Your post makes the most sense. As you said, option 1 was never really an option given that we had Petey, Hughes, Demko, and after re-signing Miller it was never going to be option 1. With Bo trade, I thought they were clearly going for option 2... right now it looks like they are treading the rope between option 2 + 3. They want to retool but also expedite the process if possible by going after high-caliber NHL roster players. IMO, that's nearly impossible to pull off. But it is possible because the core of Petey-Hughes-Demko is so strong and Miller for now is a strong player that can supplement the core. 1. Draft a stud in 2023 with our 1st. 2. Offload at least 2 of Myers, Boeser, Garland. 3. LTIR for OEL (I assume trade is impossible without giving up a significant sweetener). 4. Sign a UFA top 4LD (e.g., Graves or Gavrikov) and/or top 4RD (e.g., Severson). 5. Sign a UFA 3C (e.g., Barbashev). We need to offload at least Myer's contract to be cap compliant and have room to re-sign Dermott or Bear and sign Schenn and re-sign Wolanin. That will keep us cap compliant but no room to add and we have the same roster as this season + Hronek. Beau-Petey-Kuz Mik-Miller-Boeser (Garland gets traded) Podz-3C-Hogs Joshua-Aman-Lazar Potential options at 3C: Studnicka, Kravtsov, Raty, Dries Hughes-Schenn Dermott-Hronek Wolanin-Bear I think it's a roster that can contend for the wild card spot depending on 3C and if Demko performs well.

Yes. We are still in a position to trade up for Bedard for sure. If we are picking around 4th overall or so, I think whichever team wins the lottery will take our offer of Pettersson, Hughes, and 4th overall pick for Bedard. Bedard is the player to build around. I don't care about giving up Pettersson and Hughes if it means we can get Bedard.

One word to describe the organization's 8 years of retooling.

Good point. That’s why i said they will start knocking on the door. By then, we will know which of our picks will have a shot at making the team full time and when they will make it. That alone gives you enough information to plan things out like which areas we will have a surplus of and areas of need. We could then trade assets as needed to complete the roster.

I generally do not agree with drance all that much. But i think a patient two year retool would have worked out for this team. Suck for two seasons but be good two years out. with how quick the drafted players make the NHL these days, the guys we draft in 2023 will start knocking on the door in 2025. Petey, Hughes are still young enough that we could have a good five to seven year window from that point on. If we are in the playoffs next year, 2023 draft is the only year where we will have a chance to add a game changer through the draft. If we fail to do so, we will be a mediocre team for a while.

This info makes one question about the timing even more. The only conjecture that i have is that the Canucks thought the islanders are making the playoffs and that the pick will be around 20 or worse and that it’s value will be lower come the off-season. While Detroit wanted to roll the dice and gamble on getting a mid first pick.
