  1. My point was to refute the ridiculous notion made that Hughes should never be traded. He isa great young player but as VH pointed out, there are lots of young dmen that would be better overall to trade him for. No player should beconsidered untouchable in the right trade. I do agree that having Benning be the one to trade him carries way too much risk of getting fleeced.
  2. Defense and goaltending are far more important in the playoffs. Which team advancing out of the 1st round or beyond has a #1 dman who can only play offensively ? None, and its not a coincidence. Hughes is already small and gets pushed off pucks like crazy. Building an all offense style and relying on your PP as the main way to win you series gets you the allergic to winning a playoff round Toronto Maple Leafs. Hughes wanting a long term, big money contract right now on his second deal seems very telling about the risk him and his agent see to him being able to cash in later by becoming a much better overall player. 8x8 not that far off the 2nd contracts people here laugh at the leafs for signing. At least Matthews, Marner, and even Nylander can play adequate defensively - and they are forwards not dmen. Sorry, love the kid but he is the poster child for why bridge contracts need to still be a thing.
  3. This. Not suggesting we trade him for garbage if he is traded. But he has not earned an 8x8 contract. Thats getting to elite all around dman territory for a contract. And sorry to say, but Hughes needs to prove he can play defense before they back up the brinks truck imo.
  4. A lateral move for a bigger, better defensive and elite offensive, comparably aged dman is a trade I would never say no to. 8x 8 would be a massive mistake. No #1 dman in the NHL is all offense, no defense.
  5. My opinion of him is that he is one of the best young offensive dmen in the game. His defense is a huge work in progress though. The "reason", as I explained, was to avoid a huge mistake 8x8 contract and to get a better rounded, still one of the best young dmen in return. You make it sound like I am saying trade him for the sake of it. I have never suggested anything close to that though. But if the package you get back is worth it, sorry but bye Quinn.
  6. If Colorado offered Makar straight up I would take that and run.
  7. Lol that comparison makes no sense based on what I said. Other than the circumstances of it being completely different and Hughes being nothing like Neely as a player. Not sure why anyone would think no package of players/picks would be worth Quinn Hughes. Talk about overrating him.
  8. Depends on the return. If only 1% of fans think there is a package that would make sense to trade Hughes then only 1% of fans are realistic and smart.
  9. No way should the Canucks give Hughes a Chabot contract at this point. 8 mil long term for a completely one dimensional player is a bad idea. I would trade him for a true #1 dman or a package of core age young players including an offensive dman before I would lock him up for that much. He has to show he can be more than a pp/offensive specialist first and can grow defensively.
  10. Ya because he is negative value due to his off ice stuff. On icehe is exactly what the Canucks need though.
  11. You do know Toffoli has played alot of left wing for the habs too, right? He has actually been even more dangerous offensively there. Could have easily moved him over to have a true top 6. When Pearson is on your 1st pp unit, you know your top 6 options are limited. There is literally no excusing the Toffoli blunder especially when combined with the Pearson re-sign.
  12. The fact that Hughes apparently wants a deal north of 5 years and EP wants 5 years or less tells me those will not be significant team friendly deals. It sure looks like they are trying to cash in now on Hughes in the event his defensive game does not evolve the way the Canucks need it to. EP looks like he wants a deal that takes him to UFA status or that will mean a huge qualifying offer at the end. Sakic has been great at getting players at very good value. History alone vs Benning suggests Sakic is more likely to get team friendly deals. Like with almost everything to do with Benning, I hope I am wrong.
  13. If they could get Kane for garbage sure. But not for anything of top value. Great player, locker room cancer.
  14. Two things need to happen (imho) for re-signing Edler to be worth it. First, he needs to be on a 1 year deal at 2 mil or so. Second, and more importantly, the coaching staff needs to commit to not overplaying him. I think both are extremely unlikely though. Realistically one of Rathbone or Juolevi will need to be traded to facilitate keeping Edler.
  15. The idea of moving Hughes to the right side merits consideration imo. Its not like his defensive play could get much worse and if a proper right side D cant be found to play with him, maybe a guy like Zadorov, Oleksiak, etc. could be a fit. Of all the D, moving Hughes to the right side probably represents the best chance at success.
  16. Sure, lets bring back one of the worst defensive groups in the league and hope for better results. If a team ever needed change its the Canucks. Zadorov is what 10 years younger? He hits harder and while he isnt a great fighter at least he answers the bell when he lays a big hit. The embarrassment of Edler getting rag dolled by Simmonds and no one on his team sticking up for him is something we hopefully never see again. This team needs an identity. And the passive one they have had for two decades isnt it. I think people need to prepare themselves that when Edler is re-signed it will not likely be for the discount everyone thinks it will be. My guess is minimum 4 million with a nmc. I dont see Benning expecting Edler (or Sutter) to take more than a 25% or so cut at most.
  17. Even when they choke their fans still insist they are better than everyone else. Thats sad.
  18. I was out fishing with my kids (first fish for my two youngest sons ever!) so I missed the game and forgot to pvr. Only question I have is was the dejection on the Vegas players even more magical than it was in my dreams?
  19. Part 1 of the bolded: Good thing you are a leafs fan then if playoffs and cup wins are optional. Part 2 of the bolded: Lucky you. As a leafs fan you get scrub defense all year long rather than just 5 weeks. Happy to help support you in your bitter misery. PS. Winning the cup does make you the better team. Because despite the need for Leafs fans to say different, winning 4 series is hard.
  20. We are lucky to have the Aquilinis as owners in many ways. They spend to the cap. I dont think they care for the players more or less than any other owner does and thats an unprovable claim anyway. They also cheap out on the front office a lot in the Benning era and force decisions on the hockey people, both which unnecessarily hurt results.
