  1. And why other teams should at least be considering an offer sheet. Nothing says they have to give him a long deal. They could offer him up to 8.7 mil or so on a 5 year deal. That requires a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and if matched and includes a ton of front end bonus money, certainly would make like miserable for the Canucks shorter term. If it takes him to UFAstatus that increases the back end risk to the Canucks too. I highly doubt any team will offer sheet him or he will sign one if they do. But with how hard it is to get a leg up in the parity league, EP at 8.7 is a bargain cost compared to something like trading for Eichel. If I was a GM I would definitely be considering it tbh.
  2. So which of Hamonic, Schmidt, Myers will be playing with Hughes? One of them has to. I think Hamonic as a 3rd pairing guy with Juolevi or Rathbone would be way better use of him than playing with Hughes. But he is the best of the "serviceable" solutions on the current roster for that role. It doesnt mean he is a preferred option there for more than a year until they can find a top pairing guy for Hughes.
  3. In what world was Hughes a steady dman last year? Offensively great, defensively borderline tire fire. Hughes actually regressed defensively going from Tanev to Hamonic. Long term solution? No thanks.
  4. Exactly. I could actually see Sutter as a decent 4th line C gobbling up defensive minutes to allow a 3 scoring line top 9. With wingers like Motte (when healthy), Highmore, MacEwen, etc I could live with that. But only on a super cheap deal. I think Graovac as a 1 year placeholder is fine there too.
  5. I think 3C is important. It absolutely has to be a guy that can drive the line at both ends imo. Not a guy like Sutter who can shoot but doesnt make his line better.
  6. The team needs an all around top pairing RHD who can play a physical game and complement Hughes. They also need a 3C but have the option of using EP, Miller, and Horvat all at center in which case they badly need an upgrade in skill, particularly playmaking, in at least one of the top 6 winger spots and 3rd line RW spots. At forward, some combination of: Hoglander-EP-Boeser Upgrade-Miller-Podkolzin Pearson-Horvat-Upgrade Or Miller-EP-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Pearson-Upgrade-Upgrade At D, some combination of: Hughes-Upgrade Juolevi-Schmidt Rathbone-Myers Or Hughes-Hamonic Upgrade-Schmidt Juolevi/Rathbone-Myers Seems to be the easiest ways to accomplish this.
  7. I have the opposite feeling. I think that Edler will be back. And I am not totally comfortable that it wont be for too much money. I hope I am wrong though.
  8. This D core is not good enough. Can they be better than they have showed under the tire fire defensive strategy of Green and Baumgartner? I believe they can. But I dont think that is a competitive defense longer term. And Hughes, Schmidt, Myers arent going anywhere. If Edler and Hamonic are both re-signed, where does the improvement come from? Particularly needed at the top end beside Hughes. And where does the cap come from to improve a terrible bottom 6?
  9. I would have zero issue with him too. If one of Myers or Schmidt is traded. That right side aint getting it done especially if any of the 3 are partners with Hughes. If the Canucks arent going to find a truly effective top pairing quality all around D partner - rather than a serviceable one - for Hughes to get the most out of him, they may as well trade him for a more well rounded LHD who can play with the right side guys they have.
  10. Tanev says hi. If the Canucks want to be a contender in a few years, they need to find a better partner for Hughes than Hamonic. He was serviceable there but should not be the solution for 3-4 years at 2nd pairing money.
  11. Really depends on who teams might be willing to give up with expansion coming.
  12. I would be happy using our 1st for a top rhd partner for Hughes. Hughes-Cernak Juolevi-Schmidt Rathbone-Myers I would be just fine with that to see what they can do. Add in a quality 7th guy and thats a good D for next year.
  13. Thats my point. They will think he is the better option. Just like they have the last few years when he is clearly not able to keep up with the game. I would say both Juolevi and Rathbone could become better options in a hurry with the opportunity. But with Edler back one sits or gets traded. And the other gets sheltered by coaches who have shown they will always rely on the vets over young D. No chance they "disrespect him" by not giving him too much money, a nmc, and a top 4 role. He is at best a 2 mil 3rd pairing guy at this point. If he re-signs my bet would be 2 years @ 4 million per with a nmc. Unless its a super cheap contract, hard no.
  14. Thats how I feel. Someone has to go to improve the D. I do think with Shaw on board our D could be a lot better than it has shown under Baumgartner but the main issue is no top RHD to play with Hughes. Having a great young offense only dman to build around is great. But he needs a partner better than Hamonic who can help hide his defensive weaknesses. That guy is not Hamonic, Myers, or Schmidt.
  15. Edler will never be used as a 6/7 guy in Van though. If he is here, he is top 4. And that means our D is still not very good. If they would use him 3rd pairing sure, but they won't.
  16. Not at all. Saying none of those 3 rhd are ideal partners for Hughes, who they obviously need to build the D around. With Schmidt and Myers both having term and high cap hits, giving Hamonic the same essentially locks in a defense that was one of the worst in the NHL and has been for multiple seasons. One of them needs to be replaced with a true top pairing RHD. Locking them all up makes it impossible to change things. Edler I want to let go for 3 reasons. First, because if he is re-signed, one of Rathbone or Juolevi are sitting or getting traded. Second, because if he stays the temptation will be for Green and company to rely on him beyond what he is now capable of effectively handling. And third, because he represents one of the only ways to actually upgrade the D going forward.
  17. Edler coming back almost guarantees Green and company overuse him and it means one of Juolevi or Rathbone are sitting or traded.
  18. I would think that could be a good pairing that gets more out of both. Juolevi has earned a chance at regular minutes now imo. And Schmidt needs to be able to play his game. Rathbone-Myers is another pair I feel could be solid. Rathbone has a small sample size obviously but he looks like he will be able to play a good defensive game. That leaves a huge need for a partner for Hughes. Hamonic is serviceable there but I really think its a waste of Hughes to not have a top all around RHD with him.
  19. I rarely root for Montreal but I like that they never give up no matter what the doubters say.
  20. Number 1 reason I will be rooting against Tampa no matter who they play if they get to the finals. I hate Vegas (to give you an idea how much I would root for Boston and Toronto over them) but at least they are not gaming the system to stack their team. Maybe I am just jealous that Benning hasnt found a way to do that with Erikssons contract the past 3 years.
