Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread

Which is why my comment was not that it is being dragged out but that there is risk if it is. Aho was happy in Carolina too. He just wanted a fair contract done quickly. -

It has nothing to do with being greedy. I understand there is a business side to hockey too. -

That is eligible to sign an offer sheet. Seattle has lots of incentive to approach EP with an offer sheet. If he signs and they get him, the draft pick cost is more than palatable for a young top center to build around. Plus the added bonus of poaching directly off a division rival. If the Canucks match, they still win in that it means they forced the Canucks to pay a higher cost to keep EP which will affect other areas of their team. There is incentive for EP to sign one too. Likely a better offer and it also gives him closure to his contract in aweek or less rather than dragging it out. -

He was given some chances. I dont think saying 4 of his 5 years have been limitless chances in the top 6 is realistic. -

Benning himself used the term "ran out of time". Its hardly disparaging him to suggest its a possibility. I dont know that he will or wont leave things twisting in the wind. And neither do you. Nor did I say he would or wouldnt. The fact is, its a possibility. And might be because of Benning or EP or both. No one knows yet. There is a lot of risk because its not every year a team has both the cap space and a divisional rival incentive to do their best to cripple another team and give themselves a young star to build around for minimal cost. -

Loui himself has said as much that he doesnt feel he has been treated well. Why not believe the guy who is actually living the situation rather than suggesting you know how he feels about it simply because it could have been worse? -

Why do people think its hating on Benning to suggest a player doesnt have any obligation to walk out on his contract early? -

He wasnt really given huge opportunity over his time in Van. I didnt say he was given none or deserved more based on his play. Ya, its easy to say a guy should forfeit a lot of money because its handcuffing the team. Its not fair to expect any player to do that. In case you dont know, players wanted guaranteed contracts so they would not be dumped the mo ute they didnt perform up to it. Teams agreed because it gave them protection from players signed to sweetheart deals far less than they are worth from demanding more money. Its a bad system but benefits and hurts both sides. Other players being treated worse doesnt mean Eriksson has been treated well. If you look at it from his perspective he probably disagrees with you. -

How do you make a judgment on something that hasnt happened? Understanding the possibility that there could be a delay in a contract being signed that could open up more risk to the situation isnt saying there will be. Too many people do not understand the difference between the two. -

I think Hughes is very elite at passing the puck but would not say he is the best in the entire NHL at this point. The Canucks transition game is kind of mediocre even with Hughes. And thats not Hughes fault or because he isnt good at it, its more the fact the forwards dont give the D good options to move the puck quickly. You cant really teach size and strength. For Hughes to be effective on the defensive side of the puck, he needs to be taught to use his offensive strengths - skating, passing, vision, mobility, etc. - in his defensive game. He also needs a long term partner who is a well rounded player at both ends with that physical edge. Making Hughes into sonething he is not is the fastest way to neuter his offensive ability. If they are building the D around him, the defensive play of the team needs to support him, not put a spotlight on his weaknesses. I love the kid and think down the road he can be a top offensive dman while at least being decent defensively. But that will be made much easier with proper coaching and the support of the right partner and defensive system. -

So you suggest that every individual aspect of offensive play is a different category but dont apply that to the defensive side of the equation? You will have to explain to me how Hughes is better than most at the following. Is he physical? Can he clear the crease? Does he outmuscle players along the boards in puck battles? Does he use his strength to gain body position and box out players in front of the net? Does he recover effectively when he takes offensive risks? Is he positionally a good dman? Can he take hits to make plays to get pucks out? The answer to all of those is No. -

So its an opinion not a fact that contracts in the NHL are guaranteed? Hmm, you learn something new every day. -

I totally understand. I thankfully cant imagine the stress that comes with almost losing a child. I am very relieved to hear that you didnt and that despite it bending you, it didnt break you. All Canucks related disagreement and frustration aside, that itself is something you should be very proud of. -

At the offensive end, Hughes is a #1 quality guy for sure. Unfortunately his defensive game is below average to terrible at this point and playing a lot of minutes certainly hasnt helped the team on the defensive end. A lot of his offense comes directly from taking risks that impact his defensive play. There are a lot of better overall dmen than Hughes out there. He is only good at one end of the ice. Not as good offensivdly but not as bad defensively either. -

I am sorry to hear you have had some personal issues. My intent is not to make your life worse although I am not sure how stating a fact does that. Having said that, you do have the ability yourself to block anyone whose posts you dont want to see so that your enjoyment of cdc is not impacted. Its not anyone else's responsibility to not post their opinions because soneone else doesn't like them. I encourage you to block me. Its the best solution for you. I hope things improve for you in your personal life and your cdc life. -

That was my point. Its not a hate thing, its just a fact. Saying any player owes it to management to terminate a contract early just doesnt line up with the facts of contracts in the NHL. And it has nothing to do with a players integrity. There are all kinds of factors involved. Do you think the NHLPA and agents want to start setting the precedent that their players will voluntarily assume all the risk if a contract is a bad one? Not in a million years. They would not have fought so hard for guaranteed contracts in the first place. -

Just asking how stating Benning signed a guaranteed contract is somehow hating on him. If my comments irritate you this much, you might want to take your own advice. -

Whatever people think of Eriksson, he can still play at the NHL level, just not at the level his contract should demand. In reality, Eriksson has not been treated all that well the last few years. Deserved? For sure I would say so. But I dont think any player would be happy about how he has been treated during his time in Vancouver. He has never really been given all that much opportunity. And that is for sure on him not earning it as well. -

How would you feel if Benning signed EP to a 5 year, 5 mil per contract and after 2 years of 100 points decided he wanted to terminate his contract to renegotiate for 9 or 10 million? Because thats the flip side of non guaranteed contracts. -

Please explain how stating a fact, with absolutely no vitriol whatsoever, is "attacking" Benning or being a hater. Honestly, what a bunch of &^@#ing whiny bitches. You should read up on why the nhlpa wanted guaranteed contracts. And why they are absolutely the worst thing in pro sports. -

How am I &^@#ing attacking Benning with that comment? Its just fact. Benning agreed to what has turned out to be a terrible contract. Its still a guaranteed contract though. I have clearly said Eriksson has not lived up to his contract and that its fair game to criticize him for that. But there is nothing in the contract that says he is obligated to terminate it to make Benning's life easier. Dont want the risk as a GM, dont sign horrible contracts. -

Very in depth argument against the facts I presented. People just cant accept the fact that guaranteed contracts are just that, guaranteed. I personally think its a major cause of problems with the NHL but that doesnt change that it is what all sides agreed to in the CBA. Until players who overachieve can terminate their contract to demand more money, expecting players who underachieve to terminate to lose out on money isnt really reasonable. Teams have other remedies to use like burying a player like Eriksson. Not allowing the full cap hit to be wiped out by putting them in the AHL was supposed to encourage GM's not to be reactive idiots on Jul 1. It clearly hasnt had the intended effect. -

And maybe he will, who knows? The point is he has a contract that Benning agreed to. Attacking his integrity for wanting the team to honor a guaranteed contract they signed is not really fair.
