  1. On its own its not a bad thing. But it ties the Canucks into a set right side for 3 years that, lets be honest, is sinply not good enough. The right side needs improvement, much like the rest of the team. If we keep signing guys to an extra year or two it inhibits the ability to improve. I would prefer to keep Hamonic at that contract if one or both of Myers and Schmidt are replaced. Not because either are bad players, they arent. The problem with our D is not that it doesnt have good players. Its that none of those good players on the right side fit well with the guy they are building the defense around. We have already wasted a lot of Horvat's prime years with middling linemates. Dont want to see that repeated with Hughes. He needs a partner who can let him be what he is. That isnt Hamonic, Schmidt, or Myers unfortunately. If they were to use Schmidt on the left side and acquire a true top pairing RHD for Hughes, then signing Hamonic for a few years to play with Schmidt or Rathbone would be an acceptable solution. But the right side needs a better top pairing guy than Hamonic if this team wants to actually contend.
  2. OEL is still a good dman. Is he what the Canucks need? Not in a million years at that contract value and term. Its another Loui Eriksson scenario. Lets be fair here. OEL is not a matchup dman. His defensive game has been slipping and was never really elite on the defensive side to begin with. He is not particularly physical or a top shot blocker either. The right price? I wouldnt take that contract on for free let alone pay to take it. Its a terribly risky scenario to take on a guy who has been declining the last two years who has 6 more years at 8.25 million with a full nmc.
  3. good points. Percentage of the cap is the only fair comparable really.
  4. I would like to see the Canucks be aggressive in seeing what trade options might be there ahead of the expansion draft. An extension for Hamonic should already be in the process of being discussed. See what he is thinking. If the sticking point is term at anything but a team friendly cap hit without any trade protection, I think we let him go. The extra year or two on contracts are a big part of the Canucks cap problems, as are even limited ntc. They cant repeat those mistakes. I would be ok with them giving in on either term or dollars but not both. And definitely the trend for ntc/nmc for support players needs to end. Free Agency has a few good options.
  5. As is, no. With Schmidt and Myers there, no way we can settle for 3 years of Hamonic as Hughes partner. He just is not good enough there. If Schmidt is traded, then maybe locking Hamonic in is ok. The key to me is flexibility this season to be able to use cap space next summer for a big push.
  6. I actually think Schmidt-Hamonic could unleash the best in Schmidt like his Vegas days. Sign Adam Larsson to pair with Hughes and play Rathbone-Myers as a pair. Juolevi can be dangled along with the 9OA or other picks/prospects if needed to upgrade a forward position or even two. 3C and top 6 winger.
  7. This outlines a few important points. The Canucks have core players in 2 distinct age groups. Drafting more pieces to add to the core as constructed is rapidly dwindling as an option. I think this season should not be the one they go for it as there is still too much dead cap on the books and wasteful spending this year that doesnt work out as planned could effectively trigger the need for a reset to the rebuild, where guys like Miller and Horvat may need to be traded to get younger guys who can fit with the EP, Hughes, Podkolzin core age guys. Not saying that will happen, but this offseason and next will have a lot of influence over whether or not this core as built can have a contention window as is. In summary, if you can get a 25 or so year old established improvement at forward or RHD with the 9th OA pick, thats an acceptable move for the team at this juncture imo.
  8. I believe both will be signed to fair deals. I would rather lock up EP than Hughes though. It sounds like they are looking at it the other way around. If Hughes gets term, he absolutely should be at a Sergachev/McAvoy type cap hit imo. He has not shown enough on the defensive side for a 7 plus mil deal.
  9. Nah, OEL is still a good dman. Just not at all worth the risk of his contract term, cap hit, and nmc. I don't see him an a huge upgrade to an area we actually need an upgrade. Dvorak I would be ok exploring a trade for. Just not sure he is worth a top 10 pick.
  10. One of the better reasoned thoughts I have seen. I would be pretty ok if this happened.
  11. Do we really need another LHD, especially one with an 8.25 mil cap hit, to kill penalties? He is declining at 5 on 5 and wont be on the top PP in Van. We can have Juolevi or Rathbone do that for a fraction of the cost. And I would say both Hughes and Rathbone should be getting the lions share of the PP time. Your Tampa to Van comparison is really not that flattering to Van.
