Judging by how things played out, Benning doesnt seem to have been too concerned about getting anything back for Tryamkin. I think there are a lot of assumptions being made and most of them are designed with one purpose: to completely absolve Benning of any responsibility for it not working out. From everything I have read so far, the Canucks management mismanaging the cap is the main reason they couldnt get a deal done last year or this year. Players cant just wait indefinitdly to sign a contract. There are a lot of examples of ones who do that find themselves without one or taking far less money and term because everyone's dance card filled up. I dont blame Tryamkin at all for wanting to sign that deal. Closely read what Benning said and what Diamond said about what happened. Benning said he agreed to what Tryamkin wanted. Diamond said the Canucks could only guarantee an offer of much less right now until they moved out some cap. Assuming both sides are being truthful the breakdown doesn't seem to come down to Tryamkin not wanting to play in the NHL, it comes down to him not wanting to wait to sign a contract on the hopes Benning will be able to move cap. Which he has shown 0 ability to do so far. That suggests to me Benning is more responsible for the outcome here.

Depends a lot on who they protect and who I could get from other teams really. No one that the Canucks are set to expose really jumps out at me as a must have for Seattle. They might look to take a prospect or try to pry assets out of Vancouver to take a bad contract. I doubt they take Holtby as there will likely be more attractive goalies available. Cant see them wanting Myers contract even if he was exposed. Same with Pearson. Although both will likely be protected anyway. Virtanen not likely with the other stuff going on. Motte probably not due to the concussion history although he will probably be protected. -
How would he force Benning to trade him right now though? Like I said, Tryamkin waited last year and ended up with a 1 year deal. I dont blame him for wanting security sooner rather than later. Especially when there is no guarantee Benning could move out cap. It gets tiring to read the bashing or blaming toward the player just to justify Benning handcuffing the team cap wise so he cant just sign players already in the system to fair deals without moving cap. Tryamkin would be in Vancouver now if Benning had the space. He said himself they thought Tryamkins demands were reasonable enough to be willing to give it to him. But they couldnt until much later due to the cap situation.

The only problem is Diamond said that Benning could only offer him what he wanted AFTER he moved cap out and that the offer right now was significantly lower. Tryamkin waited for Benning to do so last year and it almost cost him a job in the KHL. Diamond said Tryamkin couldnt wait like that again.

Yes he will be. Book it. If he isnt there is only probably a slim chance Seattle would take him though. -

That isnt directed at you personally btw @Devron44. I personally dont mind discussing differing opinions with you. Sometimes it gets a bit heated but I dont think it gets insulting or unnecessarily rude and I respect that. -

Those guys will be very hard to contain. If they have tge puck in our end as much as Toronto did it will be over early unless whoever is in net stands on their head. -

I am not offended at all. Like I said, I dont really care what people think. But you said nothing that would have offended me. I wasnt talking about hating players on other teams. I was talking about hating players on our team or those recently traded or not signed simply as a way to justify support of Benning. To me that is no different than people hating Benning simply because he is Benning. Its irrational in both cases. As for insulting other posters because you disagree with their opinion, that to me doesnt add to the conversation. It doesnt prove you are right by saying someone else is stupid. It just proves you cant defend your opinion on its merits. That was my point. -

Both criticism and praise (in any environment) hold much more meaning when someone has the ability to do both. As someone who frequently criticizes Benning (but who also praises him when he makes good moves) I see some of the extreme Benning supporters as equally obnoxious, annoying, and tiring as you see Benning haters that have no ability to balance their arguments. If you think its ok for someone to hate on a player or another poster on cdc because they are frustrated that someone else doesnt love Benning, then it stands to reason that its ok for those same people to hate on Benning or his supporters because they are frustrated that someone else doesnt hate him. In both cases that is wrong, in case you plan to misunderstand my point there. I dont personally hate Benning. He seems like a nice enough guy. I just dont feel like he is a very good GM. I have a lot of reasons I believe that and I try to present my opinions on here because thats what the place is for. At the same time, I dont expect anyone to agree. Its simply my opinion based on my own knowledge, experience, information, and analysis of things. I dont need to be seen as right. No one on here is that important to me to be quite frank. -

Not nearly enough quality physical play from the Canucks lately. To be fair, hitting takes a lot of energy so I understand a drop off there. But its not helping them to do a drive by instead of taking a guy out. -

A lot of Benning supporters on here do actually invade every thread with a negative comment about him and crow about how perfect he is. Lets at least be fair that it happens a lot on both sides. -

