those dumb passes that gets picked off for a breakaway. But at the end of the day, I'd rather see Miller get back to playing dominant offensive hockey like last season while playing responsibly as he did in his first two seasons here. I guess we roll with EP-Miller as the primary pieces up front for the foreseeable future.
  4. At this point, I'd trade him as soon as possible. It's a distraction and only getting worse. Maybe there is a trade in the works already? Hence Miller's practicing at center. I'm a fan of the player and the person. But honestly, I'm looking forward to the changes. I think the team and the player both needs a fresh start. Clearly, Bo is a good player but he isn't at a level where he can consistently impact the outcome and win you games night in and night out. As a secondary offensive player playing behind a dominant #1 option (like MacKinnon or McDavid), he will do great. One hope was that Petey could become that dominant #1 option and while he seems to be on his way there, it hasn't materialized yet and the time has run out on Bo Horvat's tenure with the Canucks. Bye Bo! Thanks for your service.
  5. This makes sense. Giving teams permission to talk extension has certain risks. For one, after finding out the price, they may lose interest altogether; one less buyer means less chance the price gets driven up. Sell Bo as a pure rental to the highest bidder. We will miss Bo because we are clearly worse off without him but the team has not been winning consistently with him as the leader and it's time we look for a new player and a new direction.
  6. If I may chime in, I think neither is a good defensive player. Miller: he completely gives up on plays right after he turns it over. That's been driving me crazy for at least 2+ years now. Bo: he is always hustling but the puck is going in the back of the net anyways. He is always there but doesn't have good enough read to kill the play. EP: hustles back, takes away the most likely passing lane, steals it and sends the puck the other way for our breakaway. EP reads the play. I think Miller reads the play to some level but somehow decides to make the wrong decision? maybe to avoid hustling? I don't even know at this point why he makes some of the most boneheaded plays that a player of his caliber really should not be making.
  7. If he gets rolling again and the team starts winning, then the critics will be muted for sure. Just like McDavid outscoring his defensive woes. But Miller isn't outscoring his defensive woes hence the criticism. I see +/- as a team stat. Last season, his +/- was what it was thanks to Demko boasting unreal save percentages at even strengths and on high danger chances (short handed breakaways). With Demko out and in current from coupled with current state of the defence, I don't see his +/- will rebound to what it was last season. The most concerning part is that Miller isn't driving the play as he did last season at 5-on-5. Miller scored 59 even strength points to 38 PP points. This season 14 PP points to 12 even strength points. His line was dominant last season, cycling and controlling the puck along the boards. Maybe he will be able to regain his form.
  8. Agree with you on Sutter. If Sutter was on the team, I think the PK would have been respectable and we might have made the playoffs last season and would have a better record this season. And yeah, it may have saved JB and TG's jobs. I too had long COVID. It was terrible with coughs and the chest pain. Having a normal day was not easy at time, let alone doing an intense exercise. I hope Sutter's doing well now.
  9. McDavid is outscoring his own defensive woes. Miller isn't. Miller's mistakes tend to come at a crucial moment, a sign that he isn't the guy you are going to win with.
  10. If the rumoured 5.1 mil initial offer is indeed true, then I'm happy to hear that Bo rejected 8 mil contract offer. As a fan that have followed Bo since he came into the league, I think he deserves a chance to play for a winning team and a management team that values his contribution. As a fan of the Canucks, I don't think it makes sense to commit 8yrs x 8mil for Bo when the team isn't winning with Bo as the heavy minute player. A new direction is needed. Now all I want to hear is that we trade Bo to the Avs for Byram, Newhook, and 1st. Then roll with Miller-EP-Newhook-Aman as centers.
  11. You are right indeed. The expansion draft played a role when it came to Demko vs Marky. I guess in hindsight, we should have re-signed Marky and trade Demko before the expansion draft? Tanev is injury prone but I'd rather take 60 games of Tanev over whichever player replaced him. At least in those 60 games, we would be winning. I guess the problem is that too many of the foundational players were removed from the team in a short time span. Tanev, Marky, Toffoli, Edler, Beagle, and Sutter. Who were they replaced with? Other than Demko replacing Marky, none of the roles served by those guys were properly replaced.
  12. I understand. I too was thinking that way last season but I'm finding it hard to find positives this season. This is basically a repeat of last season, the differences are that we have a better head coach, which is showing up on the goals for while the goaltending and defence have gotten worse.
  13. I don't think Canucks have any leverage to be honest. If they think they could gain an upper hand in this negotiation, they are delusional. Well, I guess one leverage they have is Bo's loyalty and his family's desire to stay in Van. Bo is a pending UFA well on pace for 40+ goals. Cap could go up by 3 mil next season and there will be plenty of suitors for a top 6 center like Bo. The fools that are running this team should be fired the minute after the TDL if they haven't re-signed Bo and have failed to trade him.
