  1. It sounds like Benning said they could offer him xxxx dollars guaranteed right now and could not give him what he asked for until they moved out cap. It makes sense considering Bennings sleight of hand type statement about it. He can say they would be willing to give him what he asked for but omit that they couldnt unless he waited for them to move cap out.
  2. It sounds like this Tryamkin thing is turning into another big drama. Benning says they were willing to pay him what he asked, Diamond says they could only offer much less that they could guarantee right now until they moved cap out and that Tryamkin didnt want to wait in case Benning couldn't. Its hard not to believe Diamond because by all accounts its the same thing that happened last summer. I think its aclear indication that Edler is going to be re-signed as it doesnt sound like Benning was counting on any of that 6 mil being available.
  3. I would cheer for any Canadian team other than the Leafs. Even Edmonton.
  4. Honestly, I would be happy to see Colorado ot Vegas win a cup. Maybe the Isles for the giant FU to leafs pajama boy. Hard no to Boston, Toronto, and any other American team.
  5. The ones he hasnt given up on for sure. But drafting is not the only factor. The team needs a GM who can manage the cap effectively and bring in the right secondary players to fit around the core Thats not Benning based on his history.
  6. Its not likely he would accept a demotion. Either he gets moved to the Presidents role (please god no) or he gets fired. There is no reason to believe another GM could not come in and be good at drafting and the other areas he needs to be good at too. There is no reason to hang onto Benning just for his drafting. The scouting group is still in place. A new GM will be able to tap into that as well. Its not like Benning by himself has decided on the players to pick.
  7. But many said at the time - and history has certainly showed it to be the case - that a rebuild should have happened then. The Sedins were great players but trying to put a band aid on a broken leg to try to get back to the top was destined to fail and was a terrible decision.
  8. Almost like Gaudette believing he should get a top 6 opportunity was actually supported by the numbers. But ya, he definitely didnt take enough of a step forward so bringing in Highmore was an upgrade. I wonder where Highmore was in that ranking.
  9. I hope not. But never underestimate the NHL clown show officiating and top down, league wide game management.
  10. When did I say differently? You do know that ownership and management can have $&!#ty plans and be wrong too, right? I would argue that Aquilini and Benning are far more day to day reactive than they should be and their opinions are ehat matter like you say. I have no confidence in either to actually have a cohesive plan for the team. Good companies and management do, in fact, pay attention to what their customers want. Hockey teams are no different.
  11. Honestly, any GM worth hiring would already be able to see the glaring holes and mistakes with this roster. Not every GM comes in and spends years evaluating the roster. We are just conditioned to think thats the way they operate because thats what Benning did. A new, more aggressive GM would be able to make significant changes over the next year. The expansion draft is pretty set at this point. Maybe a new GM acquires another player or two worth keeping and exposes Pearson and Myers (who will not be selected anyway). But as it stands anyone worth protecting is already protected. The draft is going to be a lot more of a crapshoot than most years. I have no concern a new GMwould not be able to pick a good player. Free agency is the biggest reason to fire Benning and give someone else the reigns. I have zero confidence in Bennings ability to sign useful free agents. He signs them for too much money, too much term, and gives them trade protection. Literally any GM would probably be better at signings and cap management. Patient with a new GM? Sure,if they actually communicate a plan and have a proper vision. Patient with Benning? Absolutely not. He is more likely to compound his mistakes than stick to a plan.
  12. Both. Their confidence was shattered. And that includes Gillis and ownerships condidence in the type of team they were committed to buildinh.
  13. But the league really could use the bounce they will get from a Leafs cup win this year. I am willing to bet you will see the officiating tilted alot in their favor in the playoffs. We are already getting a preview of it the last few games against Van. Letting them get away with a ton and calling the other team for even less serious stuff. You will see a lot of pp time for the Leafs in the playoffs imo.
  14. I disagree with "remnants of a championship team". It was more like remnants of a team that was broken emotionally by the Bruins, Kings, and Sharks and was never going to get back to the top.
  15. To sign even more bad contracts for 3 or 4 years? No thanks. Benning was left a dumpster fire by Gillis. Lets give someone new a clean slate and significant cap space to work with. Benning and Weisbrod need to go.
  16. As a 4th liner in limited minutes? Sure why not. As a 3rd liner getting looks in the top 6? No thanks.
  17. With cap space coming, now is agood time to make a change at GM and coach. Let the next group.not be handcuffed by more Benning moves.
  18. No one said the job is easy. But that doesnt mean everyone who happens to have the job is good at it either. I have seen a lot of "ideas" from fans on here for many years. Some are laughable garbage in hindsight (even some of mine) but some actually hold up really well compared to the current state of our team. Dismissing fans opinions because they arent the GM of a team is a pretty common theme to your posts. Fans are the ones who pay the bills. So paying attention to the kind of team your fans are willing to pay to see is an important consideration. I would not personally pay 1 dollar to watch the team live this season or for several years in Bennings tenure. I am still a fan and watch them on tv and talk about them on here. But they are not a fun team to watch at all as constructed and with this coaching staff and its style of play. Or the previous one for that matter.
  19. Despite what people say, that comes down to coaching. Having a roster full of players who cant seemto handle the basics is a big problem too. But the coaches are trying to fit the players to their system rather than building the system around the strengths of the players.
  20. On paper our defense is much better than what the actual on ice results suggest. The passive type defense system we play is just a time bomb waiting to happen, especially when the forwards by and large seem to blow their coverage a lot especially when the puck goes down low. Teams are starting to realize that if they can get one of our defense to go into a corner, there will more often than not someone wide open because the forwards start cheating up toward our blue line for a breakout. The entire symmetry of the offensive style Green wants to play and the defensive style is completely off. It relies on stretch passes our d cant seem to consistently make and our forwards cant consistently be in the right position to take. Our defensive problems are not just with the defense. And offensively not breaking out with a crisp first pass to a player at speed is why they resort so often to dump and give away zone entry.
  21. I thought he was ok. I think people see him as a different and complimentary type dman to what we already have and what we have in our system.
  22. I like Highmore for what he is. I just dont think he is a 16 minute, get looks in the top 6 type of player. He is simply another symptom of what is wrong with this team's construction, like Vesey, Boyd, Hawryluk, Roussel, etc. A few of those types are needed. Not that many though. The bottom 6 still needs some ability to play in the offensive zone once in awhile. The combination of dump and give up the puck offensive strategy (because our "chase" part of that equation and ability to win pucks back is garbage) combined with a five man stationary box defense is a terrible combination.
  23. I dont wish for either of them to fail either. I see people gushing over Highmore though and it makes me laugh. He has not added anything this team didnt already have too much of, namely bottom 6 guys who cant chip in offensively and get hemmed in their zone repeatedly. We need guys who can score, not guys who can eat minutes doing nothing that helps the team win.
