[Report] Canucks announce coaching staff updates
wallstreetamigo replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
What he should have said is what teams that scraped into the playoffs who werent actually a deep, talented team (rather than just underachieved in the regular season) have won cups. That is not an accurate description of the Canucks after all. And the answer to that question is 0. Winning the Stanley Cup is very hard. You need more than luck. -
Defensive trends in the league, and the Canucks plan
wallstreetamigo replied to D.B Cooper's topic in Canucks Talk
Actually, he has a lot of bad habits defensively. Some will improve just with time and experience, like making reads when to go and when not to. I have no doubt he will become a better defensive player. Some though, are pretty fundamental and are not as easily fixed. I would take a 50 point guy who can play on the top PP and PK units, can match up against top lines when needed, and can play a more physical style over a small offensive/pp specialist who is below average defensively. Hughes has a long way to go defensively and dont be too surprised if it impacts his offensive stats to some degree. He will be a more valuable player to the team for it though. -

He is a much better defensive player than Hughes, attempts to minimize his defensive play aside. Not sure how anyone would try to debate that. Its not even close. -

When did I beg Jim to trade him? People put hypothetical proposals out for him and I said I would do them. I am not complaining about him. I am realostically pointing out his deficiencies as a player defensively. -

This. If Hughes gets 80 points I shudder to think what happens to his already lackluster defensive game. -

Who said he isnt good? So are the guys we are talking about though. Defensemen who can provide offense are more valuable when they cando so without conpletely sacrificing playing defense. If Hughes can do that, he will be as valuable as a guy like McAvoy. Until he does, he isnt going to be a true #1 dman. -

I would do it in a heartbeat. For exactly the reason you suggest. McAvoy is definitely the kind of dman any team needs to win but we also have Rathbone. He has a great shot and can move the puck well. And tbh he looks to me like he is going to be a more responsible defensive player than we have seen from Hughes. Also, if you look at the guys Shaw has worked with, doesnt McAvoy just scream "right in Shaw's wheelhouse to make even more dominant"? He sure does to me. Same feeling with Dahlin tbh. -

In the offensive end of the ice and on the PP maybe. McAvoy is a much better overall dman than Hughes at this point though. -

I would very likely do that trade too tbh -

Canucks vs the League. Where do we fit?
wallstreetamigo replied to knucklehead91's topic in Canucks Talk
I dont disagree that our roster is lacking. I agree with almost everything you say. In terms of how the team played though, that comes down to a direct comparison to how other teams play. Its relative. There are all kinds of reasons that my take is they played like garbage. It wasnt only roster related. Coaching and the style they play under these coaches offensively vs defensively is like oil and water. Neither ever seems in sync with the other. I am not a fan of the defensive systems especially. It doesnt fit what, on paper at leastwith Hughes, Schmidt, Myers, Juolevi, Hamonic, Rathbone, etc., should be a much better defensive group than it is. I also feel a huge problem defensively is the play of the forwards just as much as the play of the dmen. The overall puck support especially when trying to get pucks out cleanly to transition is severely lacking. I think while the roster has big holes that need to be filled, they have enough to play much better than they did, especially early on. I watch most teams at least to some degree. The Canucks are among the most boring, improperly structured, and disjointed that I have seen the last several years. -
How tall a team is or how much they weigh is not the only determining factor in anything. Big players can be non physical and small players can be. The Canucks wont struggle in the playoffs simply because they arent big enough. They will struggle unless they start actually consistently playing a faster, more physical, and more aggressive style. They need to add more players who can play that way. Whether they are 5'10" or 6'4". And they need the ones they have to play that way nore consistently.

The signs that Hodgson was not a character guy, or at the very least his family would not allow him to be, before he was drafted were at least a possibility according to some people I have talked to. There were some warning signs. Did Hodgson and the Canucks both make things worse? Clearly. But high character people dont suddenly become low character. And if you are placing that level of importance on character, there clearly are several cases where somewhere in the process signs were missed. -

Absolutely true. If you believe the rumors about players the Canucks have shipped out (which I cant say for sure are true or just excuses to justify moving them) then drafting for character and compete has been a bit sketchy for the Canucks overall. But it is often touted as one of the most important things the Canucks consider. So it seems they can improve at identifying those factors. -
I dont think the Canucks are that bad in the size department. Its the fact they dont play that style of game consistently. They could use more size and physical play for sure but I feel like what they need most (and one of the reasons those other teams are where they are in the playoffs) is skill that can play a bit tougher style throughout the lineup. I also think with a different, more aggressive defensive style we will see some of our guys show a lot better than they have in the physicality department.

Want the Canucks to always draft for skill in the early rounds, not reaching for size or truculence or future bottom 6 players. If size and truculence accompanies the skill, thats a home run. But no more Virtanen type picks. Draft hockey IQ and skill first and foremost. Its far tougher to acquire skill than it is anything else. -

Always said i have no issue with the players themselves as long as the contract value is reasonable and the usage and role are right. -

I like Sutter as a 4th line guy leading a 4th unit that can actually play some shutdown hockey. I dont like him at 4+ mil or in arole where he is expected to drive any offensive play. He can shoot but his playmaking ability as a center is sub par. Used in right role at the right contract he is good. -
[Speculation] Is Schmidt on the move?
wallstreetamigo replied to Me_'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
True, some will. But overall I think quick fix solutions have been the result of Aquilini and Benning completely misreading the landscape. More fans have seemed to be more accepting of an actual rebuild the past 5 years than any time I can remember as a Canucks fan. -

I dont think its the fans who cant handle it. I think its Aquilini and Benning. -

Keep telling yourself that. The reality is the Canucks were trending down and were only in the playoffs due to the season ending early and a play in. They did well to beat St Louis, who looked like a typical SC hangover team. Playoff experience is certainly important. But the cost of it for Van was far too high. Benning went for it that season because he knew all his bad contracts were going to make it next to impossible to improve the team this past season. Taking one step forward, two steps back doesnt win teams cups either. Sustainably being able to be competitive year in and year out does. Sometimes you stumble along the way but relying on make the playoffs and anything can happen has not won very many teams, if any, cups. Rebuilding, incomplete teams that are not consistently conpetitive should not be trading for rentals. The lack of an actual realistic long term plan is why this team is more often than not a non contender. Reactionary day to day moves are at the heart of almost every mistake Benning has made. -

I am actually ok if they do this throughout the roster this offseason. Cheap 1 year show me contracts then set up well for next offseason.
