Glad to hear that it was false.

It's embarrassing. I'm not a fan of JT, but people have to leave him alone when he's not working, especially if he's spending time with his family.

They are asking Hoglander, a roster player for a 2.2 mil cap dump? Are they out of their minds? They should add a 4th or 5th for us to take that cap off their books so that they can add other players this season at the TDL. If we give up Hoglander for Bear alone, I'm done following this team until Rutherford and Allvin are fired. Edit: Wow Carolina's cap is so tidy.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
jyu replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think that interview of him wanting to be on a winning team is a bit overblown. He wasn't looking to be out, he was just saying he wants to win and phrased it in a way that led to weird translation. If Pettersson puts up great numbers for the next couple of seasons, I don't see that being a problem. We offer him 10 million dollars, I'd like to see him say no to that? How many winning teams can fit in a 10 million dollars contract? But on the off chance that he refuses? I think we can trade him for a pretty good return. Right now, we just need to worry about affording Horvat, which seems highly unlikely. Then we need look for best trade options for Bo. -

Only if he refuses to re-sign. Then, we should trade him like Calgary traded Tkachuk. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

I don't like these guys either but that tweet is just stating the fact. The team sucked for almost a decade. And I think it starts from the ownership and the management not having a proper plan in place. If you think about the history of the franchise, although we sucked in the 80's, that's when we started to establish culture (Smyl) and in the latter part of the 80's started to bring in good players that became the foundation for the team's culture in the 90's culminating in the cup run in 1994 (Linden, Bure). Then, a bit of rebuilding years in the latter part of the 90's that led us to the WCE era in the 2000's. WCE era Canucks would have had more success if the owner spent little more money to upgrade the goaltending. Then, the Sedins and Kesler took over for nearly a decade after WCE. But we've had no succession plan in place for the Sedins. The blame goes to Gillis who failed at the draft, although I think he did a good job building the NHL roster. Realizing his failure at the draft, Gillis seemed like he wanted a rebuild. Well, the greedy owner fired Gillis for that. And now the team has no identity. -
He's never been a GM, so what kind of draft history are we talking about ehre? Was he a director of scouting or an AGM in charge of the draft with the Pens? But yeah, he can't seem to make a trade to save his life. But his job is not in danger at the moment so he'd rather be patient and not make a mistake? Well, I guess re-signing Miller was probably his first mistake.

Keeping Markstrom for the playoffs and letting him walk was palatable because we had Demko. But if we are playing the hindsight game, I would have re-signed Marky first and then trade Demko. Toffoli would have been nice to keep, especially since Virtanen didn't work out. But he is again a forward, and we have one too many already. Tanev, we never replaced. Just having Tanev in the line up, we would have made the playoffs last season and we would be off to a much better start this season. And to some extent, Edler's minutes were never replaced. Maybe Dermott could grow into that role? In a world where we still make OEL+Garland trade but keep Tanev, I think we get a pretty decent defence core. Hughes-Tanev OEL-Myers Edler replacement (Dermott)-Schenn Not a cup caliber defence but a playoff caliber defence and possibly #1RHD away from becoming cup caliber. Anyways, let's go team tank! Let's bring Bedard home.

I hope our GM catches on soon enough. I get that it's probably hard to admit that this team needs a rebuild given that there are quite a bit of good young players. And you'd think that with so many talented forwards on the roster fixing the defence via trade shouldn't be too hard... but then, they completely failed to upgrade the defence over the summer. That leaves me to believe that this defence isn't getting fixed without going through the draft. No one is giving up a young RHD for a top 6 winger (Boeser) or a top 6 center about to hit the free agency (Miller/Horvat). And we need two top 4 RHDs!! Rebuild is the only way out.

