  1. If you think of the upfront financial impact though, you can see from Montreal's perspective how they might have thought there was a glimmer of hope. Considering how publicly vocal Benning has been about the financial uncertainty causing delays in contracts and decisions, could another team sense that a massive upfront commitment could pose issues for the Canucks financially? Maybe. Would it work? Highly doubtful they would not match. But it might cause some financial issues that impact other decisions.
  2. I dont know if they were smiling as much as you suggest. That contract came with a massive amount in bonus money the first year. From what I read, there was no situation where they would not have matched and were ok with the cap hit and term. But they were supremely salty at Aho's agent for forcing their hand with how it was structured.
  3. If those guys are available I am sure they would consider that as well. They wouldnt do it to mess with Vancouvers cap. Its just not a bad consolation prize if the offer sheet is in all likelihood matched.
  4. The guy owns JB, no doubt about it. But then again, thats not Benning exclusive. He owns just about every GM.
  5. If Seattle signed him to an offer sheet, it would likely not be a long term, cap friendly deal. It would probably be structured to take him to UFA status with no more than a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd - or at most 2 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd - as the compensation. That still would put a lot of cap pressure on the Canucks should they match, which they likely would.
  6. Isnt talking about the team, whats possible, etc kind of the whole point of cdc? There is a whole forum dedicated to trade proposals most of which have less chance of becoming reality than an EP offer sheet. And again, Benning murdering Barry might not be a realistic comparable. If you guys dont want to discuss things that are possible, then dont. Why get all bent out of shape when other people do? Life's too short. Nothing I have said is wrong or invalid. And unlike you guys, I have not once assigned any probability that it could or couldnt happen. The CBA suggests it could. So does the circumstances of all the parties involved. Do I think it will? No. Its a small chance. But would rather the Canucks dont take an unnecessary risk to find out.
  7. Give up what? Presenting facts? Maybe you should give up your delusion that because you think you know EP you can say with certainty what he and his agent will consider or wont. No one here will ever know if he did or did not consider signing an offer sheet. Or if one was even presented. Given who his agent is, I highly doubt that option would not have been part of their discussion.
  8. Like I said, its not likely. But it is possible. And more possible than with the statistical certainty you claim. This is a unique year with a Seattle team essentially having a significant amount of cap space available along with the potential to draft a competitive roster first.
  9. Well, lets review. You claim, without any supporting theory at all, that you know for certain EP would 99.9999999999% not sign one. Other than pretending you know him, no other reason given. I gave a bunch of reasons and scenarios both from his perspective and Seattle's perspective why it would make sense to at least consider the option, depending on how contract negotiations are going. Which none of us actually know. Does that mean its for sure going to happen? No. Does that even mean its likely? No. But it also doesnt mean it cant or wont. And it sure as hell isnt comparable to random events like getting struck by lightning or a person not interested in a job suddenly being offered one lol. Thats just a false equivalency.
  10. It would be next years picks iirc, not their picks this year. If they think that will be a low pick they may roll the dice.
  11. I wouldnt say it is anywhere near likely, buy I would not be surprised either. Really depends on what his expectation for icing a competitive team is right off the bat. Adding to the Canucks cap woes if they match is just a bonus really.
  12. Anaheim and LA both have some good prospects. If ownership/management become impatient and decide they want to accelerate the competutiveness, they have the assets and cap to make some big moves. I wouldnt count that out as a possibility yet.
  13. No one can say for sure he will not sign an offer sheet. It being unlikely doesnt mean its a guaranteed zero chance.
  14. Because the liklihood he would consider an offer sheet isnt some random uncontrollable event. Its entirely up to him and his agent. And its an option available to him in the CBA. Presenting false equivalencies doesnt really apply.
  15. I think ANA and LA are both in a decent position to improve quickly depending on which way they decide to go.
  16. No one knows that for sure except him and his agent though. Its business and an option available to him. If his agent hasnt discussed the possibility with him I would be very shocked.
  17. You wouldnt trade a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd right now to any team for EP? I would, especially if its only costing me an extra million or so on his cap hit when I am a team with 100% control over my cap as a new team. Think about the strategic possibilities. Maybe the Canucks want a bridge deal that keeps him an RFA when it expires and/or has a lower cap hit than he wants. Maybe EP and Barry would prefer a deal that takes him to UFA status. He could sign an offer sheet for 8.7 mil to get him to UFA status. Seattle gives up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for a franchise player at a bit of a premium cap hit in years when they have the best control of any team over their cap. If Van matches, sacrifices havr to be made elsewhere on the roster and EP just exponentially increased his bargaining power when his contract expires. Its a unique situation with Seattle that would probably not be available or feasible most years.
  18. Why do people assume a player is being a douchebag by signing an offer sheet? Its in the CBA and is a viable option to them. It doesnt make them a dbag. A team offering them significantly less than they are worth or stalling contract talks could also be seen as the GM being a dbag in that sense, couldnt it? There are all kinds of reasons players might consider an offer sheet or GM's might offer one. It doesnt make either side a dbag, its just business.
  19. Far more have been offered than you think. How many have been accepted is what you are talking about.
