Yup. Boeser can drive his line. Garland and new Beau are not okay drivers. They are complimentary pieces. If we can add new Beau to OEL, Myers, Garland then we clear 22 million for next year. I sure hope our owner will support management and cut the cheques needed to make these Moses happen.
It’s partly his fault we have Garland and OEL to start with. First he was clearly pushing Benning to make additions to help us get into the playoffs and then he had to sign off on the trade.
Aquilini needs to allow new management to clean the stain of that trade.Hows this.
Keep OEL for one more year to see how he does with an RD not named Myers. The buyout would be fuggly
Garland, Beau, Myers traded and assuming Pearson is good to go. If he's not we have an extra 3M to work with
81.5 M
Kuzy- Petey- Mik
PDG- Miller- Boeser
Pearce- F. Gaudreau- Podz
Hogs- Aman - Josh
Hughes- Dumba
OEL- Hronik
Gavrikov- Bear
Hirose- Juulson/ Burroughs
Demmer- Delia/ Silovs

I think Myers is hurting more than OEL was.
We should be able unload Myers after his bonus is paid out and keep OEL.
He had a good bounce back year last year when playing with Myers most of the year. This cannot be said for any defensive partner of Myers since he's joined the Canucks. Also OEL was obviously playing hurt this year.
Imagining a healthy OEL with Hronek as a main stay D partner or even Bear is worth seeing what we really have. If healthy he's a top 4 I believe.
If he fails with a legit D partner then we try to sweeten the pot, retain 15% salary and make a move in 2024-25.
A buyout would be the absolute last resort as the large cap hit time frame of the buy out is when our core will be their best . We need all the cap space possible in 2026-2028

We were awful tonight. We didn’t play as an all for one group. And we know why.
That had nothing to do with Kuzmenko. Bad habits creeped in with St Louis as well.
Even though I hate Calgary more then a root canal, this is a test to see how Tocchet handles these bad habits now rather then the start of next season.

Glad he's "zipping" it on the pressers and letting PA and team do their job.
Hopefully the current successes translates to the 2nd half of 2023 and beyond
Confirms Bear will probably get signed this summer.

Agent Jason Davidson on Ethan Bear contract talks : "We have not spoken since all-star game, sometimes when you do not agree you tend to shut it down."
"Ethan is willing to do a 1 year show me deal where as im guessing this team doesn't want to walk this right handed d-man to free agency either. So that's our concern, those free agency years aren't free and they have to be compensated for."
Sounds to me like the 2 parties are a long way off agreement. Are reported to not even be talking anymore. Plus Bear is not looking to earn low salary during his free agent years for the sake of a longterm contract.
Thinking 2.2M for 3 years or something like that. He's going to be 26 in June so don't expect much more on a show me year.
His minutes indicate a 3rd pairing D can play top 4 when needed. He's not involved with either of the PP units and is #4 or 5 man on the PK so most minutes are 5-5.
Decent puck retriever, not overly physical, OK offensive numbers. 2M range is the most he's worth and he been treated well in Van after sitting in Carolina.

I assume Rathbone and Myers both get traded, Dermott and Bear released, and Juulsen either grabs a spot as a 6th defenseman or is our first call up.I’d do a sign and trade for Bear if possible. He’s going to want a $2M~ contract and I don’t know if that’s worth it.
I think it’s pretty pointless to guess what our d situation will look like next year. The only sure pieces are Hughes and Hronek
I think Bear gets reupped for a year or 2 for about 2M since he's not a UFA
He's a solid 3rd pairing RD that we need and that can play top 4 minutes when required.
Would be nice to sign 1 more NHL ready guy for 3rd pairing LD in the summer and then Hirose, Breezer/ Wolanin can battle for injury callup or 7th-8th ready to go

Like this signing!
High IQ , good 2 way, shifty D man and we now need a lefty to compete for 3rd or 4th pairing. He could be the one after some Abby time to "play the right way"
Don't see Dermott being resigned with concussion issues.
Already have Poolman and Pearson questionable to start next season.

I'm SO incredibly happy that the Sedins are still on the ice and involved with the game they love so much and contributed a great deal to. It's awesome...they're just great human beings and the skillset they had and knowledge they can share is so valuable to this team.
Absolutely, great Canuck ambassadors.
I think their presence and experiences are an incredible asset for all European players coming in to Van. Not just Swedes.
It may partially swayed a signing or even a trade where a player would add Van to their trade list, along with our core players.

I'm curious to see how the path they take with Hronek. If he comes in and kills it, he's going to be looking for $7mish on his next deal, but he'll also be very, very valuable at the next tdl. Can they afford another $7m dman or will they move him for a big return?
We may when Myers 6m contract in gone next year or this summer.
An OEL contract buyout should be in the works in 2-3 years depending on uhmmmm a million scenarios

It's interesting. You don't really think of Hughes when you think of leaders in the Canuck locker room.
Darkhorse candidate for the captaincy?
Yeah he's brought his game to a new level under Tocchet.
In some ways I hope they leave A's on the 3 leaders as they're all playing possibly their best hockey. Not just points wise.