(Proposal) Who should be the first to go?
jyu replied to nameci's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Ottawa trading for Miller could be a win-win for both teams and maybe not such a bad proposition for Miller. Miller goes to a young team that is more ready than we are to take the next step. He won't be scrutinized in Ottawa like he is here. Ottawa gets a power forward who could compliment their young players. I don't know if Ottawa will have enough cap space to accommodate Miller's cap though. Canucks clears Miller's cap and gains flexibility. If Horvat doesn't want to re-sign, then we can trade him and start rebuilding the roster. -

This is the truth (unfortunately). -
Well, that's a good news. I think it's never too late for us if we change the direction now. Trade Horvat then Miller and in the meantime, build up the analytics department and go from there. We will suck for sure but that seems inevitable at this point. There's no quick fixing this defence.

I didn't say we will win in 2025. I said we start going for it in 2025 after rebuilding. I think Podz has potential to be like Landeskog. It's all about assembling a roster with the best possible potential. Even Bedard is a potential, he might suck at the NHL level, you never know. If we are starting with the assumption that no one will pan out and Pettersson and Hughes will surely leave because they can't weather a rebuild, then what should we do? Why do we even bother and why do you even bother posting here?

Agree with everything you said here. But I think we would need one more superstar caliber player to have a shot at winning. Bedard-Pettersson-Hughes
-
So, what are you suggesting? Make a suggestion.

I see Horvat = O'Reilly and Miller = Duchene. Colorado traded both to get the rebuild started. We should probably do the same.

0-5-2 with 75 games left. Can we turn it around?
jyu replied to PetterssonOrPeterson's topic in Canucks Talk
Let's be realistic here. -
Miller is our Matt Duchene. Talented and skilled player for sure but it feels like he's stunting growth of younger core players.

I had my doubts about JR but then he sounded intelligent in his interviews. It looked like he was going to play hardball with Miller and he made it seem like we will be a no brainer to re-sign Horvat. Well, he did the exact opposite of what he said. So, now I don't know what to think. I do like Allvin signing Lazar, Aman, Joshua, Kuzmenko. I don't mind Mikheyev, the guy brings skill and speed that was missing on this team. I just don't understand the Miller signing. Like, couldn't they have waited to see how the season would progress? I remember him saying that we have until the TDL to sign him and that there was no rush: it was either re-sign him by TDL or trade him. I bet if he stuck to his words and did not jump the gun to re-sign Miller, Miller would already have 10 points and and we would be 5-0-2.

Let's be honest. We've been in a rebuild since 2014? or 2016? I guess the team was good enough for 100+ points in 2015 so maybe it's 2016. Aside from making the playoffs in 2020 due to COVID shortening the season, we've missed the playoffs every season since then. So, I'd say we've been rebuilding for 7 seasons. It's not too different from the Avs. Avs tanked for like 9 seasons (2009 to 2017)? or maybe 11 seasons (2009 to 2019)? They did have more luck than we did for sure, getting Mac and Makar. Maybe it's our turn to get lucky. You never know, that's why you gotta keep on buying those lottery tickets. One day it could be you. Rebuild for the next 3 years. All it's going to take is for us to get a top 3 pick in this draft. Bedard would be great but the other two guys seem like no jokes either. And two more years of high draft picks to find our #1 RHD. Trade Horvat (only because Miller is probably untradeable) for younger pieces (F, D, picks, or any combination) like the Avs did with O'Reilly. Trade Kuzmenko for a pick or maybe re-sign him. I like this skilled Russian -- I think he will give us some good entertainment along with Petey, Podz, and Hughes during the rebuilding years but not being good enough to make us exit the rebuild prematurely. Wait for Boeser, Pearson, and Myers contract to come off the books. In fact, Myers might be tradeable next season given scarcity of RHDs. Same with Pearson. Doubt Boeser is going anywhere, either he turns it around or we just let him walk after his contract is up. Then go for it in around 2025. Petey and Hughes would be 26, 27. Podz would be 24. Demko will be 30, elite goalies perform well into 30's he might still be part of the core. Bedard will only be 21 and we will have a very long cup window to come

It's possible... 1. We need Demko to play like he did last season. 2. Hughes needs to get healthy ASAP. 3. We need at least 2 of Dermott, Stillman, and Poolman to return so that we don't have to ice more than 1 AHL caliber defender. 4. The whole group needs to learn to play a grittier game or we should make trades to acquire gritty veteran players who know how to defend and grind out a win.
