[Speculation] Is Schmidt on the move?
wallstreetamigo replied to Me_'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I have clearly never said that everything the media says must be true. Provide one qute where I said that. Go ahead I will wait. Saying something could still be true even though the GM denies it (while the player says nothing at all) is a pretty reasonable argument. Schmidt coming out and saying he hasnt asked to be traded would stop the rumor cold. There is no downside to him doing so at all really. You are just trying to manufacture reasons why it cant possibly be true. If Schmidt doesnt care about getting traded then why are you guys so up in arms that the rumor must be false whether he says anything about it or not? The rumor could be true or it could be false. Unless Schmidt or his agent publicly says so we arent likely to ever know. -

I dont believe ANY of them at face value simply because of what they say. I dont think Benning is stilupid enough to admit that kind of thing even if it were true. What advantage would he get from doing so? Schmidt can say he didnt ask to be traded but he hasnt. The media will continue to talk about it like any other story. I clearly said it could be true or it could not be. How exactly is that biased? Its actually biased to suggest it cant possibly be true just because Benning said so. You are biased towards believing whatever he says actually. It could absolutely be true. -

I think you misunderstood what I said. I said if Schmidt DIDN'T (as in didnt ask to be traded) why would he not just come out and say so to kill the rumors. -

I would say I was actually old enough to be considered an actual fan in 1979. Before that I watched them, collected hockey cards, etc. but didnt play hockey myself yet so really didnt know enough to be considered a fan of the team. Lets put it this way. I am old enough to remember when people could have a discussion about hockey with people who had different opinions without getting all millenial sensitivity training butthurt and have to cry about how negative so and so hurt their feelings. Not sure why any criticism automatically equals negativity. -

The rumor isnt that GM's are asking about Schmidt though. They are that Schmidt himself wants to be traded. If he didnt, you would think he would simply say so. -

I wish that I was not so jaded by real world experience that I could simply believe everything is black and white like that. Unfortunately it doesnt work that way. Agents dont automatically run to the media. They only do when they feel they have no other option to get the result they are looking for. Even if Schmidt gets traded, many will still insist there was no truth to the rumor at the time because it wont fit their narrative to admit it. -

When the rumor originally came out it was not immediately tamped down by Schmidt or his agent which is exactly why it keeps getting revived. -

Sometimes they do. Not every player immediately demands publicly to be traded. Maybe they have communicated their desire to be moved to Benning and rather than make that harder on him they will give him some time to get it done. If he doesnt by the time they want him to, maybe then they go public. -

The only thing we know for sure is that there is always a ton more behind the scenes that we never get wind of in almost every situation. Reporters jobs are to report what they hear. Not to tow the company line. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. And sometimes between the time they report something and the public backlash, something material changes in the situation. Players wanting to be traded often fall into this category as there can be any number of reasons for those kinds of requests. No one knows what really was going on with any of those situations though. You only know what you are told. That doesnt mean anything though. Rumors are rumors for a reason. Doesnt mean they are true or arent. As an example, just because Hughes denied the IV thing doesnt 100% mean it actually didnt happen. It could very well mean that him and the Canucks just didnt want anyone to know it did. They would have a lot of reasons to want that hidden especially during the season. I personally think that story was BS but the reality of how media and organizations work is sometimes they do craft the narrative they want. Clark stayed but he got a pretty sweetheart deal to do so. That could just as easily mean Benning delaying forced him into a situation where he had to give in to what Clark wanted to keep him. Again, not saying that is or isnt the case. Just saying that what you hear, especially from hockey players and executives along with the media, must always be taken with a grain of salt because rarely do we ever get the full context of any behind the scenes situation. I cantell you that there have been stories over the years that were not reported even though verified and viable because of the potential collateral damage. If the Vancouver media did not have ethics, they would not have thought twice about reporting them. I stand by my opinion that the key Vancouver media players get a bad rap on here. -

Real journalists dont do this. When they cite unnamed sources it isnt other media outlets or personalities. If they are repeating what others in the media are saying and using what that person is saying as a source, they will publicly acknowledge the source. Like when another media person is talking about something reported by Elliote Friedman for example. They right away identify him as having reported it. I know people around here hate the media for not being Benning/Canucks cheerleaders (which, in fact is not their job anyway) but most of the main Vancouver media personalities have a great deal of professional ethics. -

Actually neither Schmidt nor his agent publicly addressing such a persistent rumor gives me the opposite impression tbh. -

I have not seen Schmidt saying the rumor isnt true anywhere. If you have a link to a direct comment on it from him post it as I have not. Benning denied it. And he denied it on behalf ofSchmidt which also means absolutely nothing. He has all kinds of reasons to do so even if it was true. Would be stupid of him to acknowledge it when Schmidt hasnt forced his hand by declaring it publicly. The rumor could be true, it could be false. Benning saying it's false is not really definitive proof of anything. GM's lie in the media all the time. Much of the time, persistent rumors are persistent for a reason. Not always though. But dont believe Benning just because he said it. No GM would be the first to confirm a rumor like that, at least not if they had half a brain. -

Thanks for the confirmation that you dont have anything of value to add to the conversation. -

We wont really know until Schmidt or Benning says so publicly or Schmidt is suddenly traded. Benning was pretty clear he wanted to keep him so if he does get traded its not a huge assumption that he wanted to be. I expect the return and the destination of any move would give a good indication too. -

Notice you dont actually have a conversation or specifically refute anything I stated but just say its wrong with absolutely no evidence presented as to why. Not sure you should be questioning anyone else's reading comprehension. -

He doesnt seem to really fit on or off the ice so I could see it being more Canuck based than Schmidt based. Having said that, the opposite would also not surprise me much. He came from a winning organization. I am sure he wants to be on a contender given his age and previous situation. -

I know it doesnt fit the pro Benning narrative but everything I said is actually fact bud. -

No one knows if Schmidt wants out or not. If he suddenly gets traded I guess we know the answer. Looking at the situation I would not be surprised if he does want to move on. And i dont really blame him if he does. But to give him credit, if true, he at least so far isnt waging that war in the public space. I expect we will see him moved and honestly I am fine either way. He can be much better than he showed in his first year. I think he needs a different D partner and a role that actually fits his strengths as a player. If that role isnt available to him here he will be moved. -

People hijacked this thread blaming Gillis for all of Bennings mistakes. Pretty sure thats more annoying. -

So which is it? The core he inherited was garbage or they turned it around quickly? What happened after that year? Because turning it around for one season (after a train wreck that was the Tortorella experiment) then becoming a perennial bottom feeder seems to lay even more of the blame on Benning rather than Gillis. People want to have it both ways. They want to blame the failures on Gillis but give the credit to Benning. It doesnt work that way.