To be fair, yes Benning supporters at the extreme do the exact same thing as Benning haters. They do go over the top as well. I have seen a lot of vitriol toward players that has nothing to do with their play but is just to supposedly validate a Benning decision. One told me the other day he hates on Gaudette because people hate on Benning. How is that different than someone saying they hate Benning? Operating from the extremes is always unrealistic no matter which side of the argument does it. Appollo is a good example. People can look at the same situation and come to a different conclusion. And that should be ok. We are all entitled to our opinion. Accepting other people's opinion without calling them names or questioning their intelligence or reasoning, or personally insulting them is in too short supply nowadays. When I evaluate Benning on the whole picture, I give him a 2 out of 10. You probably give him an 8. Its all in our perception. Its all subjective really. Respecting others right to have differing opinions even when you disagree is hard. But to me people who dont - whichever side they are on - are not to be taken seriously. -
Its been talked about ever since they bought the team. Its kind of a rock and a hard place for Benning. Either the owners interfere and force him to make moves he doesnt want to (which makes him a glorified yes man) or the owners dont interfere and all the bad moves are solely on him. He really cant win.

I think Benning gets a bit too much credit for his drafting. It has been good under his watch but not godly. It just looks godly next to Gillis, Nonis, etc.

This could be an interesting game. Canucks need to be a lot better at both ends of the ice. Offensively they need to find a way to transition from their own end. Outlet passing has been brutal. And they need to figure out a way to carry the puck in more rather than dump and give it back. The Oilers will feast on that with their speed. Defensively they need to be more aggressive. Good offensive players make them look foolish when they just stand stationary. -
Its like a cult with Benning supporters. Cant trust the media, its a personal attack against Benning if you question his moves or his competence. Why is the go to that its somehow a personal vendetta against Benning if anyone thinks he has screwed up? Its not personal at all. People just look at his body of work and feel he sucks at his job. It wouldnt matter to me who he was. If the next guy comes in and sucks at his job i will complain about him too. Your opinion is that players like Gaudette and Tryamkin, or their value in trades, is not important. Other people think its very important. What makes you right and them wrong? You cannot admit a single thing you think Benning has done wrong but chastise people for not seeing the things he did right? How does that square your argument with people like me who have posted many times about what I think he has done right or has been good at but also point out that imo on the whole there are lots of things he has screwed up and lots of things he sucks at? Am I only right when I say he did something right? Why is my judgment then correct but if I criticize him my judgment is suddenly faulty? The only time that becomes a possibility is when someone responding to me has no ability to be objective.

You have clearly never been to another team's forum. ALL teams fans do it. All GM's make bad trades, signings, etc. But most at the very least balance the bad with the good. The difference with Bergevin is he has a very clear idea of what he wants his team to be and has also made some great trades. Trading Sergachev was a bad trade but at the time he at least got back a good player that he clearly thought would do more than he has. The Canucks under Benning are a mish mash with no discernable idea of what he wants the identity of the team to be and Benning has very few trade wins on his record. Toffoli, net negative because he let him walk. Tryamkin gone for nothing. Gaudette traded for a 4th liner at best. McCann for nothing substantial. Forsling for nothing. All those 2nd and 3rd round picks that could have added to the prospect pool gone for nothing. Benning is one of the worst GM's I have ever seen for evaluating pro players. Thats the problem with Hughes. Who are they going to partner him with to turn him into a #1 guy? They dont have that type of dman and dont have the cap to sign a true top pairing guy that can effectively play with him. Hamonic isnt good enough to carry Hughes defensively. You said he isn't a true #1 which was the point I was making. Hopefully he can get there.
-
Letting go of those players isnt the problem. Letting go of them and having very little to nothing to show for it on your roster is. Until guys like Podz, Lind, etc. actually show at the NHL level they can be core players, its unfair to automatically proclaim they 100% will be. Maybe they will be the next guys you lump in as not important as an asset to the team. People can and did want Toffoli signed and not Markstrom. Like me. Sorry to be the one to break it to you but Quinn Hughes is not a true #1 dman yet. Offensively yes, defensively no way in hell. True #1 dmen need to be able to play well on both sides of the puck. And Hughes is terrible defensively at this point.
-
I wouldnt say Green is terrible at it. He does ok with top end players. He just doesnt do well with everyone else. Gaudette was always tracking to be a winger at the NHL level. To give up on him because he didnt turn out to be a defensive 3C is just faulty player development, usage, and analysis of the players skill set. Both Benning and Green are average to poor at their jobs.
-
They waited Tryamkin out last year too. And Toffoli. And Tanev. Its just another example of the fans vilifying the player in order to shield Benning from deserved criticism for his role in messing things up. Same with Gaudette. Same with Toffoli. Etc etc etc. Benning should stop personally scouting amateurs and actually do his job.
