The only reason we got Schmidt for a 3rd though was Vegas was signing Pietrangelo and needed the cap space immediately. OEL should never have been anywhere near getting that kind of return from the Canucks. If that offer had been on the table they would have jumped all over it.

[Rumour] Tkachuk may want out of Calgary

To be serious, I could see a lot of teams being interested. Toronto would be perfect for him. Or Boston. He could get away with all his dirty $&!# as the refs turn a blind eye. -
[Rumour] Tkachuk may want out of Calgary

Is there any player in the league besides Tom Wilson who absolutely screams Vegas Golden Knight more than Matthew Tkachuk? -
And a heck of a contract that adds significantly to his risk that it will end up dead weight sooner rather than later. Too many long term risky cap hits on our D already. If they can trade for OEL with 2.5 to 3 mil retained and shipping back Eriksson then trade Schmidt or Myers for a younger or lower term left comparable player to balance out the term risk overall, OEL would be a good add. I dont see Arizona taking Myers or Schmidt as the whole point for them is escaping the long term cap. Maybe the dollars owed make that easier for them to swallow. But what is the likelihood Arizona is not on anyone's (read EVERYONE'S) ntc list?

Have a look at our 30 year olds. I rightfully dont have a lot of reasons to have faith in the pro scouting ability of this regime.

The only players/contracts that make sense to move in a deal for OEL are Schmidt and Myers. Sending 1 year bad contracts like Eriksson, Roussel, etc. are clear losses for the Canucks as they are trading short term cap problems for a long term one. If Schmidt or Myers are included, our right side D is depleted while making one of Juolevi or Rathbone expendable. It leaves us one nhl level right side D and 4 left side nhl level d. Sign Hamonic, ok. But he is not a long term solution for Hughes which the Canucks would still need to find and be able to pay. And his agent was pretty transparent that he wants to get paid likely with term on his next deal. Fixing the left side D, or making a left side of Hughes, Juolevi, and Rathbone more impactful doesnt come from adding another left hand, left side dman. It comes from getting a top pairing level rhd to play with Hughes and sliding others down the depth chart. One of Schmidt or Myers probably needs to go but to be replaced by a better top pairing option on the right side. Whichever one is left plus a guy like Hamonic fit well with Juolevi and Rathbone. The focus should be core age players that can compete with this group, not more 30+ year olds. That just shortens or, if things go sideways, eliminates a contending window. With so many of the veteran players brought in not working out, its too much risk to keep throwing good money after bad on those types.

Exactly. Which is probably why they want to get rid of the massively overpaid 30 year old one. So they have the cap to build around Chychrun.
-
People need to be patient. No one should want Benning trading for OEL at this point. Long term money should be getting used for core guys to upgrade the top 6 winger, 3C, and RHD positions, not one of the only areas the team actually has cost effective quality at LD. The Canucks kind of suck. They have a bunch of huge holes that need to be filled before they can think about being truly competitive. One of the only areas they really dont have a pressing need to overspend to upgrade is LH, left side D.

We had Rathbone on the PP at the end of the season and he was pretty good there. Oh, and EP probably wants his top pp spot back next year. So which of Petterssen, Horvat, Miller, Boeser, or Hughes should we move off PP1 to accomodate OEL there? I know he would not get a spot over any of them on my team. We need defensemen who can actually play effective, physical, shut down defense. We already have Hughes, Rathbone, and Schmidt that should be able to carry the mail offensively with the right roles. If you dive a bit deeper into OEL's advanced stats, you see that his regression has been mostly on the defensive side of things and 5 on 5 play. Not exactly filling a huge need of ours to have another guy who is ok defensively at that cap hit. Why spend any asset at all for that contract? May as well just sign a guy like Larsson or Savard. Or better yet, fill the D out with short term guys and go for a bigger name next offseason. The last thing the Canucks need is to trade assets for another long term contract for a ~30 y/o dman. We already have those in Myers and Schmidt. The NMC is a bigger problem for whatever team is dumb enough to acquire him though. Arizona already has him willing to waive it. You dont know if Benning would overpay or not. For me, even a late round pick is too much for that contract as it stands. Even if they trade just for Eriksson straight up, we still get the worst of that due to 6 more years of his cap hit. If they retain 3-4 mil and Van can nullify his nmc, maybe he is worth taking a chance on for a moderate asset. Outside of that, he is a boat anchor contract that will wreck any chance this team has of filling their actual top pairing RHD need going forward. Every cap dollar matters now. And we have enough old guys already. Time to let the young guys show what they can do for this year then readjust next summer as needed with the cap and the flexibility to add more cost effective difference makers who dont have a ton of downside risk to them.