  12. A replacement for Edler is pretty far down the list of needs. Plus, we already have one who OEL would not be a significant upgrade on, namely Schmidt. Move Schmidt back to the left side and play him with Hamonic. That instantly makes Schmidt more like the player he was in Vegas. Use picks and prospects if needed to move out some cap. Use 9OA and Juolevi as trade chips, along with free agency, to get a top pairing physical RHD to play with Hughes and a 3C (or top 6 winger if the plan is to use EP, Miller, Horvat as centers). Ekman-Larson is declining at 5 on 5. The numbers are not flattering to him. He still produces on the PP but I dont see him anywhere but the 2nd unit in Van so his effectiveness will likely drop there as well. He is not overly physical. He is also not the player he was 4 or 5 years ago. The risk of 6 more years at 8.25 with a nmc is astronomically and needlessly high. Made only worse when the holes it would create are taken into account.
  13. Take another look at our D Left side: Hughes OEL Rathbone Right side: Myers Even if you re-sign Hamonic who else is playing on the right? They wont have any cap to sign anyone good enough to partner with Hughes. OEL is just another Schmidt really but on the left side. Its not a huge upgrade and considering how much production those 2 Coyotes players got on the PP last year, who are they replacing on our top unit to replicate those numbers? This trade makes our D even more unbalanced than it already is. Use 9OA and that cap to get a partner for Hughes. Guaranteed they wont cost assets plus 8.25 mil per season.
  14. I can absolutely tell who here watches Coyotes games and who doesnt.
  15. This is a massive overpayment. OEL has 6 years left btw.
  16. The next 3 years his actual salary is 10.5 mil per year. The year after is 8 mil. Thats 39.5 mil of the 66 mil overall contract cash owed over those 4 years. Thats reason #1 they want to move him now. He dropped over 2 min per game ice time this past season. Thats not a coincidence. His game is starting to decline. Arizona knows they dont need him at his salary and cap hit. Even last offseason, when Benning was chasing him, many articles were written about how his advanced stats were sharply declining and his overall play was regressing. This past season only continued that trend. Trading for 6 years of a guy based not on what he actually is now but on what he did 4 or 5 years ago is a terrible way to build out this team. Add in the fact he doesnt solve the biggest issue on D - namely giving Hughes (you know, the guy they should be building around) a RHD partner who can play a physical, defensive style at a true top pairing level - and this is a bigger waste of money than 1 year of Eriksson.
  17. OEL gave a list of 2 teams he would accept a trade to. Vancouver or Boston. Unless he has opened that up to the whole league, why would either of those teams give up anything remotely close to the on ice value of the player? Especially when his value is significantly downgraded by his contract terms and cap hit? If Arizona wants to cap dump him, so be it. No way should Benning pay any assets of premier value for him. With 3 mil retention for the whole contract and an agreement to nullify the nmc portion, maybe he is worth an asset or two.
  18. The problem with expecting your star players to sign for less to maintain an internal cap to build around them is when you simultaneously overpay by 500k to 1 mil on average for almost every adequate support player contract you sign. A good agent (and EP and QH have the best) would shred that tactic in 2 seconds. Hughes will get at least 6.5 per just because no chance he isnt expecting to be the highest paid dman on this team.
  19. He is regressing both statistically and simply with the eye test. Good dman still but not what he used to be and his contract is top 5 worst in the NHL imo. Mostly due to the crazy term left on it with a nmc. If you are paying 8.25 mil for 6 years for a D, he should be approaching or in his prime and still improving as a player. He may not fit with Hughes but if you are throwing that kind of money around without needing to get a partner for Hughes, just sign Dougie Hamilton. OEL would be better than Edler. But 6 seasons is a huge bet to make on him being your #1.
  20. Camt believe people want to trade our 9th OA pick and 1 year left of Eriksson for a 30 year old starting to decline left handed D with 6 years at 8.25 mil left with a full nmc. I mean l, how manty times do we need to see this movie to know the ending sucks?
  21. He is not anywhere near what we need for 6 more years with a nmc. The team needs a RHD to play with Hughes. OEL is going to be the next Loui Eriksson if Benning is stupid enough to trade for him, mark my words. Financial considerations are not the only reason they are desperate to trade him. He is starting to regress already. No chance they retain for 6 years.
  22. Considering our luck with long term deals for 30 plus players, thats a big risk to take. And no way does Arizona retain any of his cap for a full 6 years. At 8.25 mil I would rather sign a top RHD next summer and go with Juolevi and Rathbone on the left. Sutter and Ballard immediately come to mind as guys who missed few games until coming to Van.
  23. Eriksson has 1 year at 6 mil left then that is free cap. OEL has 6 years at 8.25 mil left. With a full nmc. No chance Arizona retains 2 mil (or any amount) for 6 years.
  24. OEL has 6 more years at 8.25 mil cap hit with a full nmc. Hard no. He will be 30 in a few weeks. He is a good dman but we dont need any more left handed D. We need a top RHD.