I won't disagree with you - BUT - our goal is to win the cup (REMEMBER???) Not squeek in the playoffs and this team is miles away from that. Granted, one step at time, but there are two many "passengers" on the Canucks train and why I and thousands of other Canuck fans are fed-up with the annual "tinkering around the edges" we go thru year after year after year without any sustained results and why many want a Rebuild because the springtime "Tinkerings" we've seen for over a decade have and are failing us.
I see no difference this year and we'll likely be having this same conversation this exact time next year! (Hope I'm wrong!)
I believe this team is different then in the past.
We're not close to being a contender but for the first time in over 10 years we have proven core pieces to get us there. Pettersson, Hughes, Demko.
All 3 are elite and arguably the best in their position for the Canucks in the past 2 decades and they're younger then Sedin, Sedin, Luongo.
We have a coach that management wants now instead of lame duck Bruce and he is ultra focused on not winning now, but building structure for the future. They just happen to be winning with a #1 goalie back, improved structure and most players buying in.
Whether it's Brock, Garland, Myers, OEL buyout etc... that we do this summer, I believe management will make a thoughtful move instead of a desperate one.
Bringing in Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Hronek, Bear and other depth pieces have helped
It will be a 2-4 year plan that will make us competitive and hopefully a contender in that time.

We were a goalpost away from potentially winning the cup in 1994. We were a goaltender away from potentially winning the cup in 2003. We were the cup favourites in 2011 but somehow still managed to lose even with a pretty complete team. So, we had our shots. Winning isn't just about having the best team. You need some luck as well.
We had a window to really break the team down and do some type of a rebuild after 2014. Unfortunately, even with some high top 6 picks we managed to screw that up, along with some of the worst trades in franchise history. So, that window is gone now. However, through all of those blunders, we still managed to collect enough high picks to draft 3 core players to build around. Which is what we are doing now. A full rebuild would mean losing those core players that we spent so much time drafting and developing, so at the end of the day we are not in a situation to rebuild. However, we are in a situation where we can retool on the fly. Which is what JR/PA are doing right now. They didn't do much in the first few months but are quite active now and are not yet finished. I'm excited to see the finished product. I think we are about 2 years away from seeing that.
Did a compare between 2008-9 and 2023 Canucks
On paper our top 6 F is comparable as well as Demko vs Luongo
Their core at the time- Sedin, Sedin, Kesler, Bieksa, Mitchell, Luongo
Ours- Pettersson, Kuzmenko, Miller, Hughes, Hronek, Demko
By 2011 Canucks flipped half their D with 2 excellent signings and an iffy trade as we all know. We need to do the same
They had more grit then the current team but we have Hughes. We need some successful signings and trades obviously but not all is lost as we have our core.

Thing is, Bruce also can't be ignored for coming in and taking on a team that was dismal and inspiring hope and confidence. You have to start there before you can work outward. I do agree that it seems that was an initial shot in the arm and more was needed. But the Bruce there it is crowd (I'm one of them) appreciates what he did do, which was make hockey fun again and that rubbed off on the team. Petey and co. may not have wanted to stay on if that intervention hadn't happened.
And we can't really predict that OEL "will be fine" because he's a veteran player who shouldn't need too much coaching...he could be more leader than follower and that didn't seem to be the case. Myers too...I don't know we can blame their glaring deficiencies completely on a lack of structure/system. When they are diving all over the place that's on them (too). You'll likely respond with something that lets them off the hook, but I'm not so sure we should do that. They should know what to do out there even if/when others don't (due to lack of structure).
Agree Bruce and his personality struck a chord last year and the players bought into his style of play, especially after Greens style. I think the problem at the start of this year and training camp is that his style, and the style management was looking was never going to work. You can't teach a 30-40 year coach to change his style to a more structure based system when he's had great success with his own offensive, aggressive style of coaching. You add no contract extension and criticism from Rutherford and it was doomed to fail.
Looking forward to next year with Tocchet (their guy) carrying on with one coaching direction. OEL (please, no buy out!) and especially Myers will work better under a more systematic defensive game. Already showing with Myers.

Was on the Bear train to success when he started, but I wonder if we focus that 2M or so against a true top 4 defensive D man to pair with Hughes.
Burroughs could be our answer for a RD bottom pairing for less and I think his game matches what Tocchet would like to see.
Also when possible concussion news hits most Canuck players it does not turn out well

Sat thinks we need 2 more defensman? Yes. That would be nice. But it's unrealistic.
If we buyout OEL we need 2 more. Thinking we keep OEL for another year to see how he does under Tocchet and healthy
If Tocchet can keep Myers play consistent we could simply have
Hughes- Bear
OEL - Hronek
PK LD - Myers
who knows- Burroughs