Or maybe Chycrun is just a much better, younger dman and Arizona wants to build around him and get rid of an overpaid, declining one? So because Weber is still a good dman at 35 that means OEL for sure will be? And it makes him worth the risk? OEL's market value is negative at his current cap hit and term. If they retain 50% and trade him for basically nothing, there may be a chance his contract doesnt become Eriksson 2.0. Weber was traded for Subban, who had a pretty terrible contract himself. And in case you havent noticed, we already have several guys that can provide offense. We have almost no one that can really play shutdown, physical defense. OEL doesnt fill that need. And he isnt getting 1st pp unit time in Van to pad his numbers either. He is not very effective generating 5 on 5 offense anymore. He is nothing we need. If we want another 30 year old dman paid too much, sign one in free agency without a nmc and dont spend assets to get one.
-
The difference is, Jakob Chychrun says hi regarding who is the Coyotes #1 dman btw. OEL is not even the top LHD on his team now. Not sure what the stat keeper in Arizona is looking at but OEL is not overly physical at all. Certainly doesnt hold a candle to Weber in physicality, crease clearing, battling for pucks, etc.
-
OEL is owed 10.5 mil real dollars each of the next 3 years and 8 mil the year after. Thats 39.5 mil over that 4 years. Almost 10 mil per in cash. Thats why the Coyotes are so anxious to move him.
-
It would be a lateral move at best player wise. And unless there is a way to shave 2 years off OEL's albatross contract, nullify his nmc, and halve the real dollars owed, there is no actual way to make all other things equal.
-
Would the same D be better with the addition of Shaw and reducing the decision making by Baumgartner? I think yes they could. Having said that, is that D good enough at the end of the day? Absolutely not. Improvement is necessary in both personnel and style/structure.
-
Sooner or later you have to see what you have. If Juolevi can take that opportunity and run with it, its actually him gifting the Canucks something, not the other way around.
-
Thats why I said Juolevi or Schmidt on the left side. If the Canucks only do 2 things - let Edler and Hamonic walk and go hard after a younger, physical, defensively elite RHD - while using Hughes, Juolevi, Rathbone, Schmidt, and Myers as the other 5 D, I would be absolutely fine with that setup for a year or two. I would also be ok if they trade Schmidt either as part of the package for that RHD or for a top 3C, re-sign Hamonic to a team friendly deal, and still went after a top pairing RHD whichever way that can happen.
-
I would actually be fine with throwing Juolevi into the deep end a bit. We have to see what he can be and the team will be hard pressed to make significant improvements this year anyway.
-
Maybe for 1 year. But a far better option giving the limitations atm is to move Schmidt to the left, re-sign Hamonic to play with him, and use 9OA/Juolevi to get a true big, physical, two way RHD for Hughes.
-
If Edler at 3 mil is the option,I would much prefer to go for a younger guy who can placehold that defensive, physical LHD spot for a year or two. Edler cannot be our primary shutdown guy again if the team wants to improve. Hamonicat least fills a need adequately.
-
True story. A lot of desperate ones too. Hopefulky Benning is no longer one of them.
-
Hamonic yes. Edler no. More like Oleksiak, Hakaanpa, etc.
-
Not sure how the Coyotes expect to get premier assets back for him while not retaining salary/cap hit or taking back some truly heinous contracts.
-
I think both the Coyotes and OEL will need to be much more flexible this time around.
-
They may have altered their thinking on OEL since last year with some big contracts expiring. Would be thrilled to see him and his huge long term cap hit going to Boston.
-
He is. But that is also because of the style he plays, which is nothing like the style OEL plays.
