[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
wallstreetamigo replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Cant afford him until next summer at least. No chance Buffalo takes garbage contracts back for him and little chance JB will be able to move any dead cap. -

I wouldnt bet on either signing as cheap as we would need them to. Plus both will want nmcwhich is a huge hard no to me. -
[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast

Would be better to sign only 1 year placeholders this offseason, trade them at the deadline, and use those assets and cap space to acquire and sign the right guys to really revamp both F and D next summer. Maybe you get Reinhart on a good deal as a UFA. -

How do you afford a top 3rd line center if adding Reinhart though? -

I think EP is the guy you try to get at s decent long term cap hit. Bridge for Hughes. He is an offensive/pp specialist at this point. -

Reinhart makes sense if they can ship out Pearson. Which aint happening unfortunately. -

Paying Pearson 3.25 mil for 3 years pretty much demands he play with Horvat. Take a look at his numbers with and without Horvat. For all the BS we get told how Horvat needs Pearson, the numbers tell us the opposite is actually true. Pearson is brutal without Horvat. And having both Pearson and Reinhart in the top 6 means Hoglander and Podkolzin are strictly bottom 6 for their ELC contracts which defeats the purpose and stunts their ability to contribute. -

He is not really a great skater and is pretty terrible as a C. As a top 6 RW with Horvat he would be decent, but not at his soon to be cap hit. Re-signing Pearson took up a lot of the cap they would have had to upgrade the top 6 with Reinhart unfortunately. Pearson without Horvat has very underwhelming numbers. And no way Podz and Hoglander should be strictly bottom 6 guys for 3 more years waiting that contract out. Should have used Pearson as part of a package for Reinhart or another top 6 guy. -

Exactly how I feel. No way should they be locking Hughes up to a long term, big dollar contract at this point. The fact he is looking to cash in more on Hughes than EP right now tells you which he thinks is more likely to not earnabig raise on their next deal. -

I dont really want to pay a big cost for Reinhart or sign Nuge tbh. Neither is really the player we need. -

Have to think about it from Buffalo's perspe tive too, not just what makes sense for the Canucks. They are going to want a young, core player back for Reinhart most likely. They cant go back into a rebuild taking picks and prospects. Or even worse, taking on garbage contracts for overpaid, underwhelming players. Doesnt help them sell big change to their fan base. 9th OA plus two guys like Eriksson, Beahle, Roussel, etc aint happening. They have enough garbage contracts they will get offers where they dont have to take any back. -
No team hits on all its picks, even early ones. Drafting is not a concerm to me with Benning. I just feel like it was a much stronger group with Brackett there. We will see I guess. I really dont see our prospect pool as teeming in top end quality talent. I mean, most of those guys have already graduated so thats not meant as a negative at all. I dont know if Benning has the time to draft much more to insert into the core. He will need to be much more strategic about signings and trades to surround this core group. To me personally, I would prefer using this offseason for short 1 year placeholders, another draft piece at 9, and sell expiring contracts for picks/prospects at the deadline to then use along with cap space to effectively surround this core next offseason. Going all in right now feels like it will backfire. Maybe a few pre expansion trades for undervalued guys but the ufa crop is pretty underwhelming to me.

You do realize that Toffoli is a really good two way forward, right? He is easily as good as Pearson. And a better offensive player. Toffoli spent time on all 3 of Montreals lines this year and gave them that elusive 3 scoring line group that Benning now says is critical. If you like Pearson on a 3rd line at 3.25 mil with a ntc, stepping up to Toffoli at 4.25 without one is pretty reasonable. Saying Toffoli wasnt a bum at 28 but will be at 30 after he just had a great season and is doing great in the playoffs is disingenuous at best. Benning signed Pearson who 2 of the last 3 years actually was kind of a bum. So that argument doesnt square up.

Defensive trends in the league, and the Canucks plan
wallstreetamigo replied to D.B Cooper's topic in Canucks Talk
The Canucks are in a good position next summer to build a team that can play together for several years. The decisions this summer and next are critical. They cannot afford bad pro scouting and long term anchor contracts being handed out. I would be happy to see them sign some 1 year placeholders this year, trade them at the deadline to accumulate more picks and prospects if they arent a clear top cup contender (not just a bubble playoff team even) at the deadline, and use those assets and cap space to trade for and sign some key players next summer. Set the team up for a 3,4,5 year run of playing together. The UFA crop next year, particularly on D, is much more enticing. -
[proposal] Trade Dipietro and the 9th overall.
wallstreetamigo replied to SilentSam's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It would cost a lot to move to move up to the top 2. Probably not the draft to be doing it though. Unless you are certain the guy you are getting is better than the guy you would have got at 9 plus all the assets you had to trade. I just dont see anyone that is that much of a sure star in this draft. -
Its not that I miss Toffoli. He is already gone. Its that people feel the need to dismiss the accomplishments of other players the minute they arent Canucks because they think it makes the Canucks players better by comparison. It doesnt. Toffoli would have helped this team have 3 lines that could provide offense and play responsible defensively, just like he did for Montreal. If you think his age means he will fall of a cliff and Benning made a great choice letting him emwalk, then why was it a good idea for Benning to trade for the bum in the first place? I havent looked but am willing to bet you are one of the people who think the Pearson signing was great. Guess what? He is half the player, regressed badly, and wont be a guy we would miss next year either. But we have him for 3 more. At least Toffoli's career offensive year didnt include 20% of his points coming with an empty net. Before you say Bo needs Pearson, you should look at the numbers when they play together and apart. It clearly shows its Pearson who needs Horvat to produce, not the other way around.

