  1. Hughes was on the PP all season last year, wasn't he? The PP was at 23.48%, good for 9th in the league (source: https://www.covers.com/sport/hockey/nhl/statistics/team-powerplay/2021-2022).
  2. I love the work you put in your post. With top 6 set, I think Boeser is on the third line to start. If he can re-discover his form and score 25 goals from the 3rd line, I think that would be something special. Only cup contenders have that sort of depth. He could also build chemistry with Podz as well and help bring Podz develop his offensive game. The downside is Boeser's cap hit. With Miller on wing, we can't let Horvat walk unless the plan is to rebuild (which seems unlikely). And we should also try to re-sign Kuzmenko if we are not rebuilding as he's bringing quite a bit of skill and speed, not to mention that he is playing well with Petey and Mikheyev. Then there's upgrading the defence. Myers is our #1RD. I like Myers but he should be playing a little less minutes. Even if we defer doing any major upgrade on the defence until the cap goes up to 90 mil, we need to re-sign Horvat and Kuzmenko immediately. Not quite sure where we can find the cap space as we have about 12 mil just to re-sign Horvat, Kuzmenko, Schenn (or Schenn replacement), Bear (RFA), Dermott (RFA). That is just to keep things status quo. Horvat is going to ask for 7 mil now that he has the leverage with Miller on wing. Kuz is probably going to ask minimum 4.5, maybe 5. Bear and Dermott each will cost around 1.5 but we can trade one of them. Schenn at 1 mil?
  3. I did watch the games. They have been better on the PP. But it's just two games. And part of the success is the element of surprise. The other teams know what we do on the PP with Hughes; now without Hughes, they don't know what we are going to do so they were scrambling quite a bit. They will catch on if Hughes continues to stay out. Our PP being terrible with Hughes on it is more on the predictability of the coaching staff rather than on Hughes.

Just answering the OP's question. Anything you want to contribute?

??? We aren't going to win very many games against top half of the league if we ice 3 AHL level defenceman for any prolonged period and if Hughes is out/playing injured.
  6. Agree with this notion but where do you put him in the lineup? Take Garland off Horvat? Kuzmenko off Petey? Can he bring scoring from the 3rd line? If so, that's a big win for the team.
  7. We have such hard time gaining the zone without Hughes. I'd take OEL off the PP and put Rathbone back there. I'd reserve OEL for 5-on-5 minutes as much as possible.
  8. There's no other place in the lineup for him. Top 6 is set.
  9. Yes. The only reason why Boeser is a trade bait is because his competitors' are playing at least as good as him while combining for less cap hit than Boeser's 6.65 mil (Garland at 4.95 and Kuz at league minimum). Kuz would probably get around 4.5 to 5 mil if he gets 25+ goals this season but that's still below what Boeser is making. Boeser is a tangible asset and I hope we get something of value back.
  10. Completely agree with this. Eventually, we want to see is if Podz can drive his own line. Playing with Petey, Miller, or Horvat, that will not happen as Podz will just look to facilitate plays rather than driving the play. Playing with Aman and Joshua? He will need to learn to drive the line and when he does, that's when he will be promoted up the lineup. I think playing in the bottom 6 is the right way to develop him.
  11. A middle six winger that can slot in the top 6 is a nice luxury to have. But as it stand, we have other holes to fill in the roster that we can't really afford a 6+ mil middle six winger. I wasn't sure if we should trade Garland or Boeser before the start of the season. I know it's a small sample but the first 9 games of the season, and particularly the last 2 wins without Boeser sort of made it clear who is staying and who is leaving. In some sense, it's unfortunate that his salary is what it is. If it were 5-5.5, I think there would be more appetite to keep him around to see if he can re-discover his scoring touch while becoming a versatile player that can play up and down the lineup. I think injury-free Boeser can re-invent his game and when he does, he will likely be worth his price tag. It's probably going to happen with another team though.
  12. I don't think anyone is running Boeser out of town. The bottom line is that Boeser has been pushed out of the top 6. Not purely his fault but he has been having injury problems while Garland and Kuzmenko have started to establish chemistry with Bo and Petey respectively. At this point, I don't think Bruce would disrupt the top 2 lines just to fit Boeser in the lineup. I think one subtlety that went unnoticed is Pearson moving to the bottom 6. Pearson focussing on the defensive side of the puck helped bring balance to the lineup. Is Boeser versatile enough to play a bottom 6 role like Pearson? Because Boeser would easily slot in over Hoglander: Pearson-Studnicka-Boeser Podz-Aman-Joshua We shall find out when he returns. I would like to see Boeser re-invent his game a bit and become more of a middle 6 winger. If he isn't able to do so, Boeser will clearly be the odd man out and we are probably better off to trade him just to open up the cap space for Horvat and Kuzmenko.