  14. You left out the worst case: we don't sh!t the bed but don't get hot enough and barely miss. That way, we keep Horvat at the TDL only to miss and our draft pick is 15th overall. We won't get top 5 unless we sell Horvat and more. The team has shown to be good enough to beat the bottom 10 teams but not strong enough to beat the top 10-12 teams consistently.
  15. Exactly. You need a second guy. We could go on and on with examples of cup winning teams needing two main guys like Malkin to Crosby, Toewes to Kane (they rarely played on the same line), Stamkos to Point, etc etc. Miller definitely is not. Bo may be -- I think he has another gear for the playoffs. Thus far this season, they have shown nothing to change my mind as they can barely hold their own weight against the top 1/3 of the league. It's going to be Petey and someone else. I hope the management reaches the same decision and move on from both Horvat and Miller.
  16. Good observation. TBL had guys develop and come up together in the AHL. They also had two top 2 picks in Stamkos and Hedman, that you can only find with a top pick. Then add in Kucherov who is the real #1 pick in his draft and Point, another top 3 or top 5 player from his draft. And some smart trades to chisel around the corners of the roster and you got a 2 time cup champs. The foundational guys are definitely very important. And the reason why I liked JB was the fact that he seemed to understand this, although he had a habit of overpaying for the foundational players. But then, he lost sight of this and made a trade for OEL and Garland and iced a team of skilled scoring guys. He also let foundational guys on defence like Tanev and Edler walk. Marky, who was the back bone of the culture that was building up to 202 was also lost. I get that Demko was coming but maybe we should have re-signed Marky and let the two battle it out before eventually trading one rather than lost a starting goalie for nothing. Now, Demko is injured and goaltending is our weakness yet again. Petey and Hughes are the only ones that have special talent on this team. We will likely need one more up front at the minimum and maybe even one more on the backend. The supporting cast isn't too bad up front but it is missing grit. I don't expect this team to have any success close to that of 2009-2012 team in the next few years. The rebuild, whether we like it or not, is upon us.
  17. It should have been Miller but it will be Horvat. Might not be a bad thing since Horvat will likely net us more in return than Miller. Any team that does their homework would know Miller's weaknesses.
  18. 1. The trade market is frozen up because of the pandemic cap freeze. This made it impossible to unload contracts. 2. The management was rushed into some key decisions like Miller and Boeser. Boeser was coming off an unfavourable RFA deal from JB so they had to give term in return for reduced AAV; Miller was coming off a a monster 99 point season and the management did not have years of viewing on this team like the fans had, so they made the wrong call to prioritize Miller over Horvat. They should've realized Miller is prone to making boneheaded passes, has low defensive IQ, and generally a selfish player who only turns it on when he feels like it. Letting Boeser walk would have been hard from asset management perspective so I don't blame them all that much. But rushing into Miller contract was a mistake. JR talked tough but basically caved down to Miller's agent. If they tried to re-sign Horvat at fair value, say 6.5-7 mil, it would have been done in the summer and we would have Petey-Horvat down the middle to build around.
  19. Yeah. He is unreal every time. I don't even know how he slid all the way to the 5th round.
  20. I'm not sure if Podz is ready to play alongside Miller-Horvat. Hogs is quicker and well suited to serve the forechecking role on that line. Fully developed Podz is a two way winger and would be the perfect winger on that line down the road. The ideal spot for him to develop is probably the 3rd line but it has been a tire fire defensively and there are other wingers ahead of him (Garland, Boeser). I wouldn't worry too much about his development. Usually a young player could take up to 5 years after draft to make the NHL full time. In Podz's case, he's already made the NHL last season (draft+3) and should have a spot if not for our absurd redundancy on wing. AHL should be a good place for him to work on his game away from all the attention.
  21. He has too much class to be wasting his air time on Chara. I prefer him to completely ignore this rather than addressing it and adding fuel to the fire.
  22. Hockey is one sport where having too much class hurts your chance of winning. Sedins and Luongo had too much class for the scumbag Bruins and the corrupted NHL. The hall of fame knows this and that's why they were first ballot HHOF inductees. Everybody in the entire hockey universe knows the true winner of 2011 Stanley cup finals.
  23. For sure. For a reasonable contract demand (of 5-6 mil), we can find the money by trading Horvat. Ideally, we should re-sign Horvat and trade Boeser but I doubt Boeser gets traded. 1st line: Mik-Petey-Kuz 2nd line: Miller-C-Boeser We need to find a defensive defenceman to play the 2nd line center position. We should also be able to trade Garland at the TDL to create cap space to upgrade defence. Garland should be a lot easier to trade than Boeser.
  24. Yes. But I still don't hate Binnington because he denied the rat from getting a cup.