Read what I was responding to. If Toffoli only had a strong season because he played against weak competition, why did the Canucks players not have career years? They played against the same competetion. The covid thing is such a garbage excuse. If they had got covid the first day of the season you could use it as an excuse for how they played the whole season. The fact is, the team played terribly long before they got covid. And dismissing the season Toffoli had is just people needing to circle the wagons around Bennings horroble decisions. Give the guy credit for what he did rather than slag him to stupidly pretend letting him go was thd smart move. Thats what irritates me. Like I have said, probably the stupidest assessment Benning has made with this team is thinking they were one Toffoli away from winning a cup. That trade is one actual contenders make.

I dont think the Florida situation can really be used as a reflection on Gallant as a coach. He was doing reasonably well when he was fired. It was mostly due to a bizarre power trip Keenan-like situation centered around Tom Rowe trying to consolidate power around himself. Gallant is a guy that has his own strong opinion on how his teams need to play. Clearly Rowe did not agree with that approach. Considering how quickly Rowe flamed out at the top of that organization and was garbage as coach, I think almost everyone agrees firing Gallant was not only handled brutally, but that it was a clear mistake. Vegas to me just felt like a new GM being impatient and wanting to bring in his own guy. Vegas was struggling a bit at the time so it doesnt seem like it was completely bizarre that Gallant would get the axe, but given the overall job he had done there, it was surprising they pulled the plug. I think they bought into the DeBoer hype too tbh and when he became available wanted to get him. It seems like Gallant's issue is more with management rather than with the team, players tuning him out, or even actual results. Pretty much everyone says he is a great coach to play for. He seems to rankle management pretty quickly though. Should be interesting with Dolan lol
-
Like with players on other teams, many here feel that slagging on Gallant somehow makes [insert Canucks player/coach here] better by comparison. Its a very flawed approach. Gallant is a good coach, understands his roster very well, and builds a system around the talent he has rather than trying to force a system on the players. Huge win for NYR getting him. He will improve that team significantly imo.

At what point do the bruins blow it up?
wallstreetamigo replied to UKNuck96's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Ironically, since they dumped Chiarelli and lost Benning, they have been much better managed. One of the few teams who has actually been able to retool effectively. -
He probably will regress from being on pace for 50 goals. But how many Canucks players even scored 20? Like I said, trading for Toffoli at the deadline only made any sense at all if they kept him. Letting him walk amounts to trading him, plus the assets traded for him, for absolutely nothing that helps the team going forward. Sorry but for a consistent bottom of the league team that is just ridiculous asset management and a huge mistake. Comparing it to a terrible 1 for 1 trade is apples and oranges. Drouin may suck but at least the habs were left with something longer term. Still a completely crappy trade though. But nothing similar to a clear waste of assets to rent a guy when your team is not even close to being good enough to win a cup. Sugar coat it however you want. Toffoli had a monster season and, combined with Benning's own ran out of time comments, made Benning look like an absolute tool.

[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen
wallstreetamigo replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Benning finally made a trade at the deadline and got this then-promising, now barely-polished-turd back then traded him for basically another unpolished turd. Anti-climactic for sure. If this kid does anything of value in the nhl i will be shocked. -
Hoping you are just being sarcastic here. But too many people actually make this argument. To anyone who does, I say: Yes, Jim Benning. One game against a tough team does mean he sucks and you made the right choice letting him go. The rest of the season and playoffs are definitely too small of a sample size vs one game. Even if he did go back to being a 20 goal scorer, how is that actually worse than almost every player on the Canucks since few managed even 20 goals also against the weakest opposition in the league? Why not bring up how much they regressed against that weak competition? Oh ya they played a couple more games through the first month of the season and had covid. That doesnt explain the regression up until they got covid but hey its good enough for Benning supporters I guess. Can we all just take the L on the Toffoli blunder instead of these reality-bending gymnastics designed to absolve Benning of any responsibility for a huge mistake? Toffoli has been great for Montreal and is the furthest thing from being a negative or an issue there.

I will call it now. The Bruins will sell off some older players for good young ones then have an off year just in time to win the Bedard lottery and suddenly rebound. We all know its going to happen, dont we? The only thing that would make it worse is if they bump the Canucks out of the top spot to do it lol.