  13. No question that JB was rushed. After failing to retain 3 key roster players after that 2020 playoff run, he probably felt cornered and made a desperation move. Situation wasn't ideal with flat cap and all but the current NHL is drive so much by the young players that dealing the #9 overall pick feels like a mistake. Anyhow, the rebuild is probably not going to happen and I'm happy that Garland seems to have found his spot beside Miller and Horvat.
  14. Go out for a walk. Reminisce my life as a Canucks fan and probably cry. Then probably drink and celebrate the night.
  15. I think OEL trade sort of made sense given that we've already let Tanev walk with inadequate replacement in Hamonic and he was about the let Edler walk. JB wasn't looking to rebuild so he needed to bring in a defenceman.
  16. With Miller moving to wing and looking good with Horvat, keeping Bo became priority unless the goal is to rebuild or if there is a deal that can address our needs on RD. And Kuzmenko looks good with Petey. We will have to trade Brock to make space to sign Bo and Kuzmenko. Our top 6 gets fixed: Miller-Horvat-Garland Mik-Petey-Kuz Bottom 6 looks pretty decent as well: Podz-Aman-Joshua Pearson-Lazar (Dries/Studnicka)-Hoglander Podz and Hog developing their game in the bottom 6 makes a lot of sense rather than putting an unnecessary pressure on them to score.
  17. Well, the team was pretty good up until around 2015 so it didn't make sense to rebuild. They did a good job of transitioning from WCE era to Sedins by strengthening goaltending and defence. Our downfall was the draft and not having a succession plan beyond the Sedins. I think of 2016-2019 as the rebuilding years. We finished 3rd, 2nd, 6th, and 10th worst from 2016 to 2019. Whiffed on 2016 draft but got a 1C and 1LD in 2017 and 2018 and a two way middle six winger with top 6 potential in 2019. Wasn't able to find an RHD. We didn't have many assets to sell but we sold whatever we could: Schneider, Luongo, Hansen, Burrows, Kesler, Bieksa, Garrison. We couldn't have traded Tanev and Edler if we wanted to ice an NHL lineup. And signing guys like Ryan Miller, Beagle, Roussel also fall in the category of having to at least ice an NHL level caliber roster so that the younger players has the time to develop. Can't imagine Petey and Hughes having to block shots in the PK in their rookie years. And the team still need to sell tickets, the owner can't be looking at an empty arena. JB did make some ill-advised moves to try to expedite the rebuild, which fell flat like Forsling for Clendening, Baer for 2nd, Vey for 2nd, McCann for Gud, and etc. We were probably better off not making some or all of these moves. But I don't think those moves ruined our team's future all that much either. One move that worked in cutting the rebuild short was trading a 1st for Miller. I think without Miller, we are looking at a top 10-15 draft pick in 2020 and that's where we could have drafted Braden Schneider or Justin Barron, RHDs with a top 4 potential. 2021 could've gotten us Guenther, a player with 1RW potential. So if we did do a rebuild as you wanted, we might be looking at a much more balanced roster with a ton of cap space to acquire veterans to supplement the core. We could still have signed Mikheyev and Kuzmenko for example. And have the cap space to take advantage of other teams needing to shed salary. So, I don't disagree with you. I would like to see a proper rebuild too but at this point with the pieces that are already here... and if the last two games are the true indication of how good this team is, then there won't be a rebuild.
  18. Great win. Miller has looked so much better since he's moved to the wing. He looked much more engaged at both ends of the ice. Garland is a top 6 winger; I hope Boudreau doesn't ever scratch Garland or demote him to the third line. We now have 2 strong lines. I was impressed with Martin's play. He played like Demko did last season. He was proactive and looked very poised. I think Rathbone has officially made the NHL. I'd play him over Stillman even after Stillman returns. Briesbois has played a solid game as well.
  19. 2023 1st needs to be top 10 protected. I don't think Seth Jones alone will get us into the playoffs so we may very well be looking at a high draft pick in 2023. I'd rather see us go through a 2-3 year rebuild but if the goal is to try to "retool on the fly", then I guess we could give this trade a go.
  20. Not a fan of a trade where we get an older "prospect" who failed to make it to the big league while giving up a younger prospect/draft pick. This is the type of trade JB would pull off quite often. Forsling for Clendening. Baer for 2nd round pick (Rasmus Andersson). Wasn't Forsling also years away and we were basically expediting the rebuild by getting a more developed Forsling in Clendening? At least Baer played NHL games for us and scored at a decent rate until his concussion essentially ended his career.
  21. Fire Alvin if we trade Hoglander for Bear. Bear is not even in the lineup and makes 2.2 mil. He's a cap dump and we give up a young player on an ELC?
  22. Pettersson was good and hence, his line. I think Petey will get 90+ points. Petey would have at least 3-5 more assists if his linemates buried those chances with net half open.
  23. We need to start scoring on empty net chances. Missing almost one per game.
  24. Good win. Props to Miller for the fight and the block at the end. We all know about our lack of RDs. I think we need a shutdown LD as well. OEL just doesn't cut it as a shutdown defenceman in the dying minutes of the game.
